It is true that they may call themselves a punk band, but their sound is much closer to metal.
Their worldview is punkish but their guitar licks are more metally. Like the first song on The Shape of Punk to Come where the singer screams "I've got a bone to pick with capitalism...and a few to break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" That is a more punk rock sentiment, but the guitars are then strummed in a most macho, bombastic, metally fashion. The Refused are one of the few metally bands I like. But they are too earnest to be a punk band in my opinion.
This is coming from a guy who vastly prefers punk to metal, generally speaking. And by punk I mean like the Dead Kennedys, The Circle Jerks, the Dead Boys, The Queers etc. not shit like Good Charlotte.
Good Charlotte is to punk what Bon Jovi is to metal.
And has anyone ever heard that "He was a skater boy....She said see-you later boy" song? Oh my god. That is the most trite, sacharin shit I've ever heard.
