    Hi VF-meisters.
    1. Are some characters particularly handicapped by lag compared to others? (I guess I'm looking for excuses as to why my Taka sucks so bad)

    2. IIRC, I've heard of people 'Lag Switching' to cheat online. Is there such a thing? If so, I'm not interested in how they do it I just want to know how you can tell when they do.

    3. Does one laggy member in a room drag it down and make it laggy for everyone else? I don't want to be 'that' guy who bombs a room and makes everyone leave.

    4. Does lag have the same effect on players in a match? I'm guessing it does, but I've played games where I thought the connection was good only to be told afterwards that the match was laggy. Hmmm.

    1. Yes, though wouldn't say Taka is one of them. It does however also go for play styles. Some ways of playing just work less well in laggy conditions.

    2. Yes they are real. No real way to tell except for oddly convenient lag spikes that seem to always benefit your opponent. Their conenction could just be rubbish, or could be torrenting or you could just be unlucky. Same result.

    3. In my experience, it can do, though according to Sega it shouldn't. What we do know is that player matches tend to have a better connection that room matches with lots of people in the room.
    4. No, lag is ASYMMETRIC. It's important to remember that just because it felt ok to you, it doesn't mean it wasn't like playing underwater for the opponent. People also have differing opinions of "good". If you've just been playing offline, the smallest amount of lag may make the game feel horrible.

And THIS is exactly the desired result of using lagswitch.

I've thought that lag is symetric in technical means. It's p2p, so if one have lag, other will have it too?

Btw. Modelah, It's always laggy (for me?) when I am playing against you.

I was playing against Elite and had a short discussion about it on shoutbox. On my end, the game did not had any pause, but on his end he was seeing pauses.

Also to note: lag will definitely affect people differently. For some people who have really great reflexes it might not be a big of a factor. But for people that do not have great reflexes...what would normally be consider good enough reflexes for offline matches may not be good enough for online matches.

What about those of us who's reflexes aren't even good enough for offline?

Then their reflexes are definitely not good enough for online :p

Edit: When I said - reflexes, I mean one's ability to react to something that is happening in the game.

When you play online it's cold hard prediction. Dunno about you guys but I find it a real struggle to react to a lot of situations online.

Lag only ever happens to me. It happens every time I lose, and is the sole reason I get beat. Everyone else just makes it up.

Great. Now I can't blame lag for sucking, it's all on me -GAH!
On playstyles though, how do you guys adjust your game to compensate for lag?
    BTW, nice post Marly.

Hmmm, on my end, IIRC the game didn't seem too laggy... but as Marly said, my definition of a good connection may be different. Next time I see you online, can we test it and compare notes? I know online ranked isn't the place for experiments but I don't think I've beaten you yet so you've got nothing to lose if you wouldn't mind...

I consider my reflexes to be top tier, but I actually find it to make lag insufferable, as so much of my game is based on fast, hitcheck-able play. I make decisions as often as possible based on what I can see and react to, like how my opponent is guarding, but online promotes yomi and prediction over reactions. For me, it becomes a whole new game, but unfortunately not one that I care to play.
That's what I think about lag.

I don't think anyone playing the game online says lag is awesome! :p If your goal is to play the game to win at all cost, abuse the lag and play the game differently from online versus offline. Same game with lag being a variable. If the lag is a major issue that is bothering you, politely decline to play the person that you have a bad connection.

There is a lot of benefit of playing online. I use online to play against friends that live long distance from me (a plus for online). I play online to promote Virtua Fighter and grow the community (another plus about online).

I wouldn't be so salty if I had FIOS or similar, but a good offline scene is better than online anyway any day. We all make due.

    No, unfortunately no.
What you are talking about is latency AFAIK, which is the some for both duie to P2P.
But lag can be also caused by losses, corruption and jitter and this may be one sided.
Also many lag-switches are designed in such way it will not affect player but only his opponent(s)

Reflexes that is the key with lag. Due to slow reflexes, I play defensively but with Taka I definitely have hit a ceiling because of lag. That little window for one to react becomes very small online. Frustrating!
