Does anyone here play Go? It's another one of my passions lately and I sometimes play on IGS and KGS .

By American standards, I'm supposedly around 20 kyu or so... I guess by Korean or Japanese standards, it would be somewhere around 24-27kyu?

Yeah, not that great, but this is one tough game. Also addicting as hell. I tried learning the game 5 years ago, but didn't really have people to play with locally till recently. Once that happened, I just couldn't stop being into this game.

Anybody else play this wonderful game?

P.S. Don't know how to play, but want to learn? Here are a couple recommended links.
The Interactive Way to Go (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as a starting place)
    Sensei's Library (A good, community-driven reference site)

Also, I recommend playing Go on the Kiseido Go Server (KGS for short). This server makes teaching games possible because editing the board online (in real time) is possible. Also, there are groups dedicated to helping beginners get better.

Never played go, but I have played games similar to it. I think now I may start though /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

i gave it shot a few times. it is quite addictive, and 10,000 times better than checkers. i usually only get to play on yahoo, but those twits act like retards if they're losing and love to quit. and sometimes they boot you for no damned reason. don't have a rank though. btw, have you ever read the Go themed manga they publish in Shonen Jump? assuming they have it where you are. it's interesting for avid fans of the game and for newbies like myself.

    Hikaru No Go

Yeah... Yahoo is one of the weirdest places to play Go. It has improved over the years... It's very annoying when people bail out of matches. Fortunately, the dedicated servers at least keep track of all of that. Oddly enough, some Japanese and Korean professionals supposedly randomly play games on Yahoo under aliases. However, for sure, many of them play on The Internet Go Server (IGS). Naturally, unable to compare (I would take 40 stones at least if possible, lol), I just watch their matches now and then. Fun in real time, but the matches go on for hours (usually 3-5, but you can watch many at once). For playing on any level, I highly recommend (again) The Kiseido Go Server.

You're referring to the manga (also an anime), Hikaru no Go.

That is actually the biggest reason there have been more Go players in my area recently (lot of high-school and college anime fanatics). As for the series, it is surprisingly good. I was playing Go semi-regularly before watching the series, but I eventually grew to really like the series after giving it a shot on the recommendations of friends.

For those that want to download anime episodes via Bittorrent, check out Anime Torrents. At this point, I recommend downloading with a P2P client, FTP, mIRC, etc... This series is and was very popular, but almost everyone who likes it has already seen it all (hence, now there's low activity on bittorrent).

Anyways, the manga/anime didn't get me into Go, but it almost certainly would have. It did further stimulate my already growing interest, I have to admit that (as embarassing as that probably sounds).
