Yoshinoya has reappeared on 42 st after an absence of six years. yoshinoya is a chain of 800 bowl / counter eateries in Japan.
For a dozen years back in the late seventies/early eighties it was a dark small wood countered cave of a steamy age long gone. medieval really. think of samurai saturday. /versus/images/icons/grin.gif one block from the endless kung fu movies it was sorely missed, especially in winter.
Today, Yoshinoya it is modeled after the latest Tokyo airport restaurants. The original specialty - the beef bowl is back. a welcome tang of sake and fermented soy flavors the tender beef and translucent onions over rice. a bargain for $3.59. a side of kimchee and sake in a can. Teriyaki chicken bowl is still time warp good...($3.59) with cauliflower, bright carrot coins, cabbage and broccoli bits over steamed white rice. One block from the arcades of Port Authority and BroadwayCity.com 55 West 42nd Streets (Between Seventh and Eighth Avenues)(212) 703-9940

Yoshinoya rocks! Heh, nycat, we're talking about food again.

Another really good Japanese fastfood in the neighborhood is Sapporo's at 49th, between 6th & 7th. Not as food/dollar efficient as Yoshinoya, but they have some really good ramen there.

And speaking of Popeye's, yeah, there's one in Times Sq as well! Just a block west from Sapporo's on Bway. Yeah, their mashed potatoes rocks, and so do their fries. Popeye's owns KFC anyday.

Sapporo's at 49th, between 6th & 7th is unique in NYC. The same mega Corp that bought so much of Rockefeller center area 's (1983)hot property owns building Sap is in and the apartment building next door too. The best soy paste soup ramen in NYC. Terrific dumplings. Nice to sit at counter on cold winter day with stoves blasting and warm sake while reading S/M comic books from Tokyo. Second seat from end (inside) is just under the heat duct...ideal when it is snowing outside. They have good kimchee as well. Pork Katsudon is good. Friendly team spirited cooks and wait staff. cool black t-shirts. /versus/images/icons/grin.gif first intrduced to Luck Seven cigarettes here..sitting at a table w/ date is favorite thing before or aftewr show or movie. XXX famous people like to sit along the wall in the front facing rear. many literati and show people from XYZ century t and others frequent at odd hours. ..years ago the Hotel down the block was infamous for its eastern european release artists.[8_][P][8][2][8][2] /versus/images/icons/grin.gif

Hey Almaci. You were right about the beef bowl. /versus/images/icons/crazy.gif /versus/images/icons/confused.gif They may boil the beef now... /versus/images/icons/frown.gif Saturday I went for the combo mowl. Glad i did too. The chicken and veggies were great, but the beef disappoints. Lots of Japanese tourists. Now they are up to 1,000 restaurants. Great chopsticks (they are better than the beef). Next door to BroadwayCity arcade with two VF4 machines. One is in a VF3 tb cabinet. Two Soul Calibur II machines! SCII rocks! Now on to saporas for really good authentic Japanese food . Get to Bar Code for VF4 EVO!
