Lei Fei has the image of a character with lots of confusing stances. It will take a long time to really master him, but getting over the basics is the first step. There are many things to learn, so he's a character for whom you don't want to be easily satiated

    Basic Combat at Close Range
At close range strings from /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif are simple and strong. After /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif it moves into Doku stance, and even if guarded Doku /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif will beat out attacks up to 13 frames (~more like 13 frames and above?). Against opponents who throw out /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif or /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif cannot be interrupted, so mix it up, stay in Doku stance for a reversal etc. Against opponents who stay guard or evade, you can stance cancel and go for a throw. It will automatically become a 0frame throw, so it is quite strong. Options from /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif are quite strong, and with /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif into basic mixups, you can attack reasonably effectively.
Mid attacks to be used at advantage include - /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif which is fast executing and distances on block . /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif giving stomach crumple on counter hit, and is very strong against opponent's high attacks. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif has good execution and favourable frames afterwards, and is strong against elbow or punch sabaki. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/uf.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif giving juggles on normal hit. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif which has dual circular attacks, and can switch to stance with stopping after the first hit. Using these plentiful mids and throws and mixing them up appropriately, you can form an effective offence.
Other useful moves, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif which yields a free Koko /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif on counter hit. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif a high-mid string, giving advantage on the first hit, and even if it is blocked if the opponent attacks you will score a counter hit into stomach crumple with the continuation.

    - After specific throw escapes or after Ura Koko /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif or BT /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif you can take your opponent's side.
    - After this, moves such as Hai /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif on hit will further the side turned state. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif on counter hit will cause a side crumple.

Combat at mid and long range.
When attacking, Hai /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif and mixups from Doku /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif. It is however easy to be avoided, and if you eat your opponents waiting move, it will be painful, so try to maintain space and wait for a whiff to minimise the risk.
At medium range, you want to use /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif with its easy hit-confirmabilty, and the combo starters /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/uf.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif on whiffs. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif's execution is slow, and hit confirming is just about impossible. After moves such as /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif where you are reasonably separated, you can back dash and enter the command, and if you see your opponent do any move you can think of this as hit confirmed.
    - After a failed evade, for a limited amount of time you cannot execute a succesful evade, so if you see a successful evade, go for a fully charged Hai /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif and all they can do to get out of it is atemi (reversal).

    Fighting up against the wall.
Near the wall, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif on normal hit will cause wall stagger, and with the addition of /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif you can hit for up to 40% damage (see the combo list.) Other moves that give wall stagger include Rak /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif and Hai /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif. The latter is guaranteed if Hai /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif hits on counter hit. Even if you are a little separated from the wall, a counter hit Hai /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif will let you move up to the wall in a flash, and with the combo you are looking at greater than half damage and a quick turn around victory.
Depending on the opponent's struggling speed, if you are close to the wall there are instances where /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif will be blocked. Against these opponents, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif is recommended. It is guaranteed, and it will cause a wall splat.
Moves that cause wall splat on normla hit include /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif etc. The latter is half-circular. When Lei Fei has a wall to his stomach side, the opponent cannot evade to escape so aim for it.

    - /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif is disadvantage on normal hit, but if they hit the wall it is advantage, and you can keep attacking. Mix up mids and lows.
    - Because /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif is so strong near the wall, throws come alive. You can use delayed attacks against ETE and throws against people who stand and guard.

    Basic fighting at disadvantage.
When at disadvantage and you predict your opponent's throw, the combo starter /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/uf.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif is useful. Because it has airborne class, it will not clash so you can take damage. It is also useful as a delayed attack where you predict an ETEG.
When you predict a single-limb /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif or elbow, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif will hit. It depends on prediction, but if you predict a ove you can get a head crumple stun, so against characters with lots of /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif and elbow moves it is useful. It also has a role in interrupting strings instead of just blocking them. Akira's /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gifhit_guard/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif or similar, where normally you wouldn't get guaranteed retaliation if you blocked them allows you to steal damage.
When you opponent deals with your sabaki with leg attacks or shoulder attacks, you can switch to ETEG. There are cases where you can evade and get guaranteed retaliation, so don't miss them.

    - Opponents will be wary of sabaki moves after one of your moves is blocked, but they are not so able to see them when it's after one of their moves hits. This is a big bonus for players who use moves to counter sabakis.
    - Like in the photo, when the opponent goes for a damaging non-sabaki'able move, you can beat them by evading. There are many places where they will be left wide open.

What about it? Remember, this is a translation so if it's not in there Hanabi Lei didn't mention it. If you want to talk about other moves there is the main Lei Fei thread. And, Hanabi Lei is limited by the space he has on the pages, just three, as well as having the goal of concentrating on the basics. There are tens of other moves he didn't mention, all of which have some properties, but it's not the function of the black book. I'm sure what he was trying to do here was mention the most functional, important moves. The remainder the player can investigate for themselves.

And there are more pages to come.

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/u.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif is old news really. It's being used back in Evo.

Hanabi is talking about '5'! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

    for anyone who plays Lei,

the specific scenario: both you and the opponent find yourselves momentarily crouch-blocking and are at very close range

my question: what's your next logical move? is it simply to crouch-dash back?

    thanks in advance.
