Capcom to release GTA III in Japan, thoguts, questions, comments, anyone.....

This really is fucking awesome, and shows just how influential the GTA series is going to be. I seriously can't remember the last time that an American game was held in higher standards than that of a Japanese one by nearly all the press and public.

If GTA catches on in Japan, that would just be unbelievable. I know that most Japanese video game players tend to have extreme brand loyalty, and rarely ever branch out for different game series.

Take a look at the sucess of the FF games, of course they always do well, cuz everyone buys the damn things. I don't think that GTA could ever replace FF games in Japan /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif, but even it comes to being half as popular, that would be outstanding for Rockstar (and Capcom!).

lmao, this is exactly what I am talking about when I say that Japan has no damn clue about GTA.

GTA stands for Grand Theft Auto, mainly referring to the third in the series. Here are some links for you people who are not familiar with the series in general:

Oh, yeah - I know what Grand Theft Auto is... not enough to know the acronym. Honestly, when it comes down to it - I hate racing games. The only one I ever got into was Daytona due to two reasons. 1) Getting wasted and ramming my friends at the arcade, and 2) Peer pressure from a friend to buy it so we'd have a two-player game to play when he came to my house and got wasted. True - the Saturn one wasn't 2-player, but we could write down the times and compare.

There's loads of other quality games that just don't sell for shit here: With very few exceptions any first person shooter (Half Life isn't in the Japanese gamers vocab by a stretch), and any other game made by a non-Japnaese company. /versus/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I know there are quite a few western developed games that are good. Hey - Halo was a technical milestone and fun to boot - I don't care what anyone says. Descent3 for the PC is one of my all-time favs, and probably the funnest online game I've ever experienced. But, for the handful of good ones, there's a ton of shit to wade through. True, there's crap in the Japanese market, but it's easier to navigate. More stuff coming out, and a lot more coverage. Even if you don't have internet, just run down to the bookstore and grab the latest of 5-6 game magazines that come out weekly.

If they redub the voices in Japanese, and turn the mafia into Yakuza I'd import it.

Actually, it's not an adventure game either. No one has been able to agree what game class the GTA series bleongs to, so it has its own, "Free Roaming (Adventure)."

GTA is so many generes rolled into one:

    -Action
    -Adventure
    -Racing
    -Crime Simulator
    -Plot Driven and Free Roaming
    -Fighting (yup fighting)
    -Shooter
-and many others, it is the game known for "blurring the line beetween genres."

I've had this argument time and again with my friends and co-workers, and we seem to more or less agree that GTA is simply an RPG. Maybe not in the console RPG sense, but certainly in the vein of traditional PC-esque RPGs like Morrowind. Sure, you can't kill hookers in Morrowind, but in GTA you roam the countryside (city) getting into adventures, and occaisonally embarking on a quest (if you want to). Sure sounds like an RPG to me.

I tend not to gravitate towards traditional RPGs, and as such I really have no interest in GTA. Changing the setting from fantasy to realism doesn't change the basics of game play.

Incidentally, the official (TRST) genre of GTA is "racing," with a sub-genre "combat oriented racing."

The game already has Yakuza in it... and Colombian Cartel, and Chinese Triad, and your various home-grown gangsters. In short, the game has pretty much every crime organization known (except Russians, I think).

Any news on GTA4 and where it's going to take place. Someone told me Vegas but I haven't seen anything that can confirm that. I think they should do a LA, VEGAS mix : crypts, bloods, casinos and strip clubs. What more can you ask for.

GTA has better plot, more terrain (hills anyone?), and was like fifty times more innovative, fresh, and new.

If you have played GTA3, you KNOW exactly what GTA:VC is going to be like. The game (GTA:VC) is just more of the same, been there done that.

It is kind of like the jump from VF2 to VF3. Of course a sequel is going to have more stuff, but is that stuff going to be all that significantly different, not always.

The bottom line is that GTA3 was not supposed to be a great game, or even a good game at all /versus/images/graemlins/tongue.gif. It came out the same year that Metal Gear Solid: 2 (which was rabidly anticipated), and Final Fantasy X (another hot game, first FF on the PS2). The amazing thing was, when the game came out, I didn't see it get a score lower than a 9.0 in ANY publication or website of high status. It got praises of ,"best game EVER," "the only must own game in existence" "where the fuck did this come from?" and even "basically, GTA3 is the best game that will come out this year, it's gonna get GotY award."

All of my friends and co-workers thought MGS2 would get best game, but it got rocked by GTA3. Now take a look at how many GotY awards GTA:VC got.........none..

GTA was projected to only sell shy of 200,000 copies AT BEST. But take a look at what happened. Rockstar thought that GTA was a dying series, and no one really anticipated the game.

There is not one person I know, or one on this board, that was anticipating GTAIII more than MGS2 or FFX, no one cared about GTAIII. It was only when GTAIII got tthese fucking unbelievable reviews that it sold so many copies.

And BTW, GTA1 was ok, but up until GTAIII they sucked. There is no way that GTA would have sold half as many copies if it had gotten bad reviews. The only reason most people bought it was due to the fact that critics praised the shit out of it.

And also, there are many games made that SUCK, but are meant to make alot of money anyways. DOA Volleyball, MK:Deadly Alliance, The Sims Online anyone?

I can't imagine the projected sales of GTA3 being anything less than well above average. I don't have TRSTs going back before the release of GTA3, so I can't tell you how much the previous versions of the series had sold back then, but the original GTA has sold over 700,000 copies while GTA2 has sold over one million (US only btw. Sales in the UK have always been favorable as well); hardly sales figures poor enough to project the third in the series selling only 200k.
