Character Ranking Theory

    In light of Arcadia's recent tier list, I thought it would be nice to get discussion going on rating characters in a way similar to the character ranking list at Tekken Zaibatsu. I want to ask people here before we start ranking characters so important questions. What should be some categories? What should be the scoring system? Is there a better way to structure our list?

    A rough idea for categories can be punishment, throws, tracking, damage, and range. I think that a miscellaneous heading should be at the end, including things like random factor and ease of use.

    Let us be as specific as possible in listing things and describing them. For instance, if I'm doing a punishment chart for Brad, I'll have something like:

    +12

    PK, 30 Dmg, +4
    PP, 20 Dmg, Dck -3; Slp -2

    +14

    6PK, 35 Dmg, Down
    P+K, 18 Dmg, Dck +3; Slp +4
    6P+K, 20 Dmg, Slam

    Etc.

    Then I would go about describing the damage I get from all of his guaranteed launchers. I think I might then conclude by giving Brad's punishment a 5/5 (which is only my current opinion).

    Punishment: 5/5

    So, before we do any sort of rankings, let's discuss how we're going to go about ranking these characters.

    I'd like to add to the list of things to consider: Oki game and circular strength.

    Circular strength would be covered under tracking. Yeah, I guess that wasn't the best name to give it. Okizeme definitely. I was also thinking about maybe having attacks as a general category. Guard breaks, side pressure, etc.

    I support this idea. It's one of the ways I began learning new characters in Tekken.

    I think you reall should incorporate things like:
    * under and over
    * oki
    * yomi (what is it good for if you have damn strong mid if you have no reall way how to force opponent to eat it?)
    * overall safety

    It may be worth to consider to add even things like
    * long range strength
    * mid range strength
    * short range strength
    * jugles (damage, how hard they are, how specific for character/stance they are...)
    * (dis)engage

    Overall, I really like the idea a lot, as it may help people to understand strengths and weakness of characters. On other hand, i will probably not score like 0/5 - 5/5, but 1/19 - 19/19 (the actuall character placement in category in compare to other characters)..?

    I thought by tracking you meant slow moves that have a high chance of tagging an opponent who side stepped and wanted to attack you but didn't wait for the exe animation to finish. Akira's P+K comes to mind or taka's 33P.

    Juggles would be covered under damage. Not sure what "under and over" means. In regards to your range strenghts, I think that having an offense category would cover that. I don't think that it would be a good idea to have too many headings. So, I guess that range as a whole should be covered under offense. Safety might also be covered under offense. Keep away, in my opinion, should be another thing covered under the general idea of offense. I think it makes more sense to do this for Virtua Fighter.

    Maybe circulars and tracking should be considered under the same category label?

    I think the over and under thing refers to crushes. Like Eileen's low crush is 9P, and her high crush is 46P, 2_3P+K, 3P+K. That kinda stuff was my guess.

    Yeah, that would be a good thing to cover under offense. I think before too long we can start with samples to determine how workable these ideas are. Tricky, would you like to compose an offense paragraph or two for Eileen, along with a rating (1-5)? Try your best to think in terms of what the rest of the cast has.

    If not, I might try later for Brad.

    Also please dont forget sabakis and reversals + the guaranteed damage and setups of those.

    I've considered a defense category. Thing is though, if a character lacks reversals and parries and stuff, that's not a bad thing really. So if a character gets a 1/5 for defense and it factored into the final score, that would be terribly misleading.

    Maybe these should be in either offense or under miscellaneous.

    I don't mind writing an eileen offense section, but I'm still fuzzy on the details of how this works. I never could really understand the tekken explanation of character strengths and stuff.

    Why would we do that when that thread was for Vanilla 5 and this thread is for Final Showdown?

    I recall a thread where an attempt was made at defining some metrics in which you could quantify the value of a character's move, and thus, their overall moveset, in order to objectively determine the value of one character in comparison to another.

    But for the life of my I can't seem to find it. Can anyone else who remembers it find it? There might be some useful stuff in there related to this topic.
