In my neverending quest for ways to destroy weekday boredom, I've chanced upon a new massively multiplayer online game which is actually....wait for it....fun!

I've never been a big fan of these games after sampling the tedium of Eve online and Star Wars Galaxies, but this game is different. The basic principle is stupidly simple: create a cheesy superhero with unique powers and appearance, take him online and group up with other superheros to destroy evil in a vast virtual city.

No mining, searching for minerals, fishing, crafting or any of those dull activities in this game, just full-on cheesy superpowered battles with lots of other players.

If you're interested here's the homepage www.cityofheroes.com. You can also download the game by purchasing a serial number over the net.

Cool... I'd like to make a Tanker Mutant fighter, somethin like THE HULK, my favourite hero.
My second choose could be somethin' like THANOS...

Here ya go, cc'd from another forum. It's less complex than it looks believe me:

OK, here's the steps you need to take ( Using my funniest French accent ) "Please listen carefully, I will say this only once".

Step 1, You need a PlayNC account. To get one go to this link...

    https://secure.plaync.com/cgi-bin/plaync_account.pl

Follow the steps there to sign up an account. This is free to do, as you pay per game, NOT per account.

Step 2, Buy the serial key. To get this go to this link...

    https://secure.plaync.com/cgi-bin/plaync_buy.pl

or click on the link "Purchase Game" in your account manage screen.

From there you enter your credit card details, check the City of Heroes radio button and submit. Make sure you ONLY CLICK THE BUY BUTTON ONCE. As this will debit your credit card then and there.

The serial key will be e-mailed to you. So make sure you state an active e-mail address.

Step 3, log the serial key with your account. This is done here...

    https://secure.plaync.com/cgi-bin/plaync_add_game.pl

When you get your key in the e-mail, you enter it on this page with your account details to activate your account.

When this is done your account and login details are ready to go. All you need now is the game client. You can download that here...

    ftp://coh:client@client.coh.com/Coh.zip

It's big. About 750Mb , but with internode ADSL it "shouldn't" take too long to get. Also there is a link on your manage account page which allows you to download it from there.

In all carefully read each web page and enter the details as required. Thus you can get the game NOW and have it up and running as soon as you download the client.

Just check the links and you'll find all the pricing details.

As for leveling up, ect., this game isn't aimed at sunlight hating RPG geeks who'll log hours and hours in their shuttered rooms each day. To that end character advancement is fairly linear once you've chosen your base hero type. The game is totally combat focused.

Great thing about it is you can play for just an hour a night and feel like you're achieving something. Personally it's perfect for me as I only have limited time each evening to play.

I played this, and gave it up after a week.

There's just nothing to do - you go around, kill things, get a new power every two levels, blah blah. once you hit like level 12, it takes a full night playing to level, and doing the same thing, fighting the same guys gets quite boring.

I guess my problem is theres just nothing new that enters the game. What you do levels 2-3 will be the same thing generally you do for the rest of the game, just with higher numbers.

Yea, well after playing boring grinds like Star Wars Galaxies and Eve online, having a completely combat focused mmog is quite refreshing. Can't say the lack of "other" things to do bothers me really. The basic princliple is pretty much identical to Phantasy Star Online, only with far more players. I'd say PSO had less content than COH but was still fantastic.

But if it's more content you're after the villian expansion launches soon and there's a new update due shortly.

once you get the basics down everything in any MMO is a grind... its just the amount of input required. Personally I havent found a MMO to fit my fancy since EQ... I just cant find the fun factor in things where the class balence is too simple.

Fair point but I'm not sure you could describe City of Heroes as a grind since it involves no repatative chores other than killing bad guys. Granted, this could become boring after a while but the same could be said of any game with a combat system.

The elements that keep this game fun for me are its lack of geeky stat tracking, item managment, skill training, crafting and all these other things that cynically keep people playing for month after month in the false hope that they'll achieve something at the end.

City of Heroes is basically PSO in a massive city with more players to interact with.
