couldn't they have come up with some better dialogue? (and story)

i love virtua fighter. i have since 2. i love it a lot! vf4e, best fighting game ever, i really believe it, and i play it a lot.

but why, oh why, after making the best game mechanics and such, do they add silly, silly sayings in english that make less sense with each successive game?

"i'll praise you for your strength"...."you're never gonna win...by that strength"..."it seems to me...I'M THE WINNER!"...."that's maaaaaaaaaaariner's power!"...."shut up....let's fight again!" true, its mostly jeff and wolf...i just feel like they could have come up with cooler sounding phrases pronounced normally in english.

and i know that there arent many fighting games out there with coherent stories, and vf does have some that are not so outlandish, world tournament, that sort of stuff....and i know without its stories, it wouldn't be the vf we all know and love, but come on... have you all actually *read* jeff's, goh's, and brad's stories on this website? did yu suzuki write those?! i don't think its something to be proud of. i mean, goh is part of J6, the evil organization, and he is supposed to some sort of undercover assassin of the traitors of the organization, seems all secretive and stuff, but he has J6 patches embroided all over his zombie-rags outfit (would someone please tell me why goh is a zombie, by the way? where is his brain eating throw) and on the back of his thug hoodie. and jeff, well this time around, he needs a fishing research vessel! god damned devil sharks! i hate em! hehe.....

like i said, i love virtua fighter. maybe this stuff is in here for a comic relief anyways.... what do you all think? any fav quote from the past from our cast of characters?

I hate Sarah's replies. Especialy the wooohooo one ;/

I think they just shouldnt have a story at all. Make it be someting like "It's year 3000, and vurtual reality has taken over peoples lives. Tournaments from games like Vf have sprung up all over the cities. You put on the helmet and envision yourself whoever you want to be". It will be almost true too.

I like Shuns and Kage's replies because they're in japanese ;/

    Well...
Virtua Fighter is made for the Japanese market, and as far as the lame English phrases are concerned it doesn't matter to the Japanese. Hell they probably think it sounds cool, just as many westerners think Japanese sounds cool (they do have alot of Engrish t-shirts after all). I also doubt the story is a big concern to them. It's an arcade game first and foremost, and I don't think anyone is following the storylines of games such as Metal Slug and Streetfighter. Really the story is an afterthought, and in my opinion could be taken out completely. Save some pages in the manual for more instructions I say. Although that doesn't mean we should take out the before/after game taunts. How then could we laugh at Wolf telling us to go back to school?

LOL, don't forget about the all time best win quote in VF history: "I'm gonna throw you again." Wolf, old win pose 1.

One of the worst is Jacky: "Yeeaaah!! Nobody can stop me!!"

On the flip side, all of Lei-Fei's taunts (and poses) are cool. /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

LeiFei's lines (in Japanese) while not as bad as the the white players, are still pretty cheesy.

Most Japanese players don't really understand. I"ve seen pages w/ translations for their benefit, and of course, my friends ask me.

I actually know a funny story about where Jeffry's lines came from. Perhaps we can gather around a campfire one day...

Yeah, they need to do something about the dialogue, c'mon Am2 how hard can it really be ?

I actually think the story is alright, but there should be more rivalries, like Ryu and Sagat ; Kyo and Iori ; Kaz and Heihachi... more bad guys. More characters like Goh, would make the story more interesting. And CG's would be welcomed but not necessary.

    All I wanna know is...

WTF is handcuff lightning?? I mean come on... the only worse line than that one is "Why am I so great?" But that's expected, since Lion is a fruit fairy anyways.

    It comes from Muhammed Ali.
Ive done wrastlin with an alligator, handcuffed lightning and put thunder in jail.

Although I can live without all of that stuff, I too would like to see more story elements unfold in the actual game. Special intros would be cool as well. Like when Wolf ecounters Akira or Jeffry, or when Akira encounters Wolf or Aoi. Lau/Pai, Jacky/Sarah; well, you get the idea. Most of the characters have some sort of friendly rivalry (Akira/Wolf), or grudge/relation with one another. So why is it so hard for Sega to simply showcase this stuff in the actual game; instead of making us have to read about it in the instruction manual. At the very least, the intro for Japanese PS2 Evo is a start...

They could have came up with better dialogue, they could have came up with better alot of things; but they didn't. So um... I guess you'll just have to settle for what you get. /versus/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

    Japanese ignorance of Western culture

Not only that, but the designers show a complete ignorance of Western culture. A guy from Italy named "Brad Burns"? /versus/images/graemlins/tongue.gif And he speaks American English, too....

A Canadian "Indian" who has red hair and looks white (Wolf).
    A guy named "Jeffry."
A guy who spells his name "Jacky," and not "Jackie."
A Frenchman who sounds like Don Knotts.

    And so on....

    Here's the full quote/poem:
I done something new for this fight! I done rassled with a alligator! That's right, I have rassled with a alligator. I done tussled with a whale! I done handcuffed lightning, throwed thunder in jail! That's *bad*. Only last week, I murdered a rock, injured a stone, hospitalized a brick. I'm so mean, I make medicine sick!

Bravo Replicant for the Muhammad Ali quote (all of his quotes should be common knowledge). But the thought of a post dedicated to VF story? It's like a post dedicated to the articles in Playboy. Seriously. It's a fighting game and the thought behind fighting games is to have awesome story (oops, I mean fight) so we should go about the business of getting into more of the deeper aspects of the game as opposed to getting into the story (hahahaha................HAHAHAHAHAHAHA).

You're right, but the gameplay is already rocksolid while the story needs some work. Actually that shows how good the game is when all we can really complain about is the story and stuff like winning phrases. But why bother put them in it, if you're not going to do them right ? I'm sure if Yu Suzuki wanted, he could've produced a more compelling story for the game but I guess he's saving that for VF Quest.

I never realized how poetic Mohammed Ali is/was. Did he make this stuff up on the fly or were they prepared ahead of time?
