CPU Rivalries

I'm curious as to the CPU's choice of opponents at any stage
of Kumite. I'm a 3rd Dan Lau (former 4th Dan twice demoted, 9 items, 58%
wins if that means anything) and I seem to be caught up in some
strange rivalries and "specific character" runs.

If I beat a low or higher ranking Lion, suddenly I'm playing Lions
every three or four matches. Or Shuns. Or Wolfs. Does this have to
do with win percentage? That my 58% Lau is stuck fighting "lower-tier"
CPU opponents like Wolf and Jeffrey and Shun? Sometimes it's Aoi. One after another. I mean, is the CPU
determining through its own "record system" that those particular characters
are more likely to be hovering around 60 or 70 percent, rather than the
powerhouses like other Laus or Sarahs or Akiras who probably win 80 to 90 % of the
    time?

And interestingly, my Lau has some bitter rivalries, probably because
he's stuck at 3rd. Of course there's the other 3rd Dans, the worst of which
is the Jacky and Pai. But there's a 5th Dan Lei called Manta Ray that sometimes appears
with a giant pig's head, sometimes not. Always a nasty fight there, simply because
Leis are tough as hell at any level above 1st Kyu. Then there's a 4th Dan Lau, Lonely Lau, that I
face at least twice each sitting lately. And every time I beat Lonely Lau, I get 6th Dan Lau Dead Meat, who destroys
me. Like the wrath of god for my sin of winning.

The point is, I'm not exactly complaining, just curious. Admittedly, I do NOT
enjoy losing to a guy with a giant pig's head. I'm guessing this is the CPU's
way of getting me to become better, mockingly. Perhaps facing the same damn
Kyus and 1st Dans, which get harder as those AIs catch up to me (it's like I am
training Yowwie Aoi to defeat me, simply because I'm forced to play against her
regularly in Kumite) is a way to annoy me into evolving beyond where I am.

    Re: CPU Rivalriesa

Don't call ANY of the characters lower tier... you will be assasinated... probably... Lei Fe CPU is really predictable... with Lau I would try and counter his moves with your fast punches or wait for a throw opportunity... I've also fought the same opponents lots, so maybe there is something there... after all, Kumite is supposed to simulate arcade style fighting... not that I know what that's like (sniff) because I live in barn (kidding)... wonder if this is just random... would be nice if others would keep track of who they fight ("revenge" matches etc)... (awaits more posts with baited breath)...

I must be distracted by the giant pig head. I admit the CPU Lei Fei is
predictable, in that it seems to be doing some very basic stuff with Lei, not
even a quarter of Lei's total offense. Just a lot of forward PP and forward K+G, only breaking out
the wild Lei stance changes when I let down the guard.

I'm telling you, there's something to this theory about the wrath of god.
I keep ripping a 1st Kyu Vanessa named Senorita and almost immediately I get
an 8th Dan Vanessa whose timing is impeccable and who throws and lunge hooks
    me into oblivion.

Wrath of god. The mechanized might of the CPU.

I have a rivalry with the Lions, especially rich kid, or something like that. Sometimes, he just flat out gives me a beating that harkens me back to my childhood whoopins' with the leather belt from my father. I mean if I'm not focusing against him, it's over. Sure I can just d+P, but that's no fun. I don't know if my Akira can take anymore peckings from Lion, he just pecks and pecks and pecks...and pecks! At least fighting him, I can work on my patience and self control, he pushes me that far.

Nobody burns my ass like a CPU Jacky, any rank. I considered
naming my Lau "Jacky Destroyer" but have yet to be able to
destroy any of them. I'm so obsessed and pissed off at the SIGHT
of a Jacky that I can't even fight effectively. As soon as Jacky lightning kicks his way into that
yell, "COME ON, YEAAAAH!", I'm ready to crush the PS2.
That blond piece of fluff shouldn't be that tough; then again, I LIKE hating
Jacky, he's strangely my idea of a villain: a cocky ostentatious twerp, the kind of
genetically-evolved superman who SEEMS invulnerable. I'm still trying to figure
out exactly how to get to him.

I have never played a human Jacky, so I have no idea if he is more or less
    as annoying as the CPU.

I hate the Jacky named Chicken...we are moving up the ranks together so i am constantly fighting him...and i always lose.....Manta Ray used to beat me all the time with ease, but now that i figured out his predictable patterns and stances i destroy him.

Chicken. Yes. Either a 1st or 3rd Dan. And a 4th Dan called Wild Jacky.

I mean, really. CPU Jacky can deliver one mid-high roundhouse kick (sorry to be ignorant of proper name) and one high knee and two or three punches and THAT's most of your lifebar? I may be exaggerating slightly, but not by much.

I mean, I get SPoD'd by Akira or Giant Swung by Wolf and I can make a comeback. With this blond frig I can't iniatiate ANY offense after taking damage because I'm trying to guard and save what's left? And that's because Jacky's so powerful? Am I getting hit more times than I can see, ala Sarah or Pai? Jacky seems to do minimal work to get fantastic results. WTF?

I don't want to turn this thread into a Jacky bitch-session, but I am referring to the CPU Jacky, not human Jackys. I know he's probably fun as hell to play, and why wouldn't he be? The guy's ridiculous.

ok some points of interest here, which i think you prolly know already, (one reason I just play my friend in the game now a days.) all kumite CPU opponents have the same pattern af attacking no matter what rank the only thing that changes is their agressiveness and reaction time, (meaning, they can block, throw, delay, and juggle better than when you were fighting against low rank characters. later

Dude, I know exactly how you feel. You have to learn to use some of the reversal and parrs that Akira has to have some real gratification when you are facing someone like pretty rich boy lion. Instead of just hitting, blocking or side stepping. I found it the most fun when you go head to head with a character except for wolf. It really improves your reaction time to a attack and gaves you the ability to see certain moves that coming at you. Even if it is a playing against a CPU rather than another person.

Well, I use Jacky and to be honest the other Jackies woop my ass all the time. But, the most annoying computer rival is WOLF!!!!!!! He is easy to beat some times, but the times he's not easy to beat he hets me pissed off. i mean to the point i turn off the system. The thing about Wolf is that basicly all his moves are throws so it gets me pissed. He can do two throws and a punch and beat me right there. Well, anyways i see what your sayin.

I've been having a lot of trouble with Jacky's too, but at last I found some ways do deal with them.
The solution is distance. You have to keep some distance between Lau and Jacky. I often start the fight with a [2]+[K]+[G] sweep. It knocks him down most of the time. Then I dash back to be out of his reach and let him come to me. When he comes in reach you can do the same move again or Lau's [4]+[K]+[G] which knocks him down again. The last move leaves you standing with your face to the other side. You wait until he gets up and then completes the move with a [2]+[K] or a [K]. Lau will turn around while completing these moves.
This is a technique that works for a lot of difficult opponents. Dashing back and sweeping them in stead of always keeping close to the opponent. Of course, you know that you don't have to stand and wait after knocking down an opponent? If you notice he'll stay down and not TR/QR, you MUST finish with Lau's [8]+[P]. Otherwise, dash back to try a sweep when they rise and come to you (CPU will always come to you).
Other moves that work well with Jacky are:
[6]+[P] (when it hits, add a throw like [6]+[P]+[G]
    [3]+[K] + [P] + [K]
    punches: [P][P][P]x
    [6]+[P]+[K]
    [P]+[K] to get some distance
more risky: [9]+[K] followed up by [2]+[P], [2_]+K,K

Secondly, after Jacky finishes his attack, which you block of course, he's wide open for a throw. Use them a LOT. And again, if he does not TR/QR, finish with [8]+[P] and get the hell out of there so you can sweep him when he rises and runs to you (his long legs just beg for a sweep).

I rarely use Lau's combo's and juggles on Jacky, because they're often auto-parryd; you can risk starting the fight with his superknife combo, but after the start it rarely hits.

This is how I started to get a grip on Jacky. Now, I can even tackle a Highking Jacky when I do my best. And yes, now and again, I get crushed by one of them, but who isn't?

    Hope this helps you!

OK... the thread's turned into "how to beat jacky with Lau"... so1. Training.. put jacky on lvl 4 or 5 to get used to his attack patterns + timing...2. When doing this wait for those stupid aerial knees and somersaults and then try to get in your [3][P][P][P][P][2][K] etc combos3. Try BEING Jaacky... not metaphysically, just in the game... you may find more weaknesses that way4. Don't listen to me because I don't play Kacky.. sorry..JaCkY... search for more...

I apologize for turning the thread into a "BEAT JACKY w/ LAU"
thread, but hating Jacky is like being in love right now: all my thoughts
are ON him, and every conversation goes BACK to him.

In terms of rivalries, there is definitely a Kumite logic: not only the Wrath of
God logic (sending that high-ranking character to exact revenge for
beating a low-rank same character), but the CPU Return Match, which is
always a second go-round with the character you just beat, if not IMMEDIATELY
after, then soon. But not always. Sometimes you just have to stew in a bad loss to some 4th
Dan you ALMOST had. I wish by god that I could challenge characters directly, and
I don't mean same rank. If you have to spend your time between same-rank
matches fighting non-rank opponents, then why not have an option to fight specific
non-rank characters. The CPU could determine a set of, say, five potential opponents after
you've WON a match. This set of five could include challengers, but you'd get to
choose the challenger instead of being forced to play 1st Kyus all the time. You'd stick
to Dans, and if a Champion or Hero wanted to challenge, then you'd HAVE TO face them
    automatically.

The only difference would be after a loss to a non-same-rank, you could challenge them and get
a return match if you won your NEXT fight. Whether that was same-rank or not. This might add
spice to the lulls between same-rank fights as you're moving up (the Dans anyway). I know the lull is
supposed to allow you to lose a match without potentially losing rank, but I'm constantly training while
    fighting, being a newb.

I don't know if this is viable. Just as an option to challenge certain Dans that
you are ALREADY fighting, only randomly. You'd get a first match and a return
match, after that you'd have to move on. I'd love the option to get a return
match immediately with a non-same-rank rival, like Manta Ray, Wild Jacky, Atlas (a 5th Dan
    Wolf.

The only problem with the above would be that, in winning non-same-rank matches and
getting an option to challenge certain specific CPU characters, some cheap cheating down > P slug
would choose Lion if there was one, and just Lion his way up the Dans. Though a problem, is
it any different than a player quitting out of a match he's about to lose, to save
ranking or %? Only thing you can hope for there is a corrupted mem card.

I think that they get pissed once you take an item from them, i mean, Manta Ray was easy (i cant belive you guys, i kicked his ass with that dobule kick) but as i met him again, he got more and more diffucult, still kicked his ass though. Oh, and i know that this has nothing to do with the subject, but how do you advance after you get to first dan?

Kumite probs usually can be solved by LPETE. Or setup some elbows or other quick mid-level blocked moves with a back CD and do a float starter ( you'll be surprised how often you MC even against human opps. ).

I continue to get challenged, and killed, by a CPU 6th Dan Lau named
Dead Meat. Now, it's been mentioned here about items. That's an
interesting thought, but modified: perhaps Dead Meat Lau is trying to
win an item from ME. Is this the case? I mean, once you win an item, and
equip it, are you then able to lose it back to the CPU? I don't usually
equip Lau with anything, only because I'm not that crazy about the 10
items I have, except for maybe the ruby braces and the white tiger braces. I won some spiked shoulderpads
that look like an alien life form is trying to mate with Lau's head. So I don't put
    that stuff on him.

Still, I'm curious about this. I'm sure it's been answered thousands of times, but
is Dead Meat seeking items I might be wearing? I mean, surely this AI knows it's
got my number (right now)? It's not like it NEEDS to challenge my Lau, and it is one of the
only Laus I keep fighting over and over.

No, you can't lose items in Kumite mode.
One of my favorite ways to destroy Jacky's:
open round with [4]+[K]+[G] or [2]+[K]+[G]. Go back a little bit by tapping [4],[4]. Repeat with [4]+[K]+[G] which leaves you with your back turned to Jacky. Wait till he gets up and runs to you. When he's in reach: [2]+[K]+[G]. When he gets up: [4]+[K]+[G]. You're again with your back turned to Jacky. When he gets up [2]+[K]+[G]. I've had a number of 'Excellents' with this tactic (which, of course, does not work againts human players).
Lau's [6]+[P],[P] works very well too. You can also elbow him into a throw: [6]+[P], [6]+[P]+[G] (or another throw).
PS: the [K]+[G] sweeps tactic works against most characters. Just back up a bit, and let them run to you just in reach to start with the sweeps.
