Creation of new stick for SFIV/VF5

I'm currently using my old stick I built to play CPS2 games and Dreamcast fighters in the past. Its a HAPP joystick with Sanwa buttons soldered to a ps2 controller board.

What I'm looking to make is something which has a USB cable attached for maximum compatibility with PC/360 and PS3 plus PS2 backwards compatibility. Is this possible and how would you go about it? Is it best to cannibalize an existing controller like the VSHG and solder in the 360 board with a switch or start from scratch with my own Sanwa buttons, sticks and a ps3 controller? As written, I'm looking for maximum compatibility and am comfortable creating the shell myself out of wood or metal.

It would be especially nice to hear from 001 on this.

I think the best way is to buy a cheap 3rd party xbox wired controller and mod it. I will work on the PC as well, but not on a PS3.

The reason I say this is because despite using USB the 360 doesn't allow other controllers to work, so to make it really compatible you will have to put both PBC's inside...lots of work really.

While the standard MadCatz controllers (not the Fightpads) are abysmal to use, the later models have really good PCBs to use for 360/PC.

So does it need to have all 3 cables (360/ps3 and PS2) coming out of the stick or can I just use 1 or 2. In an ideal world, you would just have a female sockets on the stick then plug in extension cables to connect to consoles...USB is probably the preferred connector, and as I already have my PS2 stick, not really bothered about it being PS2 compatible, though it would be nice to cut down on clutter...

Bottom line is I can see it needing 2x PCB's inside for PS3 and 360, but how would you get it to output as one universal USB?

Thanks for the replies so far!

You will need 2 cables out for PS and 360. If you use an aftermarket PS2 controler, you can get a converter that will make it work with a PS3. They made them for Guitar Hero, but they worked fine when I was playing on PS3 with my PS2 based stick.
