    Got your attention, didn't I?

Well the tournament is finally over and people have gone back home. I am right now in the Ontario airport, just chillin on wireless.

First of all I would like to thank everyone who came and made Evo2k4 a memorable event for me. From near and far, we had people from all over the place getting together and basically having fun. It was nice to see some people again, and to meet some new guys.

    Myke--
Thanks for everything. Running the tournament, dealing with the delays, and matches with you. Sorry about not getting the money shot at Frisco's

    Phoenixdth--
Countless thanks for directions, letting me crash at your place, and your Frisco's info. Nice house party the first night, too. Good luck with your PS2

    Tim--
Good to see you again in LA. Sucks about your baggage and all at the beginning. Good matches. Kurita and BC were happy to see you again.

    Cappo--
It was awesome playing games and just chillin with you for the last month or so. We'll have to do this shit again some time, maybe in Korea or Japan?

    Shou--
Nice play in the tourney man. It was nice to have one of us actually make the Japanese be scared as opposed to last year where all we could do was hold our dicks in amazement at their skills. See you back in SF.

    Stomp--
Thanks for your hospitality with the Japan guys, as they were glad to have someone there who was both willing and able to chat with them for long periods of time. Long live Shun!

    LPC--
Good to see you again man. Long live In n Out!

    Goatcheeseblues--
Keep ya head up playa. Guess from now on we'll both have to practice evade->dragon cannon.

    adamYUKI--
Good to get to talk to you this time around man. Didn't even say Hi even at Beat Tribe this spring. Always glad to meet someone who is into the works of the most important Americans alive. See you in Japan in September.

    Ktalldude--
Yo, see you around Waseda son.

    ironjunkie--
Too bad we didn't have a chance to blaze yo. Hope to see you in Japan next week.

    ryan--
Once again, good matches. You are one of my toughest matchups. Let me know if you come to Japan some time again.

    Sanjuro--
Nice to see you again too man. Hope to see you at next year's event.

    Konjou akira--
You're a cool cat man. Next time we have the chance to organize some big event I will let you know for sure. I'll try to get up to NYC sometime soon.

    SillyWilly--
You have improved a lot since last year man. Keep up the good work!

    Maddy--
What can I say? You have a really tight game. When you broke Itazan's 6PG I think maybe only the three of us understood how ridiculous that was. Glad you could make it to this year's Evo.

    Thalis--
Thanks for hosting us the first night. It was truly a great time. Good luck getting FT and all.

    Siyko--
    Long live Shun players!

    Everyone else--
Good matches. I think we all got to see what we wanted, whether it was Japanese players in action, friends from all over the place, good matches, or fake tits. I hope the scene will continue to grow even with FT's release.

I have some pictures up at http://www.omtay.com/~dave/evo/evo.html for those interested.

    Later.

    EVO2004 Hot or Not?

Better post before I forget everything eh? I'll do this <font color="orange">HOT OR NOT</font> style!

    <font color="orange">HOT</font>

<ul type="square">[*]The entire SoCal crew who opened up their homes to us, and drove us around constantly, everywhere. A big THANKYOU to PhoenixDth, Plague and Catherine, GoatCheeseBlues, SillyWilly, Dobi and Ticky and all the rest. You guys make this event all the more worth while.
[*]mukatsuku_shun for the awesome Japanese hookup. Personally, I was honoured to meet and play Kurita again, Itazan was everything you said he'd be and MORE, and Raoh was hella cool! My hat off to you, sir. Your efforts behind the scenes go a long, long way.
[*]All the VFDC'ers who made the long trip out to support VF at this event. Ours may have been the smallest turnout, but I felt our community was pretty tight in the end, despite all the flames leading up to it.
[*]Siyko, Shang, and maddy and stomp for helping me run the pool brackets and chase people down.
[*]The Boston crew in general, awesome to see, room and hang out with you guys again.
[*]The NYC crew, nice to see you guys on the West Coast! Konjou, just wanted to say that I think your Akira has improved greatly since I last saw you in NYC some months ago. Keep up your training!
[*]Ticky's Goh! Most improved player over the weekend IMO. Watch out for this guy!
[*]Shang's "go back to schooling" against lonelyfighter in the hotel. Shit was hilarious.
[*]Shang throwing a bottle of water to me and saying, "here you go, Superman"
[*]Stomp's crazy pad styles and even crazier storytelling
[*]VF4Evo finals. Nobody expected them to pan out that way!
[*]3S finals. Daigo's parrying Justin Wong's ChunLi super with no life left. I lost my voice on that one. It was the gaming moment of the entire EVO2004 for me! To quote Seth Killian, "unadulterated madness!"
    [*]Korean BBQ
    [*]Frisco's /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif

    <font color="orange">NOT</font>

    <ul type="square">[*]LA traffic
    [*]LA public transport
[*]Waiting 3 hours in the queue for registration
[*]Qualification starting late, meaning VF didn't finish until 1:30am

[*]LPC not offering his TV for the house party... bitch! /versus/images/graemlins/tongue.gif (though, way to come through Plague!)
[*]Sanjuro having his chips, joystick, and almost his hotel room stolen! I'll let him tell those stories /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif
[*]Shou having his water stolen. We saw it with our own eyes and did nothing about it /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Just some final words. If I seemed pissed off or impatient with anyone at the tournament then I apologise. It gets a little frustrating trying to run the tourney, look for missing people, shouting out their names, and answer the same question 239 times. I trust everyone had a good time, and hope that we can do it all again next time.

While I may have been running the VF side of things, there were many aspects completely out of my control. If you're interested in hearing from the organisers about what went right and wrong, and have any suggestions for next time, then read the Evo2k4 Post Mortem thread over at shoryuken.com. They have an Evo2k4 forum setup so if you have anything else to contribute about the event, then let them know!

    Overall, EVO2004 was definitely <font color="orange">HOT!</font>

Hi All, I'd just like to give a few shout outs to a few peeps:

Props to Brian for letting me come to the outdoor VF session and putting me up at his pad for the night.
    "Thanks Brian".

Props to Myke for the organisation and for having the best Brad I've ever seen OOJ.

Props to Shang for being a cool guy in real life.

Props to Maddy for having the best Akira I've ever seen OOJ.

Props to Shou for placing 2nd in the tournament, he really played much better than me in this tournament. Well actually the Japanese are guaranteed to win so they don't count.

Shou came 1st really, well done, and I guess that makes me 2nd right? - "Hey, where's my prize money"? - :p

Props to Kurita and Bear Crusher for showing up, it was great to see them again.

Props to Adam and the NYC crew for showing up, I can never get enough of those guys.

Props to Jerky for letting me borrow his PS2 all day - I got to practice on Tekken Tag - hehe.

I'm gonna add more props later.

    bye

    Re: EVO2004 Hot or Not?

For those of you who don't know already, WORK SUCKS!

When your list of responsibilities increases & your workload increases & your hours increase but your pay remains the same, it really is nice to remember the last good thing that happened...vacation!

The tone for my evo2k4 was set long before I made it to cali. I missed my flight out of Baton Rouge because everyone here is stupid (not just me) & we all conspired to keep me on the ground an extra couple hours. When I finally got in the air though, I happened to be sitting next to the prettiest girl on the plane. I had even cooked for her the week before. She's going to be a doctor and travel the world but in the meantime she's got beautiful toes & I ain't even a foot guy.

The sour just adds flavah, you know?

I was well served to remember this from time to time during the extended weekend.

For example, none of my boys came with me so any great tales of victory would have to rest on my shoulders, which is just ridiculous. The flipside? I had plenty of good times chilling with guys I otherwise would have gotten to know only in passing.

SillyWilly- So much love dude...I ain't the violent type but had that fool decided to let something move other than his lips, I had his boys in check for you. PreviaPower baby!

Siyko- Your knowledge of the game impressed me in Boston & was reiterated at evo2k4. You really seem to have that fire that's going to make you a top player...already you have streak capabilities & I'm sure we can't blame all of that on Shun /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif.

Jerky- After that first night at Brian's I didn't see you so much...Still, without doubt, my favorite Jacky & great to see you again.

Shang- Screw what anybody says, I dig the "Boston style"...now at the house when you get hit with 3 or 4 of the same things in a row then switched up on, you've been "go back to schooled". That & "supermaaaan" have been mantra'd. Thanks for that.

Martin- I think I enjoyed watching your matches more than anyone elses, save perhaps adamYUKI's backyard extravaganza & itabashi zangief's 16+drink acting a fool. Lion is so your boy & dammit if you can't make a mutherfucker grin.

Ticky- You're so good at pulling out matches...it's sick really & I think watching you I finally learned how to struggle properly ("just make it sound like ticky" I've told myself a few times lately to good effect). You and your brother have some hot stuff & it'll be really nice to see the effects of this regional crossfertilization we've got going with ya'lls move out to cali. Best of luck to you and your brother. Oh, by the way...thanks for the slo-mo!

Brian (GCB)- You always seemed to be laughing or smiling, especially with your one (oh shit! now it's two!) move akira. My vacation wouldn't have been nearly what it was without your hospitality. Thankyou in buckets!

Phoenixdth- Is there a character you don't have clean combos with? It seemed no matter who you picked (and you picked plenty) you had a winning shot & some clean execution. 3 tkod's in one match ain't easy to stomach. Perhaps next time the Baton Rouge approach will be easier to stomach too...we're working on making sure to always delay our...

Andy- I didn't get to play you as much as I would have liked. I get the feeling I could have learned a lot from you...nonetheless it was great to see you again and chat & definitely next time.

Talis & Catherine- Nice seeing and enjoying a meal with the two of you. We didn't get any games in but happy couples make my day, so thanks!

Brian (LPC)- We didn't get a chance to hookup on the gameside this time but I'm sure you'll get the opportunity to shine next time.

spotlite- Inside of three of you matches with andy I think I saw probably 3 different combos I rarely (if ever) see. Much respect.

Ken_I- I've never seen such a sleepy guy drive! Thanks for the ride & the many chats over cigarettes...good showing in the tourney too!

Killbomb- It was neat watching your pai get hotter and hotter as you became more comfortable...the girl grew up so quick!

Kaminari_Oyagi- I woulda been homeless & stickless were it not for you! Thankyou tons for everything. Also, man you move fast! whew! I shoulda been watching your hands more...beautiful stuff!

Stomp- Just the nicest guy. padmagic!

dave (m_shun)- I haven't forgotten about that beer I owe you!

shou- Congrats dude...I experienced firsthand how difficult you were to touch in the tourney. You clearly worked really hard & this is one instance where there ain't an iota of shame in second place. All of NAVF should be proud of you.

cappo- You play on this other level. Wow.

maddy- hands down the best end taunt I've seen. You're also so positive and encouraging & a straight up akira badass besides being (ask them, they'll tell you) everyone's hero.

yoshiro- Good stuff bro...you're gonna be so hard to handle for everyone next time...look out for this guy fellas!

ryan- your invention is spectacular...I think when everything else falls away, the shit you come up with on the fly is just fantastic. Your lau is vicious. Your Akira is tight. Your kage is awsome. Man you are fucking talented. Thanks for the games.

konjou- Your defense is rock solid & your akira is just plain beautiful. I feel like we could have chatted and played for hours upon hours as you have so much knowledge and clearly work hard to maintain your high standard.

    My Teachers!

adamYUKI- after you raped everyone in the backyard that's all they could talk about "man, did you see how adam found out how I would act in a certain situation then use it to fuck me over?". An amazing display of what is possible in this game. I remember from our matches you:

    provoked [4][P] crushed by [1][K]+[G]
    provoked [P] (whiff) answered [6][4][4][P]+[K]
    provoked [4][3][P][P] (dodge/whiff) answered [4][4][P]+[K] muahahaha

and you were doing this to everyone systematically. "zero drinks...minus one...minus two" Thankyou for playing, you are truly a virtua fighter. Also, thanks for taking the time out to play & give me encouragement and pointers...I'll make you proud.

MYKE! Akira after 3am is such the best policy...I had more fun doing that (no inputs & all) than anything else the whole time. All the same, I feel like my lack of development as a player kinda pisses you off. But I gotta say with all of the playing I did and all that I saw I have come back home a stronger player who knows where his weaknesses lie and how to combat them. We will all be beasts when you see us again, I promise...you see, you're like the 800 pound gorilla or something. Much love.

    SHIT THAT GOT GANKED

So...day one I had my fill of casual play in the bring your own console room so I went down to the arcade for some tuna, chips & gatorade. Half way through my meal I decide to reup on the tuna and so I go to the vending machine to make my selection. While I'm there this 5'6" gamer with a grey shirt comes up singing some song I can't quite make out. Only crazy men where I'm from sing so I actually notice his height and the shirt color before he kinda darts off too quickly. I ignore the too quickly part and go back to hooking up the tuna but as I turn back to sit down, I notice my chips are missing. Fucker stole my sunchips! There were like five left in the goddamned bag. Why the shit would you steal 5 potato chips? Further, why the shit would you steal food from a mutherfucker who could probably eat you were he hungry enough? What are you doing...GET AWAY!

Next day I left the hotel room door propped open for a moment (since I didn't have a key & stomp was on an errand & I wasn't sure if he had a key) while I went upstairs to see what was up in the boston room. I left my redball namco stick on the table. When I returned the room was as I left it save said redball namco stick. I even remember starting to the stairs wondering if leaving the door open wasn't a poor idea in a hotel full of gamers who had already proven themselves to be less than trustworthy with my shit. Remember the sunchips? You gamers are a rotten batch of little cumstains.

Of course you know though that bad shit will either fly solo or come in threes. Bullshit rarely duets.

I was dropped off at the Shilo at 530am monday morning. Tim, Bill & Steven had already checked out and it was just me in the hotel. I was a little groggy as I slipped the key in the lock and turned. Nothing. I mean, the lock turned but the knob didn't move & I hadn't used a key enough in the room (reference joystick incident) to remember if the knob turned upon unlocking or not. Nonetheless I could not gain entree into my room (faulty knob? I got bounced when everyone else checked out? bad key?) and so I had to slide to the front desk where the night manager of the hotel was working. I hit the lobby thinking even that this guy's job and the job I had until the front of vacation were terribly similar. Too fucking so as it turns out.

    "Can I help you?"
"Yeah, I don't know what's wrong...I'm in 121 and my key doesn't seem to work...Is there a history of problems with that doorknob or something?"
"Which room is it?" he asked, making me think my hypothesis might have been correct.
    "121"
"Okay, I send security back with you"

Security? Why security, right? So I follow security down and he tries my key then he tries his key then he tries my key again.

    "Key works...the deadbolt's locked."
And I'm thinking...why the fuck...who the fuck...why is the deadbolt locked.
"Are you sure there's nobody in there?" his tone was rather more serious that might make one comfortable.
"There shouldn't be...they all checked out earlier."
He broke out the deadbolt key. Door opens like 4 inches...SMACK.
"Someone put a chair in front of the door."

The signpost up ahead, you have now entered the twilight zone.

    Cell phone time.

"Hello, yes, this is security...we seem to have another incident."

Huh? Another incident. Don't fucking tell me when we open the door there's gonna be a fucking bloodbath on the other side. I came down here for a videofuckinggame convention and yeah there was this guy who had to sleep on the floor cause he couldn't be in the same queen size with another man and this other guy who gave guys backrubs & maybe I'm kinda off but ain't no dahmer ass murdering fucks in my click I don't care what you think about STL...FLA...the dirty dirty...
honestly, I was expecting high level axemurdering grossness...
"excuse me sir...but what do you mean by 'incident'"
"There's this guy...we don't know maybe he has a key. He breaks into rooms and orders dirty movies...help me push this door."

So we push the door & dislodge the chair in front it.

There were towels by the door like the guy had been smoking. The table that had been between the tv and the two beds as a joystick stand was still there but now there was a towel layed across it. Between the two beds was a chair (which hadn't been there before) on which was placed a sheet and more towels. The room was littered with little balled up napkins and over in the corner were a variety of lubricants and more balled up little napkins.

As a final stroke of bad yomi for the trip...I had placed my clothes in the drawer below the television upon arrival at the room on Thursday & had kept the drawer open for the whole trip...my clothes may or may not have been exposed to mister little balled up napkin.

After a thorough investigation it was determined the perp must have entered through the window and (given his movie rental time) made his exit as my key was hitting the lock at 530am.

When you make your reservations for next year at the Shilo Inn (if you must) request a room above the first floor not accessible by any open windows. Also ask if the management knows whether any penis weilding bandits had ever washed the room in nut. You can never be too careful.

Sanjuro I love your posts and as for this report - NICE. When you and your security buddy found the door jammed shut I thought there was going to be a world of dead hookers and premium drugs on the other side. Re: EVO2004 Hot or Not?

Sanjuro, as always, your reports are such a joy to read. Thank you so much for sharing!

I just want to clear up something though, I can never be pissed off at you for that reason you stated, which is also bullshit I might add. I don't know what it was that may have given you that impression but I just want you to know that I never, ever felt that way when we played, so don't torture yourself over it! Also, I noticed you weren't having the easiest times with the joystick-positioning there, and I don't blame you. I'm used to playing on a coffee table personally, so prolonged periods of playing on my lap doesn't exactly thrill me either.

BTW, the Akira after 3am policy rocks, eh? Kinda works well with the "No Ninjas after 2am" rule too!

Anyway it's all good, and again, a pleasure meeting you. I'm honored if I have inspired you to seek your inner beast. This 800 pound gorilla will be waiting! /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

    One last note...

In my "hot or not" post, I forgot to give props to Ryan! Ryan, although you probably didn't perform as well as you had liked to in the tournament (we should form a club, heh), I think you played remarkably well throughout the entire event, and it was cool seeing you again. Congrats on 1st place for TTT btw! Being a strong contender in so many different 3D games is extremely impressive! And don't forget: what sets our Kages apart can be our biggest weakness /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif

it's displacement or something. i find myself doing the same stupid shit again (or rather just the same shit again...shrm in this spot...DE>blocked>knee EVERY TIME...always evade here...whiff TE's...busted combos...more holes than a sieve really) & know you would be chewing yourself out for it. also we'd all clearly like to face solid, inventive, to-the-wire competition when we travel. icing fools with one hand tied behind your back can't be fun forever...in spots I know I was tougher this time, but my roll over and play dead vs Kage routine can't continue. I'm babbling and I was really just talking about the game. The love is 100%. This is given.
