Namco has revealed its preliminary line-up of software for next week's Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, finally confirming the presence of massively anticipated fighting sequel Tekken 5.
Regular readers will recall we first revealed Namco's plans to unveil Tekken 5 at E3 early last month (see here); at the time a spokesperson for Namco's US office was quoted on a US site as stating the report was simply not true, but today's announcement sets our story in stone.

No further details were officially disclosed, but we can reveal that fans of the cult series are in for a surprise as development has shifted the focus of the acclaimed series.

A source operating close to Namco spoke of a 'new direction' for the game, pursued as a direct result of staunch rival Sega's protracted and continued dominance of the genre with Virtua Fighter 4, which has been the highest grossing coin-op in Japanese arcades for two years running.

"The development team has taken a long, hard look at the success of Virtua Fighter 4 and is attempting to change [Tekken 5's] gameplay accordingly, in order to compete more effectively," our source told us. We won't know exactly what this means in real terms until at least the show itself, although Namco may yet hold full details back until Tokyo Game Show later this year.

And while the E3 list issued by Namco today covers a broad base (see below for full details) our source assured us that these titles only scratch the surface of what Namco has in store. "This is a very exciting year for Namco, with a huge range of titles in store," we were told. "Expect new franchises, updates and remixed updates, plus full support across all platforms, which includes DS and PSP."

Such titles are likely to form part of announcements in the hardware manufacturers' pre- E3 conference calls. Timing is an issues. "E3 has more of a focus on imminent product so Namco may well hold things back for TGS [Tokyo Games Show], but expect a presence in the conference calls," our source added.

Sorry for sounding like a fanboy but "IN YOUR FACE TEKKEN PLAYERS!" This was something I've been saying for a VERY long time and yet many Tekken fans never believed me. Now they, Namco, said it themselves!

At least I can give Namco credit for this, to have the balls to say something like that. One thing I still look down is the guys over at Tecmo when he said that nothing from DOA (Dead or Alive) came from VF and DOA is the true pioneer of 3D fighting games and VF4 doesn't compare.

Well, if any still denys about the Tekken development admiration from VF (actually started more from Tekken 3 than 2) then... Heh.

Anyone please feel free to put that news in a Tekken forum. /versus/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Why is this in Junky's Jungle? There's a TK5 thread in general already. Maybe even more than one.
