i've finally gotten to the point where i'm brushing up my shotty defense, and i'm having a slight problem with fuzzy guarding.

it seems to me that the only way to get the initial crouch guard is to hold /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif for anywhere between 26 and 34 frames.

correct me if i'm wrong, but it seems to me that the moves' disadvantage doesn't effect how long it takes for the crouch guard to come out. i've been trying this with jacky's /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d_.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, and every time i've had a successful fuzzy was when i held /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif for 26-34 frames.

i only ask because i don't want to be misinformed (or worse yet, misinforming anyone). in an actual match i'm definitely going to be basing my timing off of visual cues, but i'd like a number to aim for so i can at least go into dojo and quantify how well i'm doing.

In order to quantify how well you are fuzzy guarding, go into Dojo Mode and set the CPU to Counterattack 5. Now the CPU will either throw or mid-attack you after a blocked attack of yours. Try to fuzzy after that then to avoid both punishment options.

that's what i've been doing. i usually end up with a successful fuzzy, though i'm still a bit fuzzy (pun completely intended) on the exact mechanics behind it.

Pressing /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif will put you into crouch in 7 frames.

Now, consider that you just did a move that put you into -5. (Ie. opponent recovers 5 frames faster than you). Opponent does immediate throw. Throw execution speed is 12 frames. Because he had 5 frame headstart, the throw is active on the 7th frame after you have recovered.

But, you press /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif so that you start to crouch immediately after you recover. This will put you into crouch in 7 frames, meaning that once the throw goes active, on the 7th frame after your recover, you are crouching. Therefore the throw will whiff.

Actual fuzzy guard means that in addition to simply crouching, you release stick to neutral at correct timing so that if opponent had done a standard midattack instead of a throw (generally 14 frames or slower), you are inputting /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif when that midattack goes active. It doesnt matter if youre in crouching animation, if youre holding /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif instead of /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif when the midattack goes active, you will 'teleport' to standing and block it. This whole thing about defending against both, is only possible because throw is faster than midattack. If they were same speed, fuzzy guard would be impossible because you cant be crouching and standing at same time.

Getting the timing right consistently isnt actually very easy.
-5 is the biggest disadvantage you can do /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif fuzzy guard in. In -6 you can fuzzy, but you need to crouch using crouch dash (/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif) instead, because it puts you into crouch in 6 frames, 1 frame faster than /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif.

I use fuzzy in -4..-6 situations, less disadvantage than that isnt actually much of a disadvantage and getting fuzzy timing right gets too 'fuzzy'. You can consider other options in -3 or less, such as simply attack/block.

Correct with strikes. You will be able to crouch guard even at -9 to avoid high strikes. High Strikes and high throws have different properties in relationship to how you can crouch uinder it.

    different ways to crouch

I really really hate to ask dumb questions on VFDC because they
can get you pwned fast, so please everyone have mercy on an old monk [IMG]

Is there any difference between buffering the commands for guard and the concept of fuzzy guard [IMG]

If I'm buffering [2] [G] while paying attention to my adv/disadvantage scenario isn't that the same as fuzzy guard [IMG]

Everytime I luck up an pull off a successful fuzzy G, it seems like plain old command buffering

You cant actually buffer [2][G], because if you release it before the buffer is over and youre free to move, nothing happens. But you should start holding it before your character is free to move so that you start crouching at the first possible moment.

With crouch dash you can buffer it, but I believe you cant press guard into the buffer or the crouchdash will be canceled into guard too early and you can get thrown. You can buffer the crouchdash itself though, just wait a bit before pressing guard.

Every time I think I've got the buffering down,I get a new piece of information that let's me know I don't know WTF I'm doin [IMG] So [2] [G] is being held while the input buffer is not accepting commands right [IMG]

I'm checking out the VF5 Wiki (which is excellent) but the buffering section although very good, can always benefit from more examples and scenarios. So [2] [G] is not effective during BT because of frame counts. What about [6] [6] during BT [IMG]

Why not just test it in the dojo? Its really simple to get it working with trial and error if you know what you are supposed to input. All you need is know couple single moves on your character that are -5 and -6 on block.

    For Akira:
    [6][6][P] (-5)
    [3][K] (-6)
