I was wondering. Does anyone feel like they've simply maxed out yet? Like they aren't going to get any better with their current character. I know with lei fei my game is still growing in leaps and bounds. And i haven't even touched your frame data yet. At anytime i could spend 2 months learning all frame data and be that much stronger. I am developing better defensive techniques all the time. More and more i'm solidifying my offense to defense transitions. My oki game is becoming deeper and more well rounded. My spacing is resulting in less whiffs by me and more by my opponents. My understanding of the mixup game is slowly, very slowly allowing me to know best options and variants my opponent may expoit. My ability to read/predict an opponents choices is increasing. And again, i haven't learned any of the other characters yet. Does everyone feel they have this many avenues for improvement, or do some people simply think, they have 'maxed out' with their characters.

The way to continue getting stronger is by traveling. A VF gathering is a pure concentrated blast of information that will improve your game. You learn from everyone.

The way to get stronger is by travelling on foot. walk few hundred miles to the next gathering, challenging people in every town on the way there.

I felt that i had plateaued a while back, which was depressing as i've never been that good. Turns out i was just playing better opponents more often. I'm trying to develop some sort of defence with my Eileen and i've got lots to learn. Mirror matches against people better than you helps. Kingo shows me ALL my bad habits. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif

I've still got a long way to go.

I'm trying to learn all the characters a little at the moment.

I've noticed that regardless of player skill I have a lot of trouble with Eileen, Sarah, Pai, Lei, Shun, Lion, Vanessa and Jeffry.

That's eight characters I feel uncomfortable fighting against because I don't know their transitions, strings basic setups, sabaki's and such.

A pretty big hole in my game.

My VF power level isn't over 9000 just yet.

I'll get there though.

If your anything like me, you can't really be told how to perform better. Everything the pros say helps, but until you learn why you should do what they say, it doesn't mean much. And the only way to learn why is experience. I wish I could just hear what to do and meld it into my game, but I can't.

But I definitely HAVE felt like I've peaked my skill before. It's such a shitty feeling. But then one day everything kind of comes together and you figure out what you were missing. VF is like putting together a big puzzle to me, unfortunately I'm still missing a lot of the pieces. Hell I don't even know what the pieces are right now. I just keep playing until I figure that out /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shocked.gif

mirror matches are nice. When I was first getting my bearings in the competitive gaming world I just anted to do mirror matches. Now I tend to stray away from them when I'm playing eileen. I find them kind of boring now, can't really elaborate on why but just do.

I love fighting other eileen's just not fore really long sessions unless they have a playstyle very different from my own.

While I do feel like I've done as good as I can with my Jeff I know while I improve so do the other players. And in order for me to be able to keep up my "A game" I'm going to need to step up and continue to improve ya know? You have to keep finding ways to make yourself better even when you think you've maxed out.

Or pokemon.

I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was!

To find them is my real test, to beat them is my cause.

I will travel across the land; searching far and wide. Each opponent will understand that there's no place to hide!

Offline Virtua Fighter 5 competition: Gotta find 'em all.

I can't remember how the rest of pokemon song goes but you get the picture.

I thought that too. It just reminds me of Ryu's 3S ending.

It isn't about knowing your character at that point, it is about being consistent overall and staying at that level. Even if you supposedly maxed out you talents you can always mix things up every so often to make your game better for a day or so and build up on that. Personally I feel I have come really close to my limit even though I feel I can do more all the time, I don't see myself playing that much better on most days.

I think improving takes a certain amount of sacrifice. You have to sorta step out of your shoes and analyze+try things out. Even if you losew, practice eteg and you might surprise yourself. Focus on your opponents moves, find points where holes/gaps are left open, and use the appropriate attacks to punish them.

I agree most of all with Cozby's second point - if you really want to improve, I'm a strong believer that you have to be willing to look critically at your game, and determine exactly where you are weakest. I'm least likely to practice the things I need to work on the most, because they're the least fun for me to do - this is a kind of sacrifice that you have to be willing to make (at least from point of view): A bit of boredom and annoyance in the short term for a lot more fun in the long run. We all agree that being better and improving is part of what makes the game fun right?

Personally I think blogs or writing in the forums are also a good way to improve - considering how your game works, and being willing to expose your weaknesses and flaws (as well as your strengths) can help you realize exactly what you need to work on next, and will gain you valuable feedback. Participating in discussions causes you to articulate your ideas in a way that you may not have done while playing the game, and this can also grant you new insights that you may not have had before clarifying it.

Although I don't have the luxury to travel (much less even play in arcades...), if virtua fighter is anything like the hobbies I have that actually do have a scene out where I live, playing in tournaments and against other better players is always going to help elevate your game.

Great topic - thanks for bringing this up!

In my opinion getting better is just a matter of playing the game.
The more you play, the better you get. Of course you have to be critical of your game and all, but mostly every opponent is different, you just need the experience of fighing different chars and styles.

It's easier to improve if both players talk while they play.
