Goh vs Aoi

Hello, I am really not sure where to post this question. But, here's my problem.

The first VF I really got serious with was VF4 Evo where I first picked up Goh and loved the way he fights. I loved how they brought Judo into a fighting game and I was pretty good with him against my friends. However, when I picked up VF5, I realized that I was not as good as I thought in online play. I was better with Aoi and I used her instead. While I still had a losing record with both characters, Aoi was slightly better.

I picked up VF5 FS this weekend and I immediately started rocking face with Aoi. She moves so well for me with her reversals, guard cancels, throws, and strings. I enjoy the mind games I can play with her. However, I still love playing as Goh as well. I play with OK him online, but it's a lesson in anger management, I can't seem to get him down right. I want to concentrate on 1 character to get better. But if Goh is the "better" character in the long run. And, if Aoi is better for my playstyle (which isn't really defined right now), then I'll pick her.

    tl;dr

Who should I devote more practice time into, Goh or Aoi assuming I enjoy playing with them equally?

    Both, I guess. Alternate.

There will be a moment, where learning all fighters become a must.

    ....besides, Goh rocks [IMG]

    Going by your own statement.

    1 point for Goh

    2 points for Aoi.

    I'd stick with Aoi. [IMG]

Fair enough. I'll stick with Aoi then.

Quick question regarding "cheap" moves. I came back to win from 2 rounds down to a 6th dan Jean player by using the K+P+G reversal followed by a mix of combos. I felt a little cheap for using the same move over and over again, but I decided that if my opponent was good enough, then he would stop falling into my trap. Is that move considered "cheap" to use? In other fighting games, if you throw or use a certain technique too much, you're considered cheap.

Hey, while I've been playing VF5 online for some time, I'm still new to the scene. I'd hate to be seen as a "cheap" player. Scrubby, ok.. I'm still learning, but not cheap.

hahaha but that raises a interesting subject to me, as a kid I only played VF1 and 2 casually, not with the same seriousness as SF2. So in the VF1 and 2 days, were there silly rules and honor systems like seconds or no throws in VF too?

Calling someone cheap is just excuse for "You abuse that over and over and still I can't counter it" so I wouldn't worry about that too much when playing online with random people and/or tournament because you want to win after all, don't you?

However when you play with friends who play occasionally then it's better to hold on with such method, especially when they don't have their own copy of game or even their own console (I have such a few friends).

And from first post it looks like you think that Aoi is worse than Goh. Maybe she doesn't hit so hard but I definitely wouldn't call her worse since you can play both of them [IMG] And having alt character isn't bad idea if you can improve your game constantly (If playing one character it may look like you improve faster but only to some point [IMG] )

Of course it's just my opinion ^^"

Thanks for the answers guys. The way I see it, a move is only cheap if you constantly get abused by it. It's up to the opponent to counter it, if he can. I could just imagine his face as I countered every single hit he tried to throw at me.

I'm going to mix up my game more by using different versions of strings and maybe try to jab-throw out of the K-P-G move.

I'll focus on Aoi and use Goh as a change of pace then.

    Thanks.

There's no point in choosing your character based on who some people think is "better". The tiers seem so thin in this game that you'll probably just lose more playing a character that doesn't fit your personal style. Goh can be a tough character to use cause he's not a very tricky character.

Goh is very straightforward, he's got a bunch of deadly mid attacks and powerful throws. He's very good at the core mixup in VF, the mix between mid and throw. You want to condition them to stand and look to land a throw on them.

His sabakis have been tweaked a little in this version, but in FS I use his sabakis when I think their going to jab (obviously) but also to give them something to think about before they keep trying to abare out of my throw attempts. I haven't figured out how to utilize his throw sabaki yet; the timing is so tight it seems like you just have to get lucky with it. I can barely even pull it off in dojo mode when I KNOW the cpu is going to throw me, so I have no clue how you use it in a match other than just supreme yomi. Although it still works if you were looking for them to throw a punch and did the 4P+K+G input, it still seems to reverse the throw...

I like Aoi because she seems like the kind of character you choose to learn all other characters. From the start, you pay more attention to what the other player is doing, which is possibly why she may be good for beginners (beginners who care more about learning, than winning, I mean). She's like a Swiss Army knife, which is both a blessing and a curse. It's good because you have a greater variety of tools to utilize the more you understand your opponent. The downside is if you don't have a good grip on the opponent's moveset and patterns, you won't be able to respond appropriately, like using the screwdriver tool to open a can. She's not the kind of character who overwhelms the opponent with brute force, as her damage potential is relatively low. But with good 'reading' and reflexes along with effective use of her strings and disorienting arsenal of sabakis, inashis, reversals and cancels, Aoi can prove to be a formidable opponent. She's a rewarding character to learn, but the rewards are not immediate.

Dunno if you've played a lot of fighting games, but there are moves in games that are really just straight up cheap. My go to example is Vega (claw) in super turbo, his wall dives are so cheap it's ridiculous. Granted I play Claw, and will walldive the hell out of anyone. Doesn't mean it's not cheap as hell, and it doesn't mean super turbo isn't a great game.

There really doesn't seem to be anything in this game that can rival the bullshit in other games. For every crazy throw or guard break into ring out, I can show you something like Honda's jab into ochio corner infinite or Sentinel's standing H beam 2 hit unblockable into full life combo or Chun Li's standing RH down parry option select into throw/super etc etc etc.

I lost most matches with Aoi last night when the opponent has a sliver of life left. Those are the most frustrating and I know that if I used a more powerful character, that probably wouldn't have happened that much. But, I'm committed to getting better as long as I don't throw the controller.

Any one on the Xbox want to try to meet up and get some friendly matches in?

But if you would play another character and don't feel it that well like you do with Aoi there big chance enemy would have more life after beating you [IMG] Take it easy and stick to Aoi cause it looks like you really like her and she will be definitely more and more rewarding with time [IMG]

I play Aoi as well, and it's surprising how often lower ranked players will fall into the P+K+G trap before they learn. I can stand there for 4-5 seconds and they'll walk up and do a jab. It's kind of funny.

Yeah, I love doing that. But I've been trying to pull it out last minute or link it into another move.
