The GT5 time trial challenge has been available for download via PSN since late December 09, and the challenge will end on 25 January 2010, but you should check your region for exact details.

So any VFDCers having a crack at this? I'm hopeless at driving games, but thought I'd give this a go just for fun, especially after borrowing my friend's wheel (OMG what a difference, and 100x more fun!)

    Tuned: 1'40.028
    Normal: 2'01.045*
    Total: 3'41.073

*haven't really had a proper go at Normal yet.

Who's got some decent times up?

I've been playing the game. Not much though. The game is very demanding and without a steering wheel you can't really play it properly. And boy those Steering Wheels are expansive >_<... anyways I only tried it few times and only on Tuned settings, it was 1'43. Best time in Japan region is 1'35 by Takeuchi01.

Impossible to play with a Dualshock 3...I've done a 100 laps or so but I cannot steer worth a damn with the controller.

I'm on the edge with this game. On the one hand, Gran Turismo is like the Virtua Fighter of racing series, I played GT3 on the PS3 for hundreds of hours. On the other hand, in order to play the game properly I'd need a steering wheel, an expensive one.

As far as demos go, well it's not really a demo, this is pretty underwhelming. I didn't find the graphics to meet what my expectations are for the GT series (and the PS3's capability). Extremely static backgrounds, aliasing, dull atmosphere. Hopefully the full version, the one with all the tracks, damage on the cars, and the NASCAR license, lives up to the hype. But the visuals are very lacking and I would hope that they don't reflect the final product.

The worst part of the demo is the DRM style lock on the game requiring an internet connection. If the full game requires an internet connection you can count me out immediately. I don't understand why games like GT would require an internet connection. Sure if you're playing Metal Gear ONLINE or Battlefield 1943 then you might need an internet connection. But Gran Turismo?

    Imagine if VF5 required your X-Box to always be online. -_-;;

I think you've missed the point entirely.

This is not meant to be a demo of the final game nor indicative of the final quality. Yes, on the surface it's lacking to what you'll find in GT5 Prologue, but it's a showcase of the updated physics as well as being an online competition. Unless you're really into driving games, then the updated physics will be lost on you (as they are on me), but I'm nonetheless enjoying this tremendously for what it is -- a time-limited test of skill.

And agreed that pads are useless for driving games.

Anyway, more details in the link.

racing games (sims and arcade racers alike) were my genre before i moved full time into fighting games.

a friend of mine is among the best gt4 players in the country and i've been dabbling in forza 3 a bit lately so i've regained something of an interest in the genre (seeing as fighting games are starting to go backwards in many ways, but then again so are arcade racers).

that being said, i think pads are absolutely acceptable for racing sims. unless you're using a logitech g25/27 (or in the case of an arcade racer, playing on a cab), there's absolutely no benefit to using a low end wheel whatsoever (if anything, it'll hinder your performance) over a dualshock 2. if you want to take me up on this, feel free to challenge me to any time trial in gt4 or forza 3. i'll provide pictures, hell, even video of me doing the time while playing on a pad.

now that that's out of the way, gt5 prolouge is great and it may just be what it'll take for me to get a ps3. i've always liked the gt games a lot and i don't see that changing any time soon, though forza 3 if you ask me has set the bar very high for gt5, and i can only hope it manages to best it.

anyone on vfdc up for some forza 3 sometime? plague, i've seen you on it from time to time, we could race sometime if you'd like.
