Has anyone gotten good @ SC4?

Have any of you guys gotten good @ SC4 yet? I've only played about 10-15 matches online, and I keep getting my ass handed to me by people that are obviously button mashing.
At this point I'm not sure if it's just because I'm in-experienced, or thats just "how it goes" with SC 4.
With VF5, I am 100% confident that I will beat a player if they are button mashing or spamming---regardless of what character they pick. (well unless there is a LARGE amount of lag)
I guess I'm just asking if that same feeling comes with SC4 with enough practice.
Also, if anyone has any helpful links, please post.
    THANKS

Dude, you will definitely be able to destroy mashers once you get your bearings... You can mash some in SC4 but it won't get you past me /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif ...

I was wondering the same thing when I first started playing but I figured it out pretty quick... I beat the crap out of mashers now.

A lot of time they will mash B because it generally has more powerful attacks. However, most B attacks can be side-stepped and punished. If you side-step a vertical attack, launch them and nail them with your favorite juggle combo.

Mashing will definitely only get you so far. Once you get used to the game, you will be killing mashers left and right. Just remember when you're at a frame advantage or disadvantage and act accordingly. One thing button mashers don't care about is attacking from a disadvantage, kill them for it.

Button mashers can be easily exposed on SC4. You have to just know you're characters moveset. It doesn't matter who you play with but they should have a move that offsets what your opponent is doing, and if they're repeating the same move over and over it's up to you to make that adjustment.

My advice would be to know what your fighter's fastest move is. This will help you break up a masher in between his combo.

Learn to side step verticle moves and you'll be fine. Duck the horizontal moves and figure out which rising move is the best to attack with. Oh and I would recommend practicing the defensive reversal move which everybody can do in the game. If you get that down, you'll prolly get an easy grab everytime because mashers don't really know what to do when their move gets reversed.

Also, know when to tech roll and when to get up fast and block. It's a lot to think about but once you get an understanding you'll see how easy some of the mashing can be avoided.

It's not so bad. We lost VFs command training, which really sucks... but I think any game except VF has every included that mode.

And, as has been pointed out in other threads, we did get the option to save inputs for the CPU, so actually doing training with the training mode is much better.

The training mode also has the great feature where you can make the CPU do a series of attacks... It's great because it let's you figure out which move to counter with when you block some of their most-often-used strings.

I set the CPU to AA and then BB, or vice versa, and see which of my guy's attacks are fast enough to slip in between that VERY popular series of strings.

Then from there I can see what moves I can fit in my advantage after my counter string before they can mash AA again which is a very common situation.

You can figure out exactly what they can and can't mash out of with AA, 2A, BB, 2B, K or 3K and get your masher-killer flow down pat. I like that feature a lot, lot, LOT about SC4's training mode.

Alright, I guess I need more practice then. I'm not gonna make SC4 my main fighter or anything, but shit, I would at least like to say with 100% certainty that if you have never played SC4, you won't beat me!

Wrong depending on what character your using. "I just brought this game today and i can't stand this shit. I spent the whole day practicing and learning the new moves and whatsnot only to go online and get my ass handed to me. I was always good in Soul Calibur but now when i play this shiti feel like a fucking noob.

My Maxi Got Nerfed,Neautered, ETC to the point where without his crazy mix ups he don't stand a chance. All his moves have a huge gaps between that he can 90% of the time get poked out of. The games is always laggy and even if you get a good connection you can most definitely still feel the heavyness to the characters. Friend lives right down the bock at the connection still sucks.
VF5 Online is better than this (Let me mention the Online mode.). Back on topic i think Ranked matches don't mean shit in this game because this game is too user friendly. Even when your playing against button mashers the only way to beat them is to guard try to punish. Throwing is out of the question because unlike VF clash system you will get hit on a throw attempt then release the opponent(stupid). Siegfried is the man. He retains everything and gets most of his Stances moves extended for more hits without losing anything at all.

IF anybody wants to battle sometime just hit me up i'll painfully oblige.

Not the kind whiny post I expected from you Overfiend... So what you're not an expert the first day you get the game. It would be a simple, shitty game if you were.

There's more depth there that you're not seeing if you're getting "you ass handed to you." If you feel like a noob the first day you got the game it's cause you are. Who's not a noob the first time they go online, was VF5 any different?

Everybody gets a few beat-downs their first few games online, that's totally normal and a good thing. What good fighting game is there where the dude that's never played before can beat a good and experienced player???

Your whole post is backwards. What if some dude bought VF5 and beat the shit out of you the first time he ever logged on??? That wouldn't happen which is one of the things that's good about VF5, you can mash like a noob and win. SC4 is the same.

You're probably just mashing with Maxi (who is the best mashing character BTW) so you're losing. You certainly WILL get the hang of it quicker than others players out there, with less fighting game experience than us VFDC-ers, and start dealing out more than a few beatings of your own sooner than later.

Give it chance holmes... Otherwise you're wasting your chance to play a good, next-gen fighter.

    Overfiend:
Contrary to what you're saying, throws are actually useful against beginners, all throws in Namco games have catch throw properties (ie you can grab an opponent during the startup of his attack animation). Try to throw a beginner in VF and you'll get a smack in your face (and possibly a clash) instead.

I lost 17 out of 20 games my first evening, I played SC2 almost to death, I'd have thought I would be able to manage something. Like me, I think, you need to reset your way of going about the game and start totally afresh. A lot of subtle things got changed, previous best strats don't work anymore, new ones need to be found, for some characters this will be harder than for others.

  17. If your referring to his switch from SC3 to SC4, then so did everyone else. Hes not terrible though. Hes just a different beast from previous iterations of the game. If your not using his stance game appropriately then yeah, your gonna get your ass handed to you.

Its cool to see part of the VF community getting into SC. Id love to play some of you guys. Shitty lag is a guarantee! :p

I have the XBOX 360 version and it's not laggy at all... 90% of my games have been on really good connections. I have to say, XBOX live rules. It's the best online console platform/network that's out right now...

If you get a blue icon (nice, fast connection,) there's really no lag at all...

  19. Was meant facetiously, but since you bring it up, that connection indicator dosent seem to tell the truth all the time. Ive had some bad 5 and 4 bar games. Not super common, but enough to annoy.
