What happens when everyone's favorite power metal band Hammerfall makes a video to cheer on the Sweedish womens curling team in the February Olympics?

"With heavy metal as a source of strength, the girls can now focus on bringing home the gold.", guitarist Oscar Dronjak said in an official statement issued on the band's website...

A couple of observations about that...

    1. It looks very odd to see a music video where every woman is not a 9 or a 10.

    2. That is the oddest sport I have ever seen.

    3. I really hate that song.

The song was ok, the sport though seemed..."different."

Those Hammerfall dudes are not not fit to play within 1,000 miles of the Swedish metal band The Refused.

At first I thought the video was camp gone wrong, but now I am not so sure. I am bewildered. What does it all mean?

    Punk vs. Metal

It is true that they may call themselves a punk band, but their sound is much closer to metal.

Their worldview is punkish but their guitar licks are more metally. Like the first song on The Shape of Punk to Come where the singer screams "I've got a bone to pick with capitalism...and a few to break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" That is a more punk rock sentiment, but the guitars are then strummed in a most macho, bombastic, metally fashion. The Refused are one of the few metally bands I like. But they are too earnest to be a punk band in my opinion.

This is coming from a guy who vastly prefers punk to metal, generally speaking. And by punk I mean like the Dead Kennedys, The Circle Jerks, the Dead Boys, The Queers etc. not shit like Good Charlotte.

Good Charlotte is to punk what Bon Jovi is to metal.

And has anyone ever heard that "He was a skater boy....She said see-you later boy" song? Oh my god. That is the most trite, sacharin shit I've ever heard.

    Re: Punk vs. Metal

Only punk band i like is Propagandhi, and they are kinda like...alterative rock/punk. Oh and Municipal Waste but they are close to old school thrash.

The closest Refused would be to metal is Harcdore.

Propagandhi was a lot better before that wussy guy left to create The Weakerthans. Now Propagandhi has no melody or sense of humor and The Weakerthans are plagued by the effeminate vocals of the ex-Propagandhi guy. /versus/images/graemlins/tear.gif

    The Swedes Take it All!

    Congrats!

    [ QUOTE ]
The Swedish fans, some wearing flags as ponchos and foam curling rocks as hats, chanted across the building and sang the chorus from "Hearts on Fire,'' the heavy metal song their team appeared in a video for as part of their Olympic preparation.
