Erm... soccer that is.

I'm catching the replay of Barcelona vs Sevilla on GOL TV right now... Sevilla's road kit is PINK!!! It's almost as bad as what the Philly Eagles wore yesterday, but I doubt anything will ever be worse than those uni's.

Barce getting Thierry Henry is like the Patriots getting Randy Moss IMO. Do they really need more offense? Well it looks like Ronaldinho is injured, Eto'o is still out, so maybe they do.

My new favorite soccer player's name has to be Barce's Toure Yaya. I can't believe I missed that name at last year's world cup.

I'm really more a fan of the EPL... mainly Liverpool currently. Where do think Jose Morinho will end up? Spain? Italy? At another English squad? Who in England would have the money to pay him? Newcastle just hired Big Sam... Man City just got Sven... The other big english clubs that have money to burn are happy with their managers AFAIK.

What a juicy post, so many things to reply to! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Henry doesn't appear to have settled into Barcelona yet, but that's to be expected from anyone transitioning into a new league.

Chelsea looked a shell of their former self in their recent game against Man U. But, I can't say that I feel too sorry for them! I've always thought they played ugly football, never pretty to watch, and usually managed their wins through brute force. No doubt Mourinho will be missed there, and I have no idea where he'll go next. Australia's looking for a new national coach to lead the next world cup campaign though.. I may send him a PM or something /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

I mainly follow the EPL too, and I'm an Arsenal fan! Gunners all the way! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

The only sports jerseys I own are Arsenal and Man Utd. =)

I think that Chelsea's brute force style of play is why Jose is gone. He coached to win at any cost, screw playing with style. An ugly win is still a win. (This is why I usually loathe watching the Italian League. If there's anything such as machi soccer, they play it in Italy.) Roman Ibronovich (sp?) is more interested in having a fun toy to play with IMO. I don't think he's just interested in winning. He wants to be entertained. I think he aspires to having a team more like Arsenal or Barcelona. The EPL could only get better than IMO.

BTW, I really liked Chelsea during the Gian-Franco Zola days. He's one of my favorites. Think italian El Blaze, if you don't know who he is... /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

The EPL looks to be a good race this year with some of the favorites taking early losses. I look forward to seeing the young players at Liverpool and Arsenal develop. I think Babbel at Liverpool is going to be something special, and Fabregas and van Persie at Arsenal have already showed what they're capable of.

Oh, kbcat once told me he's a Gunners fan too, back when they had the Sega/Dreamcast sponsorship =) I should have bought one of those jerseys when I had the chance back then... heh.

Rumors of Ronaldinho going to Chelsea... I wasn't far off. Heh.

I saw him play his very first game for Barca at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro vs. Juventus in the 2003 preseason. I think he could flourish in the EPL.

This guy named Kerlon does the seal dribble. It seems that half of the people say that's "hotdogging/show boating". Other half of the people say it's entertaining and talent.

I am not a soccer diehard, but I thought it was entertaining. Obviously some of the other opponents don't like it. Is that considered cheating or unsportsmanlike?

This is not considered cheating. It's only for show and pretty useless as you can see in the clip. The coach should yell at him for this shit, and probably does.

And the sport is called football.

Most people use "futbol" in america because a lot of the games are available on spanish (and portuguese where I live) stations... soccer is futbol in espanol > so soccer is futbol in america AFAIC.

Tarjeta Amarilla for GLC!

I don't youtube... modern PC challenged...
Is the seal dribble bouncing the ball on his head as he runs down the pitch? No that's not cheating. I believe Robinho did that in a Real Madrid Champions League game last year for about 20 yards... only time I've seen it in actual game play... normally it's just urban freestyler bollox.

edit: Suxor--- USA lost to Brazil at the women's world cup this morning... women's world cup ends up the same as the men's often does... Germany vs. Brazil. Should be a good final. These women have skills. Marta == Ronaldinho. I can't watch more than 2 mins of professional women's basketball, but this high level of women's soccer is entertaining.

I refuse to call a game where you carry the ball in your hands "football".

How about the commonly accepted "eggball"?

The ball is kicked in American football GLC. At the begining of the game, on a punt return, and for points (either by itself for 3 points or after a touchdown for 1 point).

The goalkeeper in real football can also use his hands and no one's calling it "handball" just because of that.

So why is everyone taunting that guy for doing the seal dribble? All you have to do is stand in front of him and he runs into you.

Back in the days when England invented all forms of football, they decided not to really make a big distinction between them to way later on.

"Football" was a generic term used in old England to distinguish peasant games from noblemen games that involved using the horse. Both Association Football and Rugby Football (the grand daddy of American Football) were lumped up into this pile. This remained so even after feudal ages and when the sports where brought over to other countries.

As a result, when Rugby was introduced to the USA through Canadians (who had gotten it from England), it was called "Football" Rugby. Seeing as it was more popular than Association Football in the USA, Americans shortened it from Football Rugby to just "Football". Later on, thanks to American coaches it evolved into the sport it is today that is very different from Rugby. It gained the named American Football outside of the USA to distinguish it, and Gridiron in Austrailia and New Zealand.

It's really an issue of history and culture.

Interesting stuff.

2 other sports I like are Irish football and hurling. They both have very similar rules to Australian Football. If you kick the ball or slap the ball forward with your stick, and someone catches it, the catching player gets a free kick or whack. Hurling is insane. It's like lacrosse with hockey sticks and *NO* helmets. Who's idea was it to give every player a weapon in a contact sport.
