How do you execute a guarding throw escape?

    Hello everybody!

I revised the VF4 Evo training mode a week ago and I re-learnt the "guarding throw escape" thing: press /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gifand then hold /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif after a guarded or missed attack and whether your opponent throws or attacks with a high/mid attack, you'll be fine.

Now, I can't get this for shit in VF5. I went in free training mode and set the reaction to "the opponent will guard and then go for a throw or a mid attack". I could escape the throw 90% of the time, but the mid attacks would always get me. I wasn't using a move that would give my opponent big advantage, in fact I could guard his attack if I was simply guarding (but I would be thrown in cas eof a throw).

    What am I doing wrong?

I found this to be true for me also. I can only get it off for an evading throw escape guard. I assumed I wasn't getting off P fast enough for the regular throw escape guard.

I need to re-learn these too, I got used to them in EVO but I can't seem to do them now. I haven't tried much though...

That's exactly what you're doing wrong -- you're not using a move that gives the opponent enough advantage.

Generally, you should only be using Throw Escape Guard (TEG) techniques when the throw is guaranteed (-12 or worse). Since you're not at a big enough disadvantage, chances are you're not holding /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif the very frame you recover, and hence your Throw Escape input is actually coming out as a Throw Attempt, whiffing against an attack and causing you to get hit.

Technically, it is possible to TEG at lower disadvantages, but it gets more difficult as the disadvantage gets smaller. The only requirement to it working is that you've buffered/completed the TE input during disadvantage, and are holding /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif the very frame you recover from disadvantage.

The idea is that if they throw you, then hopefully your throw escape will save you. But if they anticipate you dodging, they may go for a slightly bigger move (i.e. slower) move to hit you out of the dodge, such as a full or half circular attack, or a slightly delayed attack. In this case, since you recover Guarding, you should be safe against the attacking options as well.

Sounds like a problem with timing. After you have inputed the throwescape all you need to do is to keep your finger on guard and release P and stick.

One problem may be that you are doing a move thats not giving enough disadvantage to you, messing up the timing. If you have too little disadvantage, you need to input G within the recovery of the move or a throw will come out (which will be interrupted by CPU attack, so you need to be very fast. When you are in more of a disadvantage, you have slightly more leeway.

Try instead hitting cpu block with something that has larger disadvantage, -7 or worse.

    edit: slow! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Is it possible to buffer multiple throw escapes in? In EVO I only ever used /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif, I'm guessing it's not possible to get other throw escape commands in there?

Yes it is possible, but better get it working with one and then move to more TEs.

Only thing to consider that you need to be conscious about the disadvantage you are in, or messing up the inputs might mean a whiffed throw animation to come out which would be disastrous.

If you do a evade-multiple throwescapes-guard and are too slow, you will get an evade first which is slightly less dangerous if opponent does an attack instead of throw. You also have time until the end of evade animation to press guard.

Where as with multiple-throwescapes-guard being too slow might mean getting counterhit launcher to the face (counterhit due to whiffed throw animation). /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Thanks Manjimaru, i'll have to practice them in Dojo for a while. I find hard to guess if my opponent is gonna go for a throw or just hit back after blocking a big move, so these would help me out a lot.
