I've seen alot of threads dedicated to discussing Aoi's name, but never one for Pai. I always thought it was pronounced Pie, rhymes with eye, but after watching crouching tiger, I'm wondering if it's pronounced pay. Anyone know for sure? And is this a common chinese name?

That's why the Kumite (and maybe some Quest) had names like:

    Apple Pai
    PaiNapple
    Pai=3.1459

    or for Aoi:

    Owwie
    Owwie Aoi
    - - -
Sega's so clever that way /versus/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

It's "Chen Pei(pay)" in mandarine. "Pei" is a pretty nice and unique name for a chinese girl. But perhaps in cantonese it's read "Chan Pai(pie)". I'm not sure though since I don't know any cantonese.

Nope, it's ka (k like c in can, a like the first part of "I" a-i) -ge ( g like g in "golf" and e like the first e in "enter")
Both syllables of same lenght and pitch.

actually ive never seen pai or laus names written in chinese. are there chinese characters for their names or are you just guessing?

I guess sega-am2 never officially put Pai and Lau and Lei's names in kanji /versus/images/graemlins/crazy.gif. Weird though they have Shun's name in kanji on their website. However, their chinese names written in kanji, e.g. Chen Pei(pay), are well recognized among chinese VF players, I think japanese players can recognize those names written in kanji, too.
And believe me in mainland China no body call themselves "Pai(pie)" or "Lau", so I think these are cantonese ways of reading their names. In mandarin "Pei(pay)" is a nice name for girls.
Anyways I think this issue is not that important for those who can't read kanji, read them in what ever way you like and enjoy the game /versus/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I actully new a guy from HK with the last name Lau... that was the closest I've heard.

I think there are kanji's for Pai and Lau (somewhere) although I can't recall where I've seen them. What about the VerC character screens after you put your credit in? Maybe not... it's been a while.

like what LiMeng had said, its pronounced as "Pay" in Chinese, end of discussion.

I'm not clear on how it's "end of discussion" when he referred to two appropriate chinese pronunciations:
    1. cantonese: Pai (Pie)
    2. mandarin: Pai (Pay)

Imo, both are correct. Traditionally, mind you, Pai has been pronounced in North American VF circles as Pie since VF1.
