How's this for a tournament...

Some guys that I've played with all ordered shirts, and we had a pretty big turn out in a get together. 20 or so people.

To spice things up a bit, we tried something new.

Everyone in the tournament throws in one of their cards. You draw numbers to see who plays against who. Each player reaches into the grab bag and grabs a card. It's a single-elimination tournament, but the cards go back into the bag.

Like a dipshit, I put in my Mosa-ranked Shun. And of course, my friend who uses Wolf and Goh, pulled out my Shun, to play against a Mosa-ranked Aoi. The guy using Aoi didn't know her for dick either, but she's got some easy stuff to fall back on, whereas Shun for the first time w/ no movelist (or time to look at it) can be a nightmare.

It got into the 5th round, and he lost (doh). I got up, and pulled out an Aoi card and played against a Lau... someone that couldn't Lau his way out of a paper back. I raped him. Next match, I got a Wolf (whom I've never used) and got my ass handed to me.

All in all, it was fun. I was able to play a Mosa-ranked Lau after the tournament w/ my Shun and get back two points, so I guess it was all right.

So basically for this tournament all the contestants just chose random characters?

This sounds interesting actually, however, I wouldn't want to go to a tournament based solely on this system of random draw.

This might, however, be a fun side competition with goofy/fun prizes to lighten up a particulary intense tournament.

Sounds interesting to me, shows who has the best grasp of VF overall between a group of people, and gives others a chance to experience other characters (different from the ones they usually use).

Yeah, overall it was really fun. The guys that got into the finals are the ones that can generally use most of the characters. I think the 2nd or 3rd place guy could use all but 3 pretty well, and drew one he didn't know at all (Lion).

Since everyone in the tournament were at least acquantainces, it was more for shits and grins than anything. The winner was a high school student, who kicks most peoples asses most of the time.
