I hate Quest Mode.

Quest mode used to be my greatest friend. We would sit side by side for hours and fight each other. We'd laugh and talk trash. Those were the old days...before XBOX Live. I used to think that Quest Mode was a good way of gauging myself for real life battles. Then VF5 Online comes out and I realize just how simple my old friend really is. I'll play online and I do "ok". I'm 6th Dan and have a 70% win ratio. But then I take a few hours to play Quest Mode and have to use totally ridiculous strategies to win over and over. Afterwards, it's time to get back online and I have to take a few matches to get my bearings back. I lost to two scrubs in a row because I was stuck in the "anti-AI" mode. Needless to say, me and Quest Mode aren't friends anymore.

Try playing it on expert and try to fight like you would against a real opponent. If you do that you can use quests ai to your advantage. With a game like vf, it would take years to program an AI that can beat all the simple patterns possible.

I've always played it on expert, but the problem I have, is that I use mix ups and mind games when I play humans. I'll start a pattern that I intentioanlly telegraph and then I mix it up with throws and launchers. The AI laughs at me when I do that and I end up resorting to BS. I guess the other problem is that there are so many different AIs that play differently. Some are pretty realistic, but others are just brutal and I have to get cheap with them. In the end, I just speed through it to get back to Live. Maybe I am selling myself short and just need to play em like I play humans. We'll see. Maybe I can make up with my "old friend".

I try to play quest like I would play humans but obviously some stuff doesnt work since the CPU just doesnt have any fear. Nevertheless its good for training reactions to certain moves and setups.

Good point. I guess all I needed was some LAcounseling to fix my relationship with Quest Mode. I'll give it another chance.

if you could unlock money and items in ranked matches online i'd NEVER go near the dull grind that is quest mode.

as it stands it's the only means of unlocking cool clobber for your fighter.

I definitely agree with that though. I wouldn't touch Quest mode if I could get items for online matches. On the same note, I do prefer having a lag free match, to having tons of features in a laggy match. I'd give my disc to the baby if this game lagged online.

The lag on this game is really good. I'm very impressed with how fast it runs. The lag is rare and seems to pop up in fairly unimportant situations and not last long. I've played over 300 times and have only had 1 or 2 really laggy matches. Way to go SEGA!

I actually enjoy Quest mode set on Expert mode.

The individual AI actually have some unique styles which I find challenging to fight against.

But yeah, you have to approach fighting AI and real people somewhat differently.

How do the best AI characters compare to EVO's AI?

I have the Quest mode set to hard. I just cannot abide losing since I only play Quest mode to get items and rank. Losing in an item tournament is NOT COOL.

And I don't suck. I am 9th Dan online so I may suck in Japan but here I am alright. I think that the harder the AI is the lamer my tactics must become to defeat it (back dash, attack whiffed attack, low punch throw, punch throw as my only offense).

As far as I can tell, it's more of the same ol' same ol'. There are some that are "invincible" and some that are dumb as a box of rocks. Same thing as VF4Evo in my opinion.

Did the AI in VF5 Quest Mode learn how to break low throws? Can it struggle out of non-guaranteed down attacks more consistently?

High ranked AI sometimes does actually.

I'm like a 7th or 8th dan and quest mode and thought i was good (that was tough for me in VF4 Evo). I go online and im like 2-40 :-( im so bad.

THough online feels laggy to me.. I can't seem to reverse anything.. and it seems like i just have to mash my inputs and ignore what the opponent is doing.. Rather than waiting for them and reacting..

I've got a good connection but i always join as 2p maybe thats why?

Oh, yeah. The ESRB put that disclaimer out that says "Game play experience may change during online play." That refers to the @ss pounding you'll get if you fight the same online as you do in quest mode.

I will say that maybe "hate" is a strong word for it, but it doesn't do squat for preparing you for the real deal. Just find some people and have fun in the player matches if you're new.

Quest mode does just about nothing as far as training you for a human opponent. You can't practice your Yomi on a CPU opponent because they don't react like a real person. A real person learns what you might do and compensates so you can "train" them to attack and defend when and how you want. The CPU has no fear of retribution so it just does what it does. If you punish a person for doing something, chances are, they won't do it again. That allows you to predict what they might do (Yomi)... You can spam moves on the CPU and they won't adapt, that is very un-humanlike (not a word, I know)... That's why you might be good against the computer and human will just crush those same tactics in vs match.

    Not totally useless.

Practice your Fuzzy Wuzzy. Dodge attacks and then throw out attacks or throws. Quest can help with the timing. Also, Use throw-counterable-on-block moves and when the AI inevitably blocks the attack, practice your throw escapes, and/or your ETTE or ETEG bullshit.

The cpu is a genius fuzzy blocker with no common sense- an idiot savant - or Magitard as I like to call it.

I second what DissMaster mentions. Also, they have started to use some of their newer moves and offensive moves, at least /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif And Jeffry did a nasty bounce combo to me haha. Then he just stood there the rest of the round /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

Quest is not totally useless but it does not compare to fighting good human opponents. One of the problems with quest is that CPU is very hard when you play "right", but there may exist some lame tactic that CPU eats because its CPU.
