Anyone else got one of these wee beauties? I ordered one over ebay and am chuffed to bits with it.

It's tiny....just a fraction bigger than my Sony Erricson mobile phone, yet holds 4gig of music. My music collection only comes to 2.4 gig (mainly continuous DJ mixes with 30 or so misc CDs) so the storage space is fine.

More inportantly it looks the part. Never liked the pure white look of the ipod, but this has got a lovely stainless steel cover and feels really solid.

I was tempted to by one of those but then i looks at the pathetic storage capacity and bought the beautiful ipod instead .

Well it's not pathetic if, like me, you have a relatively slim music collection and only tend to listen to more recent purchases.

Anyway, for me it boiled down to the choice between carrying about something shiny and pocket-sized or a white rubber brick. /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif No offense to standard ipod owners, just my personal taste.

I guess you based your opnion and looks rather then technical specifacations, as for the ipod being a white rubber brick thats laughable.

p.s What happens when your collection gets over 4 gig?

How much it set you back man?

still toying with the idea of getting an iPod. I'm not getting one til I'm 100% sure I actually want one.

Just a quick question on the mini models though, hows the battery life, and hows the volume?

I heard some of the iPod's had issues in that respect.

Well I won the ebay bid at £160 but tax and postage brought it up to the £190 mark. Not bad but still quite a few bob more than they'll cost in the UK. Mind you, I prefer having a US model as they don't apply EU volume restrictions to the units. I like to listen to my music LOUD /versus/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Battery life is about 8 hours. Not great but adequate I suppose.

I'd recommend one Stroppa. It's fantastic having your entire music collection in one convenient place (no more messing about with CDs and fantastic when you're out-and-about). If you've got over 70 albums (mini's max capacity) I'd go with archangel and get a standard ipod which can hold allot more. Otherwsie the mini just looks and feels much nicer, imo. It's also got a more streamlined interface with all functions under the scroll wheel. No mp3 player can touch the ipod's interface and control design, it's brilliant.

Archangel, I still have about 1.7 gig left. If I do end up going over this (which I doubt) then itune's intelligent synching will kick-in and download my most played/rated songs.

I have a 10GB iPod that is one year old and it works great! If you think you will regret it later on; I'll go ahead and tell you that you won't. The "iPod mini" and "iPod" are well worth it (just make sure you get the one that fits your music collection's size).

    *dumb post*

If I get a US one, can I ask how you go about charging the thing?

You can get adapters directly from apple for the different voltage specs for europe. More specifically, the charger "head" can be changed for different regions.

All the apple chargers work on US and UK mains voltage (100 - 240v range), so you don't need step-downs of shit like that. One cool thing about the mini is it charges and synchs with iTunes via your USB or Firewire port so the mains charger is redundant unless you're taking a trip somewhere.

There is a hack for iPods from the European Union to get around the decibel limit that they enforce. Check ipodlounge.com for more info.

I got a 40gig ipod and I love it. My music collection of ~140 cds and lotsa downloaded stuff comes in a a little more than 20 gigs now. Ilike putting it on shuffle and getting random songs out of the 3600+ songs I got on there.

Why would I want to record with it?

When it comes to technology you're going to be carrying about all the time, image does matter. As does the robustness, interface and feel of the device.

Also, my mini does everything I want it to. I'm no fan of devices crammed with redundant features that generally serve to overcomplicate the navigation and functionality of the device.

My only reservation with the mini was when I first got it and the battery only lasted 5 hours. However, now I've discovered the units needs to be broken-in and after a week my mini is now exceeding Apple's 8 hour claim. I now get about 10 hours on one charge. /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Eh, I still see NOTHING that Ipod has over my creative nomad III.

If you're happy with your Nomad 3, great. I said nothing against other players, just that I personally think asthetics and compactness are important. It wasn't my intention to start a mp3 player war with this thread.

Listen you fucking overgrown jew on two ears, if you don't see what the ipod mini has over your gaytive nomad then you are a fucking moron. complaining about it on the internet isn't gonna help. Here's a hint go take a class on style. Driving a Kia SUV can get you to the same place as a BMW SUV, but is it the same experience?
anyways, iPod mini is the way to go if money isn't an issue. The add-ons are also pricey if you buy them from the apple store. but everything works great.

I never really used an ipod for an extended period of time (other than messing with one in the stores), but I thought it was better than the other mp3 players that were out at the time.

However, just today I bought a Rio Karma (20GB). I'm still waiting for it to finish charging before I can take it out and around, but IMO it has more features than the ipod. It's more squarish rather than ipod's "cigarette pack" retangular form factor. Dunno which I'd like better though.

Anyway, I'm not arguing about if ipod is better/worse, but just throwing out that the Rio Karma looks to be a pretty good ipod alternative.

The primary reasons I bought it was the various music formats it supports out the box (mp3, wmv, ogg, flac) plus the connectivity features: usb2.0 (i'd rather have firewire), and ethernet. The ethernet is only available on the cradle though.

Usability will be put to the test when I go to Tokyo.

The Rio Karma is supposed to be a great player. It, along with ipod, got top marks in a T3 round-up of portable music players (if that's anything to go on).

It's fair to say the ipod is quite thin on extra features compared to other models but to be honest I like my gadgets to be more user friendly than functionally advanced. I couldn't care less which extra codecs my ipod supports because I mainly use mp3 and Apples own AAC format.

With my iPod I can just connect it and let iTunes do all the work for me. No dragging files into directories and pissing about converting to different formats. When I buy a new CD iTunes automatically imports it into my library and my mini picks it up next time I charge.

Ok you migrant worker, lets do analogies...go pull the chord to start your boxcar, then get into a fully equiped sedan...see which one you enjoy better. ..now, lets review...the ipod is like the great girl, but after you drive it a few times, it breaks and you can't replace it (battery life) and then you also realize it really can't be tought that many things (limited file type support). Now, if all you listen to are .mp3 and apple's gay audio format, then its fine.
