Is struggling too early detrimental to early recovery?

I was going through the recovery training against Lau's stumble throw yesterday and and soon as Lau pulled off the throw on me I struggled as quickly as I could but more often than not I got nailed by his [4][6][P] followup. However my chances of an early recovery were considerably higher if I were to begin struggling only when the joystick signal appeared on the screen. So, does anyone know if struggling too early is actually bad for you, or am I the only one experiencing this?

Hey Wyrd, I think that struggling is only useful when the joystick icon appears (i.e. the window where the computer takes your input as struggling). Thus if you struggle before the icon appears, it doesn't count and you'd just be wasting energy.

BTW, in Evolution you should be able to struggle to block Lau's [4][6][P]easily from ST every time. That's not the case in Version C.

To answer the question in a broader sense, there are times when not recoverying will save you.

SOme people are throw-happy, and there are some combos that will stagger on MC, which is great when they mean to follow threw, but when they want to do the first strike, then throw, and you're struggling... guess what. /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Lei Fei's [3][3][P]->Throw comes to mind. If the [P] is an MC, you'll have to struggle, and he won't be able to throw unless he waits.

Also, check out my Anti-Lei Fei thing thread. The cases are few and far between, but there are some.

And you SHOULD be able to struggle out of that throw of Lau's. Start buffering your struggle...that might help.

Yap, and in Version C this was a tactic you can use to throw Lau off on the ST. If you struggle and if Lau does the [4][6][P] right away, you will be hit. But if you don't struggle and if Lau does the [4][6][P] right away, the single palm will whiff; Lau would have to delay the single palm to hit. The implication is that if you struggle and if Lau delays the [4][6][P] in anticipation of you not struggling, then it's possible to block the single palm.

Thankfully this guessing game is no longer necessary since you can always struggle to block the single palm from ST.

By the way, how do you recover from the struggle. My friend just presses random buttons but that doesnt seem to help. What do you do?

The best way to struggle is this:
Hold [G] to avoid whiffing any moves.Shake the joystick like [4][7][8][9][6] ( not down so you don't crouch...can still get hit by any mids if you end crouching) and tap [P] [K] alternately to struggle quickly. If you do this against lau in the advanced session being talked about its not too hard to do 5 times in a row.

I’ve been testing the Lau struggle now for the past 60 minutes, and FUCK!
5 times I managed to make 4 out of 5 struggles and then just ending up failing on the last one, anyway it seems to me that timing is EVERYTHING on this challenge.

If you can time the “shaking†correctly it seems that you don’t have to shake the stick like a madman to make it work.
Every time I managed to do it, I almost didn’t move the stick at all.

    It’s essential that:

1: When you see the stick window appear, wait a couple of frames before you start shaking the stick.

2: At the same time that you start shaking the stick hold down the G button and start to punch in P and K alternately just like “csnape†said earlier in his post.

When I did this correctly I almost didn’t have to struggle at all, and could do 4 struggles straight after each other without almost any effort.
But then soon after I missed the timing of the stick window and then I couldn’t struggle at all.

When the timing isn’t right, this challenge soon turns out to be a real work out, you just sit there and shake the stick and punch the buttons without any results.

    Phew! /versus/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Man oh man the times i've had 4 in a row and them blown it!Especially against Lau and against Akiras ST throw to sgpm for some reason. The [P][K] think does help I think but i'll try and hardly shake the stick and see what happens.

The thing is you've got to wait till the stick animation becomes red, when it's green your struggle isn't taken into account.
That's why u felt that sometimes u don't need to struggle a lot, in fact u've got to be very fast during a very small window.
Japaneese players usualy do 360 or even 720 +[P]+[K] mashing when they struggle.
