Japanese

Hey all!

I am just curious how many people on this board are learning or have some interest in learning Japanese. I for one have made many attempts at trying to learn the language. But have failed at each attempt. Well, I am making another attempt at it. I didn't have the resources I have now back then, so my attempt at learning this time is going quite well. I get assistance from tons of my Japanese friends. I even get help from that wanna be Japanese guy named SHOU /versus/images/graemlins/grin.gif! But seriously, Shou is perfect example of what it takes to learn the language. Everything he knows he learned on his own.

What I am getting at with this post is. I wanted to know how many people would be interested in getting together and trying to learn some Japanese. Think how wonderful it would be to translate all those strategy books you own. I know I own tons of them that date back to the beggining of VF3. Imaging if sega does another live broadcast tournament and you are able to follow just a little bit of all the extras like the trivia contest from OTE3. All these things are possible with just a little effort and time.

If anyone is interested please post here and let me know. I know 99% of us live miles and miles apart. So, of course getting together will be through the use of the internet. Speaking of the internet, I reccomend for anyone who is interested, that we use MSN messenger. It's so good for this type of thing. Also there are tons of Japanese / English chat rooms on MSN messenger. I was even lucky to find one with a great Japanese guy who is actually studing to be a teacher. We usually chat during the early morning, because of 14 hour time difference. He has helped my Japanese in many ways and does not mind helping anyone else. He even has his own chat room. There are not many members, because it is fairly new. But I suggest joining if you are interested. I also decided to get my own in case anyone feels uncomfortable roaming around in foreign territory. I think you need a MSN screen name to join it though. /versus/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I'm goin to be picking up my Japanese studies again once I get my italian in order. I'm almost to that point though and I'd say before the end of february, I'll be in the Japanese books again ( /versus/images/graemlins/grin.gif and /versus/images/graemlins/frown.gif). Oh well, consider this interest.

I studied Japanese in college, I know a bit... Anyway, I wrote a program dubbed the "Kanji Quizzer" which was sort of an electronic-flash card program used to help you memorize readings and meanings of Kanji... Would you be interested in using it? If so I'll dig it up and put it online (it is a Java applet so it will run right in your web browser)...

Also, I found that I had a great deal of success working with real life flash cards too... I'd suggest tearing your normal sized index card into fours, and working from there... during my time at college those little flashcards could be found all over my room!

The important thing is to get a good foundation imo. The best way is to maybe attend a class for a year or so, then from there on, simply get any book with more advance grammar and study on your own. All the while learning new vocabs. Aside from that, once you started learning on your own, try to get a hold of japanese music or tv shows and get familiar with how people say things in real life. The more you can keep youself exposed to the language, the faster you can pick it up.

Where can I find a Japanese language tutorial? I went to Osaka a few months ago and couln't understand anithing, atleast the Japs knew english, I think they where saying something about me or making fun of me, I just told them your mamma just in case.

What do you mean? Generally I don't watch anime! I may have a few anime DVDs (akira,rurouni kenshin) but I have the japanese versions and english subtitles are not featured!

 

What?! you dont have the japanese versions with english subtitles??! i find those versions much better than the english versions lol =P. well, for studio ghibli films anyways... i dont understand japanese and therefore cannot make judgements on how good the voice acting is... and i find the overacting of some of the english voice acting annoying =S. especially van der beek's (Dawson in Dawson's Creek) voice in Castle in the Sky... *yuk.

 

I find that Japanese voice actors for anime take their job much more seriously, and they actually record the dialogue as a group, rather than in seperate booths at seperate times, etc.

Trying to learn myself - I dunno where to start though.

I would like to learn it during term time at University, but the problem is that language lessons are at another campus - and I can't make trips to both, so I have to decide what i'm gonna have to get started personally...

He's replaying to another post. He thinks japanese slang are more interesting than bad words, and how he has problems with keigo, which most westerners do.

 

Ive begun my japanese studies October last year her in Hamburg. It will take some time to make the language more fluid, and to get all Kaniji-readings in your mind. Then we can talk about translations.
