Jeezus Christ, this game is awesome (thoughts from a VF4 EVO rookie)

I purchased this game awhile back for my import PS2. I was very impressed with it, but it didn't exactly "click". I started out with Brad, got around 150 games in with him, then moved to Shun where I got in 150 games. Throughout this time, I had played a bit with Goh...I had no idea what I was doing, and found him to be sluggish and unresponsive (much like I found Akira, I simply could not do his combos).

Anyhow, I began to tire of Shun and checked out Goh again. I made a concentrated effort to understand the character to some extent. I played a bit, and had fair success. I spent a good amount of time going through Goh threads and watching Goh media. Finally, I consulted the Goh quickstart FAQ made by CreeD (Fantastic job by the way).

I began to learn the terminology I see you guys use all the time (sounded like stereo instruction in Arabic before). The guide also taught me how to use the basics and little details like the low punch, and basing a lot of Gohs action off high and low punches. It sounds simple, and it is. But, I've never cared to much for a fighter to learned the little things.

Anyhow, I went and practiced Hsing I ( a martial art) all day long in Chinatown (NYC) today and came back home exhausted. I chilled out for awhile and picked up VF4 EVO, selected Goh and for the first time it "clicked". I began to use Goh with some bit of understanding, rather then lashing out a combo or going for a throw at less then oppertune times.

A lot of these threads and media have helped me, however CreeDs guide was the most helpful. I still have a hell of a lot of stuff to learn. I should go down to Chinatown to get destroyed by the pros when I have the cash. In the meantime, I'll work on my Goh. Thanks for reading.

Welcome to the fold, my friend. Creed's Goh guide is excellent, as are all the other guides on this site.

I think the first time it "clicked" for me in VF was when things started to make sense after reading an Akira FAQ by somebody named "Joji". I finally got how the character's styles were manifested in the gameplay. I got to thinking about overall game strategy, which helped to me to make better decisions during the match.

    random stab in the dark

    samurai form gfaqs?

And I agree. Creed's Goh guide is fantastic. One of the most helpful FAQ type documents I ever did read actually.

Hehe, random stab is correct. I'm "samurai" from gamefaqs. How did you know?

    Thanks for reading fellahs.

I wish I could use the VF1 character models in quest mode. That's my random line for this post.

OK, I'm off to either sleep or practice with Goh in training mode.

I have way too much free time.

Which means I lurk a goddamn lot.

I remember you're large ass 'starting with a new...' topic from the ma board. So the Hsing I in NYC made me think for a moment.

Then I clicked that the same person who amde that topic was asking about Gh stuff on the evo board earlier and that was that.

    yeah I need a hobby.

That's great that you have Evo and pros around you

we you can get destroyed. /versus/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

What I mean by this is you have all the necessities to

become a much better VF player quickly, which is PS2,

and better players. Good luck practicing the game.

This game is soooo deep and serious, so the more

you learn about the game, the deeper the game will

become, which is pretty cool. /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif

If I ever get back online without having to use a public library, I'll put up the updated goh guide... I'm glad he's become the character that clicks for you, he's a lot of fun and I think he's a good newbie character. All his combos are easy and you can win with just 2 or 3 good guesses between combo-or-throw. You'll need human players to beef up your defense though... lucky for you NYC is full of them.
