I've gotten a few questions about this. I realize I can't recognize the faces or names of a lot of famous players myself. Here are some I do know.
edit: added some info from Summah, who has changed his nick on irc after years and years and now wants to be called "silent" even though it makes no sense.

Famous since the days of VF2 for his wolf play. Kind of known for being a showoff, especially in his younger days. You'll see him stand up and pump his fist when he wins or punch the screen in irritation. Now a member of C-Chaps.

87.6 and 87.5% ... it's a beautiful thing. Two awesomely skilled lau players. Hakkusion is going to korea soon for a tournament (unconfirmed) and I expect him to give our ambassadors from mount dora a hard time. PS: just informed by summah.. err, "Silent" that the right hand lau's name is just koryu. Sorry! Will update image.

Ohsu plays akira and wins, that's about all I can say about him. Shu is the most well known shun player in japan (since VF2/3?) and is a member of chibita and kyasao's team.

Arashi, formerly a coldhearted jacky player, took Goh almost all the way in the green book DVD tournament. He had yoro on the ropes, it's a shame. I hope he sticks with goh.

The most recognizable face in VF. Owns with lion. He was around in the VF3 days as well, and probably earlier. Usually has the best win rate in the country... expect him to win 9/10 games.
Chibita Trivia! Chibita was turned onto VF by Joe. What have you done joe?!

The clark-kent-like Lei Fei representative. Dances around and often makes the opponent look kinda hapless.

The other "best-lei-fei-in-japan", his win rate is probably higher than hereru's. So why's the dude look like he wants to jump off a bridge?
Edit: This is the one who's on C-chaps, my apologies for the mixup!

Has played a flashy killer kage since VF2, and doesn't hunker down and hide either. Is frequently at the top of the vf.net rankings because he plays so many characters so well (80%+ win rate). His jeffry is a joy to behold.

Tokyo's beastly Akira player. Reams hapless female characters without remorse. Eats nails for breakfast.
He, arashi, and Hakkusion Lau are all on the same team. Scary! But it gets worse. They also have goro 2000, hanami, and nagato. Teamname: Shizuoka Ocha

Segaru kicks ass. He's a wolf player known for his arrogance and serious, sneering, broody demeanor. Very focused in tournaments, I think his win percentage doesn't reflect how good he is when he's determined. Not that his percentage is anything to sniff at.

Winner of the green book DVD tournament, and all around kage thug.
Maintains an awesomely high win rate, probably above kyasao's. Not afraid to backwards crouch dash every so often =P

Mask de Hijetsu, whose name is probably more famous thanks to the PS2 than anything else /versus/images/icons/tongue.gif

Napoleon, who took out Segaru to win a recent tournament. Napoleon is ..how to put this delicately... a PETE-style jacky, which means he's probably less popular than some other tournament winners /versus/images/icons/tongue.gif

Kurita, a strong vanessa player and Zerochan's backup hero when hereru isn't in town. He can be one of the tiny handful of people who can say they knocked chibita out of a tournament /versus/images/icons/blush.gif
Before, he was a famous taka player. He won the java tea tournament and was sponsored by sega or java tea to fly out to Sydney. Yes, our very own myke played him. He wrote the brad and vanessa section of the green book also.

Can't forget The Man in korea, he was famous before VF4 for his insanely difficult combo vids in VF2, then in VF3 he travelled to japan and won the international section of the maximum battle competition... beating his compatriot ige lau. Said by one of the guys in Korea's VF4 irc channel: "Shinz is an alien ^_^" (i.e. plays somewhere beyond the realm of normal humans).

Aka moonsuk, shinz' brother. An awesome akira player, and naturally a member of shinz' team (Replays). He puts a lot of stock in instinct, and he copes with offensive skills well. Sort of expected, look who he trains with.

Yes, there ARE more than one or two good players in korea. Zzangmu is a jacky player with strong psychological tactics. Woongsun is a kage player with a 90% win rate and killer yomi. Zzangmu is Crazy Boys, Woongsun is Replays. Replays has a good female Akira player as well! Her nick is Morigan. Playing Replays must be pretty painful, akira akira akira kage

Ohsu also plays a great Vanessa and Brad, along with a bunch of other characters I haven't seen. The Vanessa is noteworthy because it is about 80% OS.

Also, Masque du Hijitetsu seems to have almost entirely dropped Jacky in favor of Brad.

I've been tragically mislabeled a party pooper for not wanting my pic spammed, but if anyone's smart enough they can find my pic on the net for free just by doing some logical toying with my original post.

Mystery Girl is a regular at Shibuya High tech. I've seen her on many occasions.

if the attire in any of the above causes people to wonder fashion sense in Japan, then don't bother coming over here w/o a camera. Tame is an understatement. Nowhere else can you get away with conflicting plaids and knee-high socks.

Sad thing is, if this lil girl were to play against 6 year old Chibitarou the results would be far more spectacular then most of us would muster.

A frined has edited all the matches from the GreenDVD into seperate files, and will be whacking them up on a server somewhere soon for all you non-broadband 56k modem users /versus/images/icons/wink.gif

We've been naming the clips but if anyone could tell us the ring names of the following it would be helpful.

The Jeffry Player (Where's fishermans hat and glasses, was breaten by Yoro in the beat tribe)

The Shun Player (Not SHU, the other guy who had a special match against Kurita in Best Bout)

The Jacky Player (Not Neotawah, he was beaten by Ani (VF Love Sarah) early in the Beat Tribe, and than never seen again on the DVD!)

The Akira Player (Not Ohsu, Mukky or Homestay...the other Akira)

The Lion Player (You got it, not Chibita but the other guys who wears the sleveless white t-shirt)

Oh, I got some VHS tapes from a friend featuring a verC Beat-Tribe tourney and an Evo Beat Tribe tourney, we're trying to transfer footage to PC to encode for the web, we'll let y'all know our progress /versus/images/icons/wink.gif

I can help u from memory

The other shun player is yanaga.
For those who's interested...him n kurita were featured in the 1st concept match in the dvd. He was the highest ranked Japanese player in the vf3 max battle international tournament. So he was considered 'highest rank' or so.. Kurita won the java tea tournament..so put two winners together n this is what they came up with.

The other akira player is western lariat.
Came fourth in the zepp tokyo tournament. Mo I am sure u know who I am talking abt. Napolean stepped over him in the tourney to advance to the finals hehe. As usual, they all had their revenge against Napolean in the GB DVD hehehe. Western lariat is bloody awesome..highly underated imo due to lack of online appearances.

Forgot who the others were...will have to look at the dvd or green book again.

The pai that came third is (god i hope i spelt it correctly) suchikumo.

Sadly..Jin is not in the dvd at all..
Wonder where him n kyasao went off to kekeke~

Side note : I thought I should share this funny interview that was featured in the dvd, seeing as those who DLed the clips will not get to see the interview.

Before mukki and oshu's concept match...both were interviewed by the BT guy (u know..the screamer...he's such a freak..he knows the name of all the moves in the game!)

When mukki was asked abt his chances of winning oshu...mukki reply ' well realistically, oshu is good...but he is after all, a country boy (giving shit), so naturally..i should win'

which oshu then replied ' well, he's right u know...i am indeed..from the country...but I'm no fool, unlike him (pointing at mukki) who's an idiot in the head!'

I thought the highlight of the dvd was listening to these two talking smack all in the name of good fun haha~

^^^ That was funny, can please tell me what did Segaru and Napoleon say before the match? I have the DVD but I don't know Japanese...

    the screamer asked segaru
'so...wolf vs jacky...wolf is kinda weaker compared to jacky..so how do u rate ur chances of winning?'

segaru answered ' well..u're right..wolf is weaker than jacky...but I am stronger than napolean..so naturally, i should win'

Not to take it the wrong way..but i reckon he reeks of confidence man, not arrogance. He is THAT good.
According to the GB, his motto is 'be the best in what u do'.

    More power to him~
(maybe it's me being bias..but I reserve the most respect for Kage n wolf players /versus/images/icons/laugh.gif )
For anyone that is interested in knowing..i found kurita's motto very funny.
    Kurita's motto is 'study hard'
I wonder if he meant school text or vf text.
    Maybe both hehehe

That's Megane (glasses) - Rengou (combination, union, allience) Takabashi (high - Bridge?) Or something like that.
Takabashi is his name it seems, as his team is displayed as Megane-Rengou (Glasses union)

Arumajiko otouto. The katakana is propably meant to be "El Magico" otouto (younger brother). .

The "Mystery Lau Girl" is called "Yousu" btw.

I gotta say that 1stAngel Akira in that pic with Chibita and Shun is incredibly good looking in that pic... she barely even looks Japanese and appears to be of European descent...a wowful. Wonder if that's how she looks in person. Anyway, is she really famous too, does she ever play in the videos? Who else besides Akira does she use?

Speaking of Japanese fashion sense, does anyone remember what BunBun Maru looked like back in the good vf2 days? His hair was spiked upward and was dye-free, and he wore everyday-urban threads. I remember this because the first time I saw Bunbun in video was on the Strategy Revolution dvd and it made me think he was a dress-freak. And then I come across one of the old tourney videos for vf2 and see him all laced up. Makes me wonder if it's been that long since those golden years.

Would you happen to have a better pic of 1st Angel Akira? She appears to be quite attractive. Also, if I remember correctly, someone who posts here played her; and got trounced. I'm sure it's not uncommon to lose to a girl over in Japan; or a 7yr. old for that matter /versus/images/icons/smirk.gif
