try this... it might be a decent place to start. At least you can become friends with native speakers.

I guess that won't satisfy you cause you want to learn it right away but in six months or so I am going to study Japanese and you can hit me up and I can provide you with what I'm learning

I think that it would be difficult to learn Japanese effectively through the internet. I've found that learning Japanese is expensive, whether it is through buying books or software. Rosetta Stone's web site has a feature where you might be able to learn from native speakers online, but it might be meant to be a supplement to owning the software.

To put this into perspective for you, I own maybe 11 or more pieces of study material, books and software, and it's still hard to learn Japanese. Before you commit yourself to learning this language (it's vastly different from English), think to yourself about how much time you are willing and able to dedicate to learning this language.

I too will hit you up with what you have learned. [IMG]

I've tried for a week a few months ago learning from the internet but I didn't have much time because of high school but I learned a few things fairly quickly, it was a fantastic site that I unfortunately don't remember the name of anymore. [IMG]

I'm going to see how much I can learn in the next few months through the internet before I decide on my next course of action.

since people seem interested maybe someone could organize or setup a dedicated group? Maybe everyone could converse through Skype or some other alternative and learn together?

I would join such a group but as mentioned before the problem is I still have to finish my A levels and I'm doing community service for 6-9 months, so it still takes a while to university. But it would be no problem for me to provide you with what I'm learning there (translating from German to English so you can understand it of course).

There are already several talented Japanese speakers in the VFDC community, for example Reno. Maybe he and others are interested in participating in such a group.

keep in mind that reno lives in Japan so there is a big time difference between him and most people. also, he's a busy guy.

Yes, I dont mean to discourage you, but you should join an evening course or something. It's hard to learn a language on the computer, you should interact with people and learn from them...a bit like learning VF!

Hm, yeah, that's the main problem I guess. The community consists of people from many different countries so it will be hard to find a time consensus (if the group gets together at all)

Would people here be interested in me linking to the books that I use? I find them to be effective.

I think if everyone has around the same level of dedication then skype would be a fantastic idea!

When I meant learning from online I didn't mean everything, but it is very possible to learn some letters and words without much difficulty to prepare for the next level. I'm probably going to take courses in college to supplement my learning but I want a solid start.

That would be fantastic; I'm interested in everything you or anyone has to offer that helps.

    First, look into this series.

    Japanese From Zero

I'm only on the first book in this series, but it has been effective in teaching me Japanese so far.

For learning kanji, this is your book.

    Essential Kanji

Japan currently uses the jouyou kanji, but this book lists the touyou kanji. AFAIK, they are the same except that the touyou kanji has more characters (2,000 kanji total in this book).

    Japanese Grammar

A nice little book on Japanese grammar. The same company has a book on Japanese vocabulary that you might want to check out (I don't have the vocabulary book).

    Japanese Step by Step

I haven't gotten around to starting this book, but a quick look inside leads me to believe that it could be excellent.

    Kana Flashcards

Japanese doesn't have an alphabet, but it has a couple of syllabaries and kanji. These flashcards taught me hiragana and katakana. The visual mnemonics featured with these cards aid with the learning process. The same company makes cards for kanji, but in my personal opinion, they are best used if you have already studied kanji in the past. They provide the on yomi (Chinese readings) and kun yomi (Japanese readings), but they do not contain romaji (English). Plus, they contain examples of kanji usage that, unless you are familiar with the Japanese language a bit, you are not going to understand in the sentences given. For instance, one card points out that the kanji for 10,000 could be used to mean shoplifting. I don't think that a beginner to learning kanji should concern himself with that until he is at a more advanced level. I'd stick with the book for learning kanji that I linked to above.

    The Kanji Dictionary

This dictionary is maybe worth getting once you are into Japanese enough that you would need to look up kanji and its compounds. The same company offers "The Learner's Japanese Kanji Dictionary" too, but I haven't checked that out. My advice is to check the reviews of this book first.

Those web sites will help you get some basics down, but becoming advanced unfortunately requires money. I personally take exception to the way the first web site you linked is presented. There are better materials out there.

There's not a problem with trying to use whatever free resources you can on the net if you're treating this as a hobby. But if this is something that you're impassioned about, then let me tell you that part of the battle is not to be exposed to certain materials because you'll become too confused (and the first site you linked to is errant).

    Good luck! [IMG]
