Hi there, a bit of a plea for help on the Lei Fei front.

I find Lei Fei to be a really cool character and would really like to get better with him. However as a noob and with his stances it is somewhat bewildering.

I play Akira as main and found his top 10 moves thread:

    http://virtuafighter.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/155282/page/1#Post155282

incredibly helpful as it formed a really nice starting point to get into the character. Which moves to use and practise! I've already gone through the Black book Lei Fei thread but still find it a bit confusing. Would it be possible for any of you pros to create a top 10 move list for Lei Fei in the same vein as the Akira one?

    Thanks a bunch!

In my opinion some of his best, I'll have to play him a bit more to get to 10. :p

Most of Lei's movelist and all his stances are actually quite practical but these are the moves I use most often.

    * means this move can be used in multiple mixups. I would have to explain it in my faq (Below).

I made a Lei Faq once and I was thinking of posting it again with some of his new stuff. It's sort of my Meat and Potatoes Faq for Lei 's best moves and setups.

I would definitely check out noodalls' post Lei Fei Stances, (translated from the black book, I believe). It has a pretty in-depth move discussion and there are some great general tips for Lei Fei in there.

My personal top-ten list (at the moment):

    1. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif - Quick high to mid, and sets up a great offensive guessing game between a third /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, Doku-/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif-cancel -> throw, Doku-/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif, etc. Pretty much the basis of my Lei Fei's game. After the /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, delaying a Doku-/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif is very strong against evaders. For counter-attackers, you can just stay in Doku to auto-counter most of their fast counter attacks.

    2. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/uf.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif - Decently fast mid that doesn't clash, slams on normal hit, and provides ~50 damage depending on the follow up combos. Unsafe, but great against abare low punches or a non-guaranteed throw attempt, or after you back dash causing them to whiff. I usually go for /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif afterwards, but I'm lazy and there are better (but more situation-specific and difficult to enter) combos.

    3. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif - Lei's best throw, in my opinion. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif is a very easy follow up that will get you 58 damage and sets you up for good okizeme. There are other, more complicated follow-ups, but from my testing they only get you 1-3 more damage and sacrifice your okizeme setup. Mixing this throw in to your various strings (often with a /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif-stance-cancel) is very powerful, as people frequently freeze-up when playing someone as string-happy as lei.

    4. Doku-/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif - A 15 frame mid that stumbles on normal hit. People will often go for slower (non-auto-counterable) moves when you are in Doku Ritsu, for which this move will net you a hefty chunk of damage and set up a favorable guessing game (after the stumble).

    5. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif - 14 frame mid, and pushes opponents to a very favorable distance for lei, has great range, and is great in general for keeping the pressure on (the key to winning with lei).

    6. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif - Lots of offensive choices from this, and it's fast and half-circular. Use /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif after to go into Ura Koko stance, and from there you have lots of great choices. Don't forget to use the second /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif on occasion to keep opponents honest.

    7. Hai - /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif - +6 on block, and +19 on counter hit, plus pushes opponent quite far. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif is a very strong follow up, as well as simply dashing in and throwing.

    8. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif - Unsafe, but large damage potential. Sometimes ducks high attacks (I believe), and has decent range. Great after a backdash or successful evade against a slow move. I usually go for /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif,Doku-/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif afterwards, but again, I'm lazy. Check the combos post for better followups, if you have the time and skill to use them.

    9. HCF-/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif - If you can do the multi-part throw consistently, otherwise /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif or /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif (followed by the same combos as after /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif). For when your opponent escapes /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif throws. After that, I'd go to /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif.

    10. Hai-/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif (arrow punch)- Moves way up in the list if your opponent is poor at evading or frequently commits to strings that are all going to whiff. Because it ducks highs (and some mids, I believe) you can sometimes get a fully charged arrow punch off right next to an opponent in the middle of a high-string. Use the non-charged version to quickly close the distance or to catch a back dasher. Easy to evade, but depending on the distance, you can often be out of range for a counter-attack. Also great for catching back-turned tech-rollers (like after a stomach crumple - /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif combo) for stupid amounts of damage.

Honorable Mention. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif - I didn't use to use this much, but it has a lot of useful properties: Special high means it's a great answer to low punch spammers, and it's half-circular as well. It's -10 on block, but you can go into Boku Tai immediately afterward (with /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif) to avoid most counter-attacks, and on hit you are in a great situation (+2 or +4 in Hai stance). This will probably move up in my list as I get used to using it.

Also Honorable Mention. Koko-/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif - 14-frame low sabaki with stumble on normal hit or better. Coupled with Koko-/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, you can keep your opponent on the defensive when you are in Koko stance. Will interrupt most non-sabaki-able moves (at least, when near-even) in my experience. Just watch the evade.

Of course, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif is always great, but it's not very lei-specific and I don't have anything to add to other posts on the subject.

    Hope that helps...

Yes! Thanks guys - especially drEel for the in depth reply. This was exactly what I was looking for /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Been playing Lei-Fei quite a bit this week but have been coming up short as he obviously plays a lot differently to Akira! As i'm not familiar with all of Lei-Fei's abilities yet i've still not figured out his spacing - i tend to try to keep a mid-longer distance away from the opponent...

With his huge combo potential i've found that i've been trying to keep up offensive pressure but have found at this stage that Lei moves seem to come out relatively slowly (bar ->->P!). So my play's changed slightly - keeping patient waiting for wiffs and then going for the combos!

But at any rate, thanks again, this will certainly form a good base!

I have at some point learned to play every character in VF except Lei Fei. I thought I could get away without learning Lei Fei but with his growing popularity and top top tier status I've realized I can no longer afford not to. So I messed around with him in arcade mode a little bit this weekend, and I've realized that Lei Fei isn't that hard to learn if you take it in stages. His movelist and possible flowcharts are just too numerous to learn all at once.

So far I've focused on his basic moves and a few key attacks from stance (LEI FEI IS SOOO STRONG). I still do not understand most of his stances, properties of some of his stance attacks, how they should be used or how they should flow. Nevertheless, based on what I've learned so far here's what I think his top 10 moves are right now:

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif
Automatically in, not counting as part of top 10.

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif
High middle middle. Even though Lei Fei doesn't have a traditional punch, the very good punch string more than makes up for it. You also have the option to go into stance after the second or third punch.

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif
Fast, ultra safe, and pushes opponent away even on block so Lei Fei can go into his sick long range attacks.

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d_.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif
Safe, quick, mid hitting, decent distance, and best of all high damage potential. What more do you want?

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif
Ridiculously good move. Too good, I think. It's two mid attacks and the second can be delayed heavily so you can throw instead for mind games. Lei can go into stance after the first swipe for very good options (sabaki, quick jump kick, full circular low). Most annoyingly, both attacks are half circular; I hope they change this in Version C and make them both linear.

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif
Not as easy to use as /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif but similar properties and higher damage obviously if the second /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif connects.

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/uf.gif or /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif
An evade attack that you can hit check. Great damage.

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/uf.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif
High damage from normal hit, and very fast.

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif
As if Lei Fei doesn't have enough weapons, he also gets a long range sweep!

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/u.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif
I'm only going to list the stance here, but really it's all the attacks from this stance. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif for a long range, safe mid attack. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/u.gif or /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif is a long range sweep with some evasive properties. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif to stagger, and is fast and safe. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif if you need one frame faster than /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif for combos. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif is an AWESOME attack that is safe and with high damage potential. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif is now safe (WTH??) and you can use the /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif version as mix-up. Most of the time as you go into this stance you will accidentally reverse punch anyway so don't be shy to use it! Definitely a stance that should figure in heavily into your rotation.

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif
/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif is ridiculous -- high advantage on block and very quick to initiatie. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif is fantastic and safe. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif will float on counter and safe too. Best of all, when Lei Fei has the disadvantage just go into /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif stance to avoid your opponents' attacks and to open up some very strong options, like /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif or /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif float.

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif
    High damage throw. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif > /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif > /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif

    HCF /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif
High damage throw. Don't be fooled -- this 60 point multi-command throw is very easy to do.

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif
I believe every character should be played with at least 3 throws in mind.

Well that's really 13 moves I've listed, but I've actually cheated because two of those moves are stances. That's how many really good weapons Lei Fei has. This is why he is top tier and why he is the latest national champ in Japan.

If you are interested in the monk, I strongly urge you to start playing Lei Fei! He is not as difficult to learn as I thought as long as you take a layered approach. Hell, even when you're in the middle of a stance and not sure what you're doing, "controlled button mashing" will STILL get you quite far in most circles here in the U.S. and even better will make you seem unpredictable. Best of all, no matter how cheap you play him people will think you are being flashy. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Actually it doesn't. What you experience or saw is a whiffed low punch before a /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/uf.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif is executed.

You can easily test it out in training mode by setting the CPU to guard and do low punch.

On a side note, Blaze's /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/u.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif totally beats low punches at disadvantage or not!

Lei Fei's not nearly as hard as I thought he would be. I used to hate stance characters with a passion and never thought I could learn him. Now I just love the way he plays.

You just have to take it slowly. What I find to be an easy way to work is first learn moves and combos without trying to think about what stances you're in. Just only think about certain moves that you want and look at the stances at just extra button notations to get the move to come out. After you get comfortable, then you can start getting used to utilizing different stances at your disposal. The fact that every stance only has so many moves seems to help as well.

will someone please explain how to perform the rakan shintengeki. the first two parts of the throw aren't problematic, but what should be the timing of the input for the third part of the throw? i'm controlling with the high grade if it makes any difference.

no timing, just do everything as one set, just do it smoothly, dont even need to input it too fast

    Hello,
Still pretty new to the game. Just picked it up about two months ago. Making some decent progress thus far. Just wondering from the Lei Fei vets here if their top 10 move list has changed since ver C came out.

edit* Just realized that I have been a member since 2002... haha... Yah Namco Fighters sorta had me distracted from VF. But what I have grown to love about VF that Tekken/Soulcalibur lacks is that VF tends to be more consistent. Moves tracking properly is a good thing lol.

I know yall've been waiting for this one. After years of playing Virtua Fighter, studying the mechanics of the game & losing TONS of sleep. I've finally compiled a top 10 list for his moves. Here it is

    1. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif this is a nice opener to a match

    2. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif this move is half circular and looks cool

    3. Hi sheeki /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif this move can make people fly!

Re: Lei Fei's Top 10 Moves

    pff i disagree

    1) /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif - fast, leads to high damage guessing game if they cant stagger recover, or you can throw you learn a lot about a player by doing this a couple times. Specifically, if they can eteg or not.

    2) /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif - akira, pai, lau, bane of their existence.

    3) hai shiki /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif - c'mon, you know we all use it CONSTANTLY

    4) /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif - nuff said.

    5) /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/uf.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif - so fast, great for after evading. you know we should all use it way more than we do.

    6) koko shiki /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif - once in a while there comes a move so powerful that EVERYONE has to learn it. Thus making it predictable, and EVERYONE knows how to get out of it and when it comes. This my friends is that move. its properties are just insane. Unfortunately its predictable so not very effective, but when it does work we all get giddy inside, and laugh at the poor bastard.

    7) hai shiki /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif - advantage on block, nuff said.

    8) /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif - combo starter, combo finisher, guessing game starter, fast, ducking, this move has it all.

    9) /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif - super fast, throws em back, total momentum stopper.

    10) /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif - this move is totally underappreciated imho.
