MK vs DC thoughts and reactions...

I can't help but buy basically every fighting game that comes out. I had set the mental bar pretty low for this new edition of MK but I was actually pleasantly surprised. After playing the last few 3D Mortal Kombats, I was glad to hear they changed the fighting system; the old one sucked.

This game is much more of a throwback to MK3. There's actually some depth and skill involved in playing this game. This is the closest MK has come to Street Fighter yet. The game has-two-in-ones, super-cancels and cool juggles. The game is very combo driven, a lot like MK3 was. You need to have some good combos to play at a higher level.

I haven't played much at all, maybe 3 hours, but I had a lot more fun than I thought I would. The Kombo Challenge is very tough and a perfect mode for the hardcore fighting game player. If you can pull off all 10 combos listed for your character, you got skillz.

The online mode is lag-free and people aren't all using the same character. I played against a lot of different guys last night. The most important thing the game has going on though: it actually takes skill and good control to win. This isn't a button masher. It has many combos, but they are much more based on canceling into special moves, a la Street Fighter, than mashing them out. I'm happy with the fighting system, for the most part anyway.

I'm not too into the modes where the camera zooms but it's not that common and doesn't last long. The free fall thing is cool cause you can nail them with a super if you charge it up high enough and then the finish just looks nasty! Superman beating you as you fall and then eye-lasering you hard into the ground at the end just looks awesome period.

Overall, I think it's a good fighter and it blows every MK since MK3 out of the water. If you're looking for something to play until HD Remix drops, I can comfortably say, "fighting fans in general will enjoy this game..."

I'll be playing Fallout 3 and Metal Gear Online until ST:HDR comes out.

And then once ST:HDR and SF4 are both out, my life is officially over.

 

Damn homie, kudos on the review. So is there a damage limit like in MK3? I can't wait for some cool Youtube vids.

 

You can do some brutal combos but they are definitely prohibitively difficult. I found a 52% Jax combo but if I ever was actually able to do it in a match I'd be the man... I doubt I ever will though.

 

I'm hearing the total opposite from folks at SRK.

They may be playing on PS3 and not on 360. The games I played on XBOX LIVE were all lag-free. I didn't experience any slowdown or choppiness at all, so I'm not sure what system they are talking about...

 

Don't waste your money... coming from a long time MK fan this game is the absolute fucking worst. So pissed off I wasted my $70 bucks yet again on Midway thrash.

Animation - choppy as fuck, you think they would get this right considering how many of these damn 3-D games they made. I have seen GBA games with better animation.

Controls - are fucking just stupid. There is like 1 million buttons to do WHAT? and why do we need 2 fucking throw buttons. Worst part you can't even play this game on a fucking arcade stick. Great just like superman I gotta deal with fucking PAD kryptonite. And WHY do you have to HOLD a button just to walk around in 3-D? MIDWAY YOU GUYS SUCK AT DEVELOPING! PLEASE GO BACK TO THE GOOD OLD 2-D DAYS, BECAUSE YOUR CURRENT 3-D GAMES BLOW!

Sound effects are just ZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz you would think they would be done with the silly grunts and groans by now. The men sound like they are constipated, the women sound like someone shoved they thumb up there ass while bouncing on some cock.

The story is alright I guess, probably the only good think about this game. I take that back I would have to say the stages are the only good thing about this game. I was really impressed by some of the stages.

 

The ign review seems to think it was more than likely due to the XBL wonkiness (last week), and that every should be fine. Like you state.

 

MK ended in MK4 for me. All MK games after MK4 are cool just for the artwork...

 

Agreed! Game has gone to shit since the debut of MK4. MK4 was good for about 2 months, but that dwindled quickly once the pleasure of ripping off someone's leg with Shinnock wore off.

Now it's definitely all eye candy. I don't think I will every buy another one. This one really left a bad taste in my mouth and my MK heart.

When I saw someone playing the game on Justin.TV prior to the release, I knew I wouldn't get it. I knew I wouldn't get it prior to that though. But after watching that guy play, I noticed that it reminded me of the previous 3 MKs: DA, Dec, and Armageddon. With the exception of changing fighting styles. Movement is the same. Animations are pretty much the same. There is no fluidity to the game at all. And I can't believe that while I was voicing my opinion about it while that guy was playing, some other guy in that chatroom had to nerve to tell me don't hate. Well, when the game is complete CRAP, what else can you do?

 

Dude, how could your expectations be that high??? This game was like Sarah Palin at the VP debate, the bar is real low. It's better than I thought it would be by far and away, so I'm pleasantly surprised... I was expecting MK Armageddon basically. MK vs DC blows Armageddon away.

 

Nah trust me my expectations were not that high. It's just that this game is just that bad.
