My Left 4 Dead Superguide

I took the time to write down a superguide for Left 4 Dead on Giant Bomb. It turned out quite well too .

Very very nice Leonard. Its funny because I was going through the commentary and previously, if the witch was startled, she'd take out the whole team.

 

Leonard, I was playing Left 4 Dead last night and we were down to two guys.

Me and some other dude.

A Tank killed me and he (My teammate)ran back to the safe room.

This was on expert difficulty by the way.

So the Tank chases him back and he goes in and closes the door. I, of course, expect him to get spread all over the walls. But he crouches right up against the closed door with a shotgun and fires up through the window.

The Tank just keeps swinging at him without knocking down the door and he kills it easily.

I haven't tried this myself yet but it's definetly something you should look into.

Also, I was healing myself once and a boomer threw up over me and a teammate. Yet, for some reason there was no vomit on me. At all.

I've tried to emulate that but to no avail. I think it was just a lucky one off.


One more thing, the hunting rifle is beast.

It goes right through multiple enemies, kills regular horde with one hit regardless of where you shooot them, is good against Hunters, Smokers and Boomers, has a good rate of fire and a decent clip size.

You can reload your gun and then keep melee attacking and your gun will reload anyway. Usefull for beating off a horde charge.

 

Did you play the 360 or PC version, Seidon?

I myself had many Tank encounters and we, at first, also ran back to the safe room. The Tank came after us, ripped open the door with a Boulder Throw and killed us with ease in the small room. (Was on Blood Harvest)

Can you confirm that the Sniper Rifle doesn't do much damage vs. Tanks? [Something we found out but have no stats proof for. Probably it's because you rarely hit the Tank's head, dunno.]

Maybe you've encountered a Boomer bug? Sounds funny lol. No Boomer bile for you!

 

Some safe rooms he can't get into for whatever reason, some he can break down and others you can't even close the safe room door.

There's also a metal meat locker or something you can hide in from the Tank in some chapters but he can sometimes even hit you with his swinging hitbox if you're too close to that door, and you can oddly enough shoot him through it though.

I'm playing on the 360.

It was on No Mercy part 2 when the guy killed the tank. I've had the Tank kill me in that very safe room but I didn't crouch at the door.

To find damage numbers play vs mode.

 

The guide now holds hints for the Campaign Finales, starting with Blood Harvest at first.

I can help you on No Mercy Finale.

Once you're outside at least.

Best strategy is to get on top of the base. Next to the door of the stairwell you can jump onto a little ledge. Follow this around to the back of the building and stand right there.

All four of you should have Auto shotguns.

Set any fuel tanks/gas cannisters below you.

Make sure at least one of you has a pipe bomb for the run to the chopper.

When you are on the edge the only thing that will ever hit you (even on expert) is a hunter and that can be dealt with easily.

The Tanks you will have to deal with will just faff about underneathe you. They will be no problem at all.

For some reason Smokers never come round to this side of the roof either.

Sometimes there is a witch in the building where you spawn.

She is in one of a few places (that I have seen)

1.In the long corridor - Close in and auto shotty as a group.
2.At the lift shaft opening - Same as above
3.At the bottom of the first ladder. - Stand at the shaft opening and shoot her, she runs off the edge.
4.At the bottom of the second ladder. - Same as above.

Also, I played the other day and I killed the witch on my own. At the end loading screen it said:

Most damage dealt to Witch:

Seidon VFDC: 1005

So I assume she has exactly 1005 health. Again, this was on expert.

 

Actually thats not a good idea IMO.... standing around the back of the base is a good way to get smashed right off the building by a tank.(They can climb right up on that area with little effort) If it can happen easily on top of the base it can happen even easier around the back.

The best place to defend in that finale is the two adjacent rooms under the heliport itself..... its really close to the escape point,you can watch each others backs, you just really have to worry about tanks coming into such a small space and crushing you.
Hunters and smokers can get you but if you have two in each room you can shoot over your partners head while they melee. you can store cans of gas and propane inside the rooms for use later on. Escaping involves running around the side and up the ramp. There is a downside though in that its fairly hard to get anymore ammo once you set up shop in this location, but it can be done.

Have you tried round the back of the building?

The Tank just climbs on top of the little ledge in front of you, falls off, climbs up again, falls off again, clims up again....etc

Hell, it doesn't even try and throw boulders at you.


You will get covered in boomer bile though but the zombies won't reach you.

The only difficult part is getting to the chopper.

But that's not very difficult at all if you have a pipe bomb.

 

I'll have to try that then, I assumed he could get at you there.

 

I added the No Mercy Finale now. The Ledge tactics works wonders of course .

You should include the trick to bypass the lift in act 3 of no mercy.

I'll try to explain what to do.

When you get to the area with the lift go out the main door of the diner. Head straight forward and follow the wal in front of you round to the right. Jump up onto the ledge before you.

On the far left side on the ledge there is a shutter attatched to the building you need to go in.

If all 4 of you melee that door for 10 or so seconds you will knock it down. You will then be in the warehouse.

This is especially useful on expert and on VS mode.

I'm sure there will be more little tricks like that but none of them have surfaced yet.

 

Is it true that you can break out of the smoker's tongue grasp? My brother said it was and I didn't believe him till I saw it with my own eyes! All 3 guys were down and the last guy was getting choked by a smoker inside the trailer...away from the rest of the group. Right before he was gonna die, he breaks free an kills the smoker! WTF?

 

Nice hint, Seidon. I'm not sure whether I want to add too much walkthrough stuff to the guide. Intended are only the finales, but that may become subject to change later. (Once all finales have been added -- 2 more left. Next up is Dead Air.)

@HotD: Hm. When a Smoker snatches you with his tongue you usually have like one second to react and kill him to get free all by yourself. Haven't heard nor seen yet that you can do so while your life is being sucked up by the Smoker. But maybe someone has found a way to do so?
