New DOA3 Character models compared to VF4

The new DOA3 character are rumored to be between 30k to 40k polyongs per character model. From the picture and the movie below, the updated look of the new charcters seem to be more realistic. Flesh tones and lighting seem to be more accurate. Kasumi/Lei Fang and a few of the other charcters still look about the same, I can't wait to see if they update them. It seems like with every release of the game the breasts seem to bounce less which can be seen as a good or bad thing :) The face on the girl below looks close to a squaresoft cinema cut scene from many of the FF games. What do you guys think of this game? Will they go the route of VF2 to VF3 and try to make the game more realistic, or will it become more dumbed down?

See! The marginal returns concept still holds! The improvement in the characters is not THAT evident - when compared to DoA2, even though the characters are reputedly composed of 30,000 polys. But they still don't look as good as VF4 models with their awesome muscle definition and beautiful high contrast lighting.

DoA3 does boast some beautiful locales with impressive draw distance, particle effects to die for, and stylish presentation. But that pretty much, is it.

    Um isnt that what sells?

Also there is a HUGE difference fom TTT in that image above, absolutely huge compared to the stages too. That marginal returns thing doesnt hold true. Think about it we advanced in 12 months from TTT to DOA3. The pace of development is way faster that I expected. At this rate VF4 will be outdated in 2002. Going from 10,000 polys to 30,000 polys makes a giant difference, and graphics are developing faster than ever. The image above is proof in the pudding. So does that say anything for the law of marginal returns. NOPE, OPPS, NO WAY.

We weren't talking about what sells - but the visuals of the game when compared to existing offerings.

Also there is a HUGE difference fom TTT in that image above, absolutely huge compared to the stages too.

Mostly everyone who has seen the game - in person - says otherwise. The characters looked extremely close to the quality of DoA2. The backgrounds are of course superior to TTT, but when compared to VF4, it is too early to say. Like i said, draw distance and particle effects are the only things worth mentioning, visually.

Think about it we advanced in 12 months from TTT to DOA3

Its been a lot longer than that, as TTT was in development at around the time when PS2 hardware was being finalized.

Going from 10,000 polys to 30,000 polys makes a giant difference, and graphics are developing faster than ever

Nope..not in this case. And again, quite a few others concur with this.

The image above is proof in the pudding

Buwahahahah...definitely not, dude! You might want to get better "proof", dawg.

Here is an excerpt from someone who lives in Japan and was at the TGS:

DEAD OR ALIVE 3: Very little was shown. The clip featured a new female character in a silver and balck jumpsuit going through some training exercises. The graphics and animation were good, but it seemed to me exactly on par with the current DC version of DOA2.

Now, this guy might be exaggerating a little bit, but his sentiment was echoed by quite a few show-goers, as well as people on the net who watched the movie. If the overwhelming majority says that character-wise the game just didn't improve much graphically, then its obvious that it isn't that huge of a jump, now is it? Dawg, you are on a one-man crusade to say that GeForce is like 10 - 20x better than anything out there (thus proving theory of marginal returns wrong in this particular case), and it isn't! It is more advanced than the N2 (even though N2 has some advantages over it as well), but not by the amount that you seem to suggest. In terms of grpahics performance, It is EVOLUTIONARY, NOT REVOLUTIONARY.

Weeeeeeeeeeee...look at me! Look at my angular arm and dull lighting, even though i'm composed of 30-40,000 polygons!!! Behold the revolutionary graphical prowess of the XBox!!!

    both of you
it could be they just took the doa2 characters and threw them in cause they were rushed (thats what i speculated earlier, since they look way too similar.) being rushed for a industry show demo is notorious in the game industry.

as for the new characters, how do you know those are finalized characters or works in progress, you dont.
the fact that the old characters havent been updated makes me think that this is way less finalized than the models from vf4.
its unfair to compare at this stage. wayyyyyyyyyy to early.
also, it could be theyre putting more reasources into the levels than vf4.
also, their design styles are disimilar, im not sure if theyre going for realism over stylization as much as vf4 is.
for realism, that monk character in vf4 is the most 'believable' (wow, this medium has advanced if im using that word) character ive ever seen in a vid game (from a graphical standpoint ofcourse).

Hmm does someone remember me saying that?? Hmm I WONDER....

    What it boils down too....

For get all yer yimmerin and yammerin....I'm on a one man crusade huh? Then tell me why nvidia is worth more than Sega?? Tell me why the Geforce is currently the best selling line of graphic processors, tell me why Microsoft chose it for X-Box, and finally tell me why Apple dumped ATI to go with Geforce....

My pudding has dollar signs in it....what does yours? Polygons?

I agree and from the movie I saw the Backgrounds smashed VF4's. Beach vs Jeffery's, no contest IMO. Of course it all boils down too finished products but, how much does a N2 cost?

Bejeeezus Christ man! Why do you keep bringing money into this? What does that have to do with my assertion that thus far, the jump isn't that great in terms of visuals?! Sure, it is an improvement, but not enuff to throw out the marginal returns concept. That is the only thing i'm arguing about! Just like the jump from vf3 to vf4 isn't as great as the jump from vf2 to vf3. The graphics in vf4 and DoA3 look amazing, but due to the marginal returns concept applied to mass market consumer graphics hardware, the jump just isn't that significant! I'm sure most people would agree with me when i say that the jump from DoA2 to DoA3 isn't as jaw-breaking as the jump from the original DoA to DoA2. I mean, when Tecmo first released pics of DoA2 running on arcade, many people thought that Team Ninja was somehow using 2 Naomi boards in parallel - thats how amazing the graphics looked!

I wasn't to much impressed about the fighters. One big point is the lack of cloths-animation(if you compare the shaolin with all the DA3 Bunch for example). Also the faces look like barbie-doll faces, all made out of a similar concept( If you look at Lau chan you know what I mean, Shenmue-expierience did help a lot). Texture-work on the fighters doesn't seem to be impressive either. Look at Akira's dogi you can even see the fibres .No lightning effects on the fighters like in Sarah-Jacky stage. I think the Backgrounds are very impressive(waterm,icecave-mirroreffects) and the shattering of Objects looks also quite good.Okay Team Ninja probably didn't have much time for the demo......
Like I said before probably the two Gameengines(VF4-DA3) will have different priorities in terms of graphics. I still think Naomi2 can beat XBOX in some points(textures?, lightning effects)

He has even got the same side exchange move(flip over the back)

I think shun will get angry.....

The girl seems to practice snake-style. Still it almost looks like Lion fighting style.....no new ideas team ninja..poor preformance
