New to VF series and new to Lion, VF5 Online help?

Hey I haven't really played VF since like part 2 in the arcades back in the day. I played DOA a lot since then too. Now that VF5 went online I picked it up for 360. I chose Lion as my character, and have been doing "OK", but I want to do better.

I'm still very iffy on side stepping, counters (or whatever /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif does with Lion)Also I'm having a lot of problems figuring out what'll give me frame advatange. As it stands, I have great difficulty in figuring out Lion's fast mids, as I always seem to get beat out. All his mids seem to be single hit, with no follow ups, and leave him at a disadvantage on block (with no follow ups to inturrupt your opponent)

But yea, my gamertag is slayerfaith1982. Any advice?
