Rest assured that the game is identical to Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown so all current resources on here such as Command Lists with frame data, Combo Lists and the Wiki still apply. Hi, I've been reading the boards a few days now (since I got VF4 on PS2), and I have to say you lot are THE most helpful bunch of posters I've seen on any board, ever /versus/images/icons/smile.gif
Ok enough sucking up, here my problem:

I don't know who to play!

I'm an old Tekken fan, I kinda lost interest after 3, but I used to love Heihachi, and I'd like to start with a character who plays similar to him... But would I be wasting my time trying to play the same way as in Tekken?
I read the beginners guide for Tekken players, and although it was quite helpful, it didn't really solve my problem.

I guess what I'm trying to ask is would I be able to jump in with one of the upper tier chars or would I be best off starting with an "easy" char? And are there any that play like Heihachi (strong hits, but flowing moves).

Thanks in advance for answering such a stupid question /versus/images/icons/wink.gif

Heihachi in that Tekken game is definitely upper tier.. but in VF4 the tiers are not as distinct as in tekken. It would be foolish for me to suggest you play someone like Akira or Wolf if you are just starting out. Even though I'd probably get frowned on by the other VF players, some one i would suggest you play is Jacky. Playing him has a good 'flow' that you wanted, and his damage is rather high. You can't simply just jump in and play though. You MUST go through the tutorials and learn the intricate details about the VF engine. Being a former tekken player you might get frustrated at certain aspects of VF, like a lack of long pressure combos. Throwing, also, is a big part of VF that is almost nonexistent in tekken. Go through the tutorial and practice actually using the techniques in an actual fight, and definitely get some of the movie clips of good players to see how they play. You'll notice that good players don't throw out a flurry of attacks to continuously pressure the opponent. VF4 is a game that rewards you for putting the time to get good at it, i hope your dedication pays off. /versus/images/icons/laugh.gif

    Thanks for the help /versus/images/icons/smile.gif

I had noticed that the 2 games were very different, most of the chars have a decent 4 or 5 hit combo at most, unlike Tekken's 8+ hitters. The practise mode has been mega helpful in teaching me the differences (you can buffer an evade, block AND throw escapes /versus/images/icons/ooo.gif )
VF4 seems to be more of a thinkers game than Tekken, trying to make your opponent make a mistake then punishing them with a couple of hard hits or a throw seems to be more successful than button-mashing your way to victory /versus/images/icons/wink.gif
I'm a complete convert already if you haven't already guessed - I love this game /versus/images/icons/laugh.gif

I've been playing with Lau up til now cos he has the juggle combos that I loved so much as Heihachi, but he's not quite right for me, he seems a little too predictable.
I'll try Jacky now, and see if hes more my kind of char, thanks again /versus/images/icons/smile.gif

jacky is really good for starting VF, but don't hesitate to try everyone out, try them all out tosee who really suits you, and also to have an idea of your skill level in controlling these characters, in any case out of all these characters you're sure to find a character that suits you, and yes of course trial mode is essential to know how the VF engine works, good luck, and have fun with VF

"rather"? Your definition of "rather" must mean "most", "or too fucking". /versus/images/icons/smile.gif
