I think you're talking about "Outrunners"

In any case this a "true" sequel.

There was Turbo Outrun (or Outrun Turbo?).. you had a (surprise!) turbo button on the gear shifter which you could use as a boost.

*pauses in relish of the memories*

You seem to be painfully unaware of a game called Virtua Cop 3

Sod-it, why can't Sega release some new cutting-edge arcade hardware for their premier arcade releases. I'm tired of walking into arcades and seeing games based on home-console derivative hardware.

I'd was hoping Outrun 2 might appear on the rumoured Naomi 3 board, that will more than likely outperform the current crop of consoles considerably.

I'm a firm believer in the theory that the arcade industry will only recover when decent money is spent creating new high-powered boards. I remember as a kid walking into the local arcade and seeing Space Harrier for the first time - it blew me away with its over-the-top cabinet and visual extravagence. Thinking about it, if Space Harrier was coded using a speced-up Commodore 64 arcade board, I wouldn't have bothered making the trip, no matter how good the gameplay was!

Nowadays, home console technology is so advanced that it really isn't financially wise or viable for both arcade arcade producers (Sega mainly) or arcades (a business long-ailing who greatly benefits from cheaper hardware with easy-to-change games) to spend shitloads of R&D resources making "the next big thing." In fact, the biggest money-maker for arcades in recent years has been the Naomi hardware - and it's still going strong.

But you sound like you're impressed by a pretty cabinet. Go find a deluxe version Virtua Cop 3 - it's enough to make you wet yourself.

That may be so, but the arcade industry has also been in rapid decline over the last few years. I'm not saying most arcade games should use high-end boards, but a few games that really blow the punters away would do allot to get people back in the door I think.

Virtua Cop 3 is the kind of game I'm talking about. I played it when I was down in London and was not impressed. Pretty average graphics and slow gameplay.
