Is there any way to play imports with just a flip top lid casing for ps2?

You need the fliptop AND the swap magic boot disk. Or, just the swap magic disk and instead of buying the fliptop, do the knife trick and swap yourself. The boot disk is neccessary regardless, the fliptop just makes it easier to do the switch.

But while original import games like Evo work with the swap magic disk, others like Soul Calibur 2 don't. They say when swap magic releases their 3.0 version it will (it's up to 2.0 right now), but until then, you can't play certain games like SC2 unless you have a nomod backup copy.

I honestly don't know why certain original import games don't work. Clock Tower 3 doesn't work either.

I heard maybe it's Sony and the way they changed something in the layout of the files on the dvd. I don't know though. I'm like a 2 week noobie on the whole subject. But Evo works and that's awesome in it's own right.

The main issue is that the Magic Swap discs can only handle booting a game up to 4.35 GB's in TOC size. There is also the issue of Double-Protection checks that have rendered V7 PS2's unable to play an additonal 14 titles. The Soul Calibur (JAP) disc has a TOC of 3.9 GB's (DVD5) and does not have the Double Protection Check, but mysteriously still does not boot. There are 11 more titles that mysteriously do not boot as well. SC2 has to be ripped to 74min CD and patched to a NoMod kit in order for it to boot with the Swap Magic disc which is a pain in the ass to say the least. Here is a list of the non-working titles.
