PS2 Laser Replacement

Alright, this happened about a week ago, but it seems my PS2 laser has died. It's been flaky for a couple months on booting, but now it's stopped playing everything except DVD games. The punk won't play cd games or dvd movies now. After talking to the Sony techs it seems they recommend sending it in to have the laser replaced, but I would rather do it myself for the learning experience. Has anyone here had to do this? I wondering if someone can recommend a place to buy a new laser assembly from. I usually buy from Lik-Sang when I need parts, but I'm checking to see if I can get it cheaper than $85 from somewhere closer than HK. Thanks to those who help.

*Note: Since my PS2 died I beat Zelda, got better at Soul Calibur 2 (Also, 100% completed it), and am almost done with Enter the Matrix (Stylish game, but easy).

But why fix it yourself if they'll do it for free, or are they making you pay. You must be a pirate then. They fixed mine and its great now.

This leads me to a question I have. If you have an unmodded Jap PS2, and your in the states. Will they service it here, or do you have send it to Japan?

They said it would be $65 (Price for repair and shipping back) for them to fix it and I would have to pay to ship it to them which is another $25 or so. Thats $90.00 and if I can fix it myself I can save some cash. So far the lowest I have found is about $70 for the replacement lens and have it shipped to me.

About the Japanese PS2 question. They will not officially service them, but you can get information regarding service places that will work on it. Although, when or if it is repaired it will not be covered under the 90 Day Limited Sony warranty.

My DVD reading capability (and presumably DVD game reading capability) died a few months ago. It's a common PS2 problem related to the laser coming out of alignment. I got some instructions on how to realign the laser manually.

    Pluses:

    Free.

    Minuses:

    Voids Warranty
    Might not work
Might end up somehow fucking up everything else and buying a new PS2.

Do you want me to get you the instructions?
I can tell you now I've never tried it, I just have the instructions but lack the nerve.
