Reaction Speed Necessary?

    Hey guys!

I was thinking of trying to drill reactions and just get better at playing "VF" as a lot of people say and I noticed something that was kind of dragging me down. I'm playing Sarah.

One of the guys around me who constantly beats my ass told me that it felt like I wasn't reacting to the information presented on the screen. I told him that I genuinely do try to react to things like being blocked, getting a normal hit, and getting CH but I legit cannot do it consistently no matter how hard I try.

I gave myself a little test where I had the dummy jump and then proceed to do either standing block, crouch block, or a button. The goal was to hit a 6P after they landed and based on the outcome (block, normal hit, or CH) react accordingly (33G fuzzy on block, P on normal hit, 6PK on CH) and even after a good hour of drilling, didn't seem to make a difference. The jump was to make it so you couldn't react to the action they take before the 6P lands so you can only react to the outcome of the contact.

I was curious if the other Sarah players (or anyone in general) was capable of reacting to this stuff consistently? If so - I think it may just be that you need reactions in this game that I'm literally incapable of doing. I was wondering if anyone could take a version of this test and report their results?

Reaction speed is something that grows when you get familiarity with the game. The more you play the more your reaction will be on point. Also vf is a guess based game, which means you have to take a choice before some scenarios completes theirself, if that makes senese; meaning you have to take action not knowing what the opponent is gonna do after a specific block or specific hit ends.
    I Hope this helps.

Understood and that seems to be my experience so far with Sarah's 6P - People kept telling me I should be able to react to block, NH, CH but it just seems that is literally beyond human capability (at least for me). I figured it was more about making better educated guesses based on what is happening in a match as opposed to truly reacting to every little outcome that could possibly occur.

    Thanks for the response!

for sarah's 6P the best thing will be to set the dummy to Guard or Counter hit, If you hit you should be doing the follow up 6PK that is a natural combo if not you just stop. Doing fuzzy after that is tricky and opponents may also be scared by the knee cause it's mid (so you keep em guessing). 6PK is very unsafe on block so be sure to throw it out when you want to surprise the opponent or when the elbow lands

Assuming the total frame of the Sarah's elbow is not altered after it makes contact against opponent, you have approximately 22 frames to confirm hit type. So about 1/3 of a second to input correctly your action without losing your frame advantage. There are quite a few reaction time tests online that gives the speed of your reaction to a stimulus. If you can normally react within 0.333 seconds of the stimulus (usually a mouse click after the screen change colors) your reaction speed is fine. If your reaction speed is fine, it might be an issue of how much information are you trying to process that makes you react slower.

When you were practicing hit confirming guard, normal hit, counter hit it sounds like you are making a decision on three actions at the same time after the elbow makes contact? That likely make it more difficult to react within the 22 frames (1/3 of a second). Not saying it is impossible, but if you still have difficulty, try to simplify the number of choices you make and go from there. For example,

Simplest Hit Confirmation (Single Decision) - React according to just 1 visual stimulus. Have an automatic or default reaction (defensive option) if you do not see the counter hit effect (red in Ultimate). Do you see CH effect? Yes, 6PK then, if not fuzzy guard. In my opinion, this way you are focused on one single visual effect to react to; thus, your execution of moves should be faster. Also, you should change your action on what you do on CH based on what you think your opponent would do when they get counter hit (the educated guess portion that is done before hit confirming).

Harder Hit Confirmation (Three Decisions) - React accordingly to 3 different stimulus (white, yellow, red). What color do you see on contact? If Red I will do option 1, If Yellow I will do option 2, and if White I will do option 3. If this is how you are processing information when trying to hit confirm, that might slow your reaction time as you are making your brain process more information than simply looking specifically for one hit effect.

Hope that makes sense and that it is not full of BS :D

Give it some time. Your reaction will get better as the weeks pass. Don't tire yourself out over something like that.

No one can react to stuff that quickly consistently. Even high level players in Japan don't hit check every single time.

But like others have said, you'll get better at it over time and with practice in the dojo and during matches.
