Rising Attacks Are Your Enemy

Sometime I've come to realize is that using rising attacks is very, very risky and usually not worth what little reward they offer.

Players love to dance around just outside of range to bait your rising attack. Then it whiffs and your opponet gets a free hit on you.

Low rising attacks can be eaten by jumping attacks. Mid rising attacks can sometimes be reversed/dodged. Chances are your opponet will know after what combos or throws of his he can reverse or dodge your mid rising attack, and then he'll do just that.

But perhaps the worst thing you can do is a delayed rising mid kick. Why do I say this? Best case scenario, the delayed kick hits and your opponet for 20 damage and you get an awesome 4-5 frame advantage. Worst case scanariou the kick's blocked, you're at -15, and your opponet gets an elbow counter on you. So why would you delay that rising kick? Most moves that are that high risk give you a much higher reward.

The problem is when I see my opponet standing around me when I'm about to rise I wanna hit him so bad! So then I do a rising attack and he dances out of the way and I get pwnd. Sometimes I have to force my hand away from the kick button and tell myself "NO RISING ATTACK! NO! HIT THE KICK BUTTON NOW AND YOU'LL DIE AND YOU KNOW IT BUT YOU STILL WANNA DO A RISING ATTACK ANYWAY IT WONT WORK!!!" and it doesn't. it never does. :'(

Conversely, if you don't use a rising attack, you are susceptible to the run-up-and-throw game.

Lesson here: Don't get knocked down. :p

You can stand up with tapping G then hold down, and you get up in a crouching state and you can just fuzzy.

Rising attacks are your friend, they are used all the time for good reason.

It prevents your opponent from applying mixups to you while you are down. If they are in range and you don't think they will be able to evade then go for it.

If they keep trying to bait them then just stand up normally. It's basically forcing your opponent into a 3 choice mixup. In a way you have a 2/3 chance of not getting hit after any given knockdown if you know what you're doing.

Compared to tekken 5 and soul calibur 3 the downed opponent is at a lot less danger in VF in general because you have nearly invulnerable wakeup attacks at your disposal.

I really think risingattacks need a buff. Something like +7 (true nitaku) or +6 normalhit and crumble (mid) and knockdown (low) on MC (to prevent the great risk/payoff of crushing them) on the normal variant or something would be fair. Maybe a risingkick (mid) MC could turn the opponent sideways at the very least - they seem so outdated and like an old heritage from earlier gameparts as they are now.

I am actually suspicious that japanese players move in and eat low wakeup kicks on purpose to ensure that they maintain advantage because they eat them so often. If you are up on health I guess that's ok though being hit on purpose is a questionable (but not invalid) tactic.

    Namflow,

Do you have any tips on how to read whether the opponent is delaying the rising kick? It's a big source for damage that I've often overlooked if you can spot that the opponent is doing a delayed one.

offensive move seems like a good way to defeat delayed attacks from whe an opponent is down.

Well, even if you simply block it, elbow counterable opens up big damage and knockdown for a lot of characters.

I used OM to defeat three rising attacks in a row on the weekend, and all three led to a side crumple! But I was so tired (it was after about 12 hours of straight VF) that I can't remember the specifics of the situation so I'll need to go experiment more before I nail it. But basically, yeah, who is gonna rising attack when you risk eating a side crumple?

Remember you can still do thigns the vf4 way also and break rising attacks with a suitable attack, the timing seems easier in 5, for example with shun's mule kick on low rising's.

What's the technique to avoid rising attacks using OM? In VF3 you had to dodge either left or right depending on the lying position of your opponent. And I believe that you had to dodge Akira's rising kicks at the opposite direction.

Basically, is there a difference in doing left/right OM? Thanks.
