Maybe the future is ranking mode based on the user individual progress? Why?
For some people ranking mode based on Zero-sum game is too hard to handle?
In short a game in which a player win is a lose of someone else? I hope it makes sense.

What would be an alternative? I'm not sure, maybe judeg the progress of a player? I don't know how it should work. Something like, it's not important if you win the next match or loose. You can lose a match, but if you do 5/6 successful throw escapes then it OK? And if you didn't buffer a throw escape on -10 (or more) it's a way to down your rank (or make it one of factors).

It's just a loose idea, needs more investigation

Also, the survey might be redundant? The answer is in the game... look how many people is in the ranking mode (competitive part of the game) and how many is in the room matches (competitive & casual part of a game).
