I'd be happy even if it was just an arcade release OUTSIDE Japan. At least there would be some way to play it without having to spend on a plane ticket.

I will say that the graphics need to be improved a bit though. If this is released on console this year, it would have been 3 years since the original VF5 was release. So for many people, FS will be a "new" game, not an update, and the game needs to look the part.

Not sure I agree. I still think it's the best looking fighter right now. New animations, intros and other flourishes (e.g. the splash of sweat during a hit) breath new life into this game we're already familiar with. But for those that will be introduced to the series with FS, I have no doubt the graphics and animation will easily meet current gen expectations.

When i saw this trailer i was shocked at how incredicably beautiful the game looked. And completely impressed that it was the best looking fighting game i've ever seen. So i don't think the graphics need ot be improved, i thought the reactions and the animations were absolutely top notch. What does it have to compete with? the graphics from tekken? ssIV? what else? no other fighting game has looked this good.

On the other hand it's all opinion i suppose.

I think VF has a real problem graphicwise with the moves not seeming to hit still connecting. Probably due to everyone (?) having the same hitbox. I know people from outside the series say this a lot - that it looks like a bunch of air hits. If anything this should be adressed together with people punching in chests instead of faces etc.

1080 progressive has nothing to do with animation quality which goes a long way in giving a game its unique look. ST and 3S are both standard definition and they still look amazing on arcade monitors. Meanwhile Tekken 6BR has 720p graphics with motion blur at the arcade but a significant amount of animation is recycled, outdated, and stiff in my opinion. The fact that Tekken 6BR still has animations from Tekken 1 that are barely adjusted or modified speaks volumes about the emphasis in graphics in the game. Things like electric fists, devil wings fluttering, and other 'loud' animations are what are centered on. Even SFIV runs at 60fps but I believe that the characters are only animated at 30fps.

In VF5R revision B, AM2 went through the trouble of re-animating a pretty significant amount of moves, and 5FS is going to see another round of new animations for old moves. And its VF's animations that make it standout really visually from most other fighting games. Someone posted in the media section the video where a martial artist was performing some of Akira's moves for VF4 Vanilla to be captured and put into the game. It is that insane attention to detail that makes VF what it is.

Even if VF runs at 720p and not 1080p, and if it doesn't have motion blur or overly pronounced hit-flash effects, the incredible attention to animation more than makes up for it. In the case of VF, less is more.

Also didn't AM2 update all of the character models and stages from VF5 to VF5R in the arcade? So it's not like you'll be seeing the same models from VF5 Vanilla (at least you won't if they port the new models).
Stray hitboxes have always been a problem. The one thing that VF needs is a hitbox display feature in replays. If you could turn hitboxes on, and pause replays, and advance them frame by frame it would be quite excellent. AM2 already has frame data in replays so this is the next logical step. And I know that AM2 has the technology because I saw VF4EVO running with the hitboxes turned on. Capcom has debug kits for all of their games where you can turn the hitboxes on as well which is cool as hell. Below is someone hacking the hitboxes for 3S in an emulator.

I wasn't talking about animations... I was talking about updating the detail so that it looks extra sharp on 1080p screens.

Seriously guys... 3 years on and you're all saying that the game should still stay on 720p?

The hardware isn't powerful enough to run at 1080p @ 60fps. It's already pushing the 6800GT/7800GS hard as it is. Nor is the PS3/360 to be honest.

They might be able to add a few effects but 1080p @ 60fps I don't really think so. Lindbergh is very old hardware using directx9. It was never going to last.

Tekken can't even run in 720p and this is on PS3/360 hardware. (I know it runs at 720p without motion blur)

I though that it mentioned on D.K's blog that they wasn't using Lindbergh for FS?

I'm happy with the graphics regardless, until they're using a new engine they can only make minor graphical upgrades.

obviously Panda doesn't know what the hell he is talking about and he seems to be one of those fan boys who think more or higher numbers is always better.... reminds me when I was a kid where you used to sit around and heckle your friends because you had a Sega Saturn and they had a Genesis. You would be like "but mines is better because it's 32 bits son! " of course not having a fucking clue exactly what 32 bits mean or what is the MAJOR difference between the two. I'm no whiz kid but even back in those days all I understood was that one could just process things faster, had more colors, better sound and possibly more RAM. And even adding all that up I still had no fucking clue. I just wanted to play games... good games so that's all matter to me. I really didn't care if it looked better or not. I tell you this Panzer Dragoon Saga was actually a really fucking ugly game to be honest, but god damn that shit was great. Fuck graphics and flashing lights... I play VF for it's game play. Sure I appreciate how it looks, but I'll take the solid game play any day if it was package with VF1 models. And I don't mean the re-polished VF1 models that's been in the VF4 series.

Really if anyone can't tell that even on Standard Definition TV VF5 vanilla still looks better than any other fighting out there to date then they are obviously bias to what other fighting game they like or a fucking blind mice.

moving along... has a HIGH quality vid of this trailer shown up yet? Youtube quality is just not doing this any justice. I haven't read the Youtube comments, but has anyone heckled Sega for a link to a high quality download?

The graphics are great but I think what bothers me is that the developers try to make the characters look 'too' realistic, therefore approaching the 'uncanny valley'.

I liked R's dark tones and shadowy stages that hid the characters a bit more. when in broad daylight the characters look bit 'plastic'-like to me.

ps. I also dont like the thump sound of blocking..

So you aren't aware that the characters looking plastic was intentional so that they could stand out from the background?

I just want the game... I'm not gonna complain about how it looks as long as I can get it. Although those are all valid points.

No and I dont think they need to in order to stand out from the background.

It is a possible explanation, but I think it is more plausible that VF5's skin (lighting) requires more graphical processing in shader operations per pixel.

AM2 probably feel this skin approximation is very good, while freeing up graphics performance for other more important items and processing in the scene.

The reason I put up is what AM2 said on Edge magazine, IIRC.

AM2 actually made the characters look realistic previously, but they blended too much into the background as a consequence.

I think someone from AM2 said the plasticy skin look was intentional as it made things more visible. Whether or not it was just an excuse we don't know but I think that's what BlackDragon is refering to.

I have that Edge article, and its true that they tried to have different types of skin and then decided to go for the "varnished" look. BTW I argued ages ago that SC4 character blend too much into the background, somebody (panda?) said that the sparks and flames help make out the characters more, a different approach completely.

I agree, and with all that fast paced action going on (i.e. Taki super jumping in the air and head diving)it took me a while to be able to see what the hell was going on. The only thing that stands out in SC is the weapons, which leave streaks of light (like light sabers)...

I really liked the dark tones that R has, but FS is very nice in a different way...would be really cool if they had different filters you could choose from as an option (RE5 style)....Sepia VF FTW!! [IMG] *sarcasm*

Btw, I was watching the April Fools VF/SF vids with some SF players from the Greek fighting-game forum, and stuff like "... SF4 should have been on this gfx engine" was mentioned more than once.
