1. Hey Guest, looking for Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown content? Rest assured that the game is identical to Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown so all current resources on here such as Command Lists with frame data, Combo Lists and the Wiki still apply. This link was passed onto me from a friend and turned out to be an interesting read. There's some mention of Virtua Fighter 4, as well as gaming communities (like this one) and the social role they serve in an arcade environment. Not to mention some commentary from some VF player called Eric Chung /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif

While the article is focussed on the U.S., most of it is still applicable to non-asian markets. Anyway, check it out.

This article has lots of interesting points, but the one I agree with the most is this:

    [ QUOTE ]
    Quality of home games
Steve White, editor of trade-focused RePlay Magazine, reasons that the arcade industry "is much diminished in large part because the quality and quantity of home videos have equaled and then surpassed [that of their arcade counterparts]."

The quality issue is a subjective one; few would deny that games like F-Zero AX and Soul Calibur II are well made, but technologically, arcade games are now on an even playing field with their home counterparts. It used to be true that arcade games had more powerful hardware, and that conversions of games to home systems could never achieve "true arcade quality." These days, much of the hardware used in arcade games is based directly on the popular home systems, with minor alterations.

As home games make more and more money (seven billion in 2003, according to The ESA), arcades take the hit in a few ways. It's clear that developers that make games for both consoles and arcades are allotting more resources to where the money is. This, unfortunately, leaves fewer people to work on new arcade titles.

Amusement consultant Kevin Williams claims, "For the factories such as Sega and Namco, investment in console profits has dominated their thinking…Namco has [mostly] abandoned AM development as they see profit from raiding their amusement library for console adaptation."

Also, because of the demand to release arcade games quickly on home systems (so that the home versions sell better), there are fewer games exclusively in arcades. Titles like Crazy Taxi 3 and Ridge Racer V even came out for home systems before they hit arcades. Factor in the extra features that the console games offer for longevity and it's near impossible for the arcade versions to compete.

I miss the old SF2 days back in the early 90's. Arcades were always full of competition for that game. I wish the U.S. VF scene was like that. Well, there's always VF5.

There is alot of truth in console/PC gaming replacing arcades. Video gaming for me was on the Mega Drive playing Sonic, the arcades weren't as big a thing. Seems that once consoles started to become mainstream arcades were forgotten. I can think of a handfull of titles that I am waiting for on the PS2, but as far as arcade titles go I can maybe think of two at most, and they will probably get converted to a console game anyway. /versus/images/graemlins/frown.gif

    Interesting article.

I thought it was odd that VF gets a plug on several pages yet when they write about online communities (and provide links) we weren't present.

Eric Chung is a casual gamer who sometimes play VF on the side, when he's not playing other games from his gigantic game library. I heard he likes to mash with sarah.
