What is everyone's opinion on the xbox fighter Tao Feng, seems intriguing to me, but no vf killer, or even doa killer for that matter. though i have to say the body injuring part seems pretty cool,

    whatta ya think???

Granted I have only seen what has been published on various gaming sites in text and movies, but it seems like something that will be fun for a few minutes. It honestly reminds me of Killer Instinct. I'll play it, but I have no expectations other than it being bad.

I agree, most likely all the hype is totally bull, that this title is no more than a simple rent. But i have to say i think the ability to injure certain parts of the body, and take them out of the round sounds pretty cool, though real hard to actually make work, will see.

also, looks like its trying to be more Mortal Kombat than Mortal Kombat, need a new gimmick tobias

So has anyone played this yet?

And yeah, it kinda IS more MK than MK.

And from what I've seen (very limited though), none of the characters seem very memorable and the stages seem kinda bland and boring. I have yet to see the finished version on a TV so I could be totally wrong for all I know.

Yeah, so anyone? Is it merely a rental as we all suspect?

TF doesn't come out for another week, so I would guess nobody will get a chance to play it until this weekend at the earliest. The new X-Box magazine demo disc has a new movie of it included on it. Seems like a rental at best from the footage shown.

Personally it seems like it is trying too hard. I mean they have every kind of character imaginable. They had a pretty interesting feature on it on Extended Play.

Still it looks like a fighting game for hosers.

The so-called 'progressive damage' feature in this game reminds me of the old 'Art of Fighting' game from NeoGeo(SNK).

But according to Gamespy (or is it IGN?), the model polygon count in Tao Feng is insane.

There is no doubt that the character models in DOA3 are very beautifully, very smoothly crafted; they all have near CG quality and each model has around 3,000 polygons. Accordingly, the individual model in Tao Feng is made up of between 10,000-15,000 polygons /versus/images/graemlins/shocked.gif. Xbox is indeed evil.

Of course, this game is definitely no VF or DOA. Love it hate it, that's very much up to individual's likes or dislikes.

Just imagine a graphically soup up DOA3 with a lineup of occult-looking fighters, throw in the progressive damage thing plus interactive and destructible environments, there is your Tao Feng.

    My 2 cents.

Hrmm, is this based on playing the game?

The concept is pretty cool, like limb damage and showing body damage. I think it resembles MK way too much. It's a John Tobias project btw, so go figure. If I had seen this without knowing what it was, I would swear it was another MK and will probably get as much attention as MK DA.

I just read the GameSpot Review and it seems that pertty much everything we suspected was right.

As far the 10,000 polys per character, I dunno where they all went, but the ones in the screen shots dont look very good.
MK:DA looks waay better than TF actually, so does DOA3.

NOt to mention the character designs are very cliched and bland. None of them seem very memorable and endearing. Like in Tekken, VF and MK, the characters are all instantly recognizable and memorable - each with a distinctive look and personality.
Maybe it won't seem so bad once I actually play the game, huh?

    Hmm..

According to these reviews, tao feng only managed to score a mediocre 65/100. Oh well...

Habitually, I refer to IGN and Gamespy for game reviews and IMO, Gamespy is usually more discreet. But I think what's more important is, both usually offer deserving and unbiased critique (unlike a certain monthly-issue games magazine I used to subscribe).

And in rare cases where they have vast differences in their scores (WHAT? 87? WHAT? 38? WHAT?)..well like I said, it's very much of that love it or hate it kind of thingy.

    I say 'to-mae-to'
    U say 'to-ma-to'
    They say 'who cares?'

    Cheers!

Well, I tend to view IGN reviews as usually "not-so-informed" but they often represent what most casual gamers would think of a game. Therefore, it works for the majority of people out there.

However, the situation of not being so informed, or even sometimes misinformed, shouldn't be too surprising. As long as they're not going the path of the MSNBC (I think) review of Virtua Fighter 3tb dreamcast (they called it a Tekken clone among other interesting comments).

I definitely wouldn't say they were unbiased. On that note, the idea of a review being unbiased is... interesting.

That IGN review was really pitiful though... they guy sounds like he never played a fighting game in his life. He mentioned that the best things (most innovative) about the game are: 1) the lack of rounds (ala Killer Instinct) and 2) pole-swingin'! Other notable features of the game are (paraphrase) "more spoken dialogue than any other fighter." He complains that, if you get hit by the first hit of a combo, there is no way to block or escape the rest of the hits. My take on that was, "That's the whole point of a combo." His other (minor!) complaint was that, if you pick certain characters on certain backgrounds, the frame rate gets cut almost in half. But it doesn't affect the gameplay, I mean, fighting games don't rely on precise timing or anything. /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I downloaded some insider clips, and the animation is just pathetic. Prefight animations are amazingly lifelike, but in the game, the characters look like stop motion animated puppets (if you've seen Evil Dead 2, the "dancing girlfriend" scene looks a lot like pretty much any of the female characters fighting.)

I was kind of looking forward to this one, but it looks like it's no good. /versus/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Well...I think he was complaining to which how excessive the combos get...if you have a game with huge combos, need to have combo breakers....

On the contrary, games shouldn't really need combo breakers. If your combos are too long and powerful, tweak the system a little; a combo breaker is almost as annoying as MvC2's arbitrary 50-hit cap or 2097's arbitrary one-hit-per-move cap.
