English isn't my first language, so i don't really know the proper terminology. Does the term "teching" refer to a fall recovery (ukemi) only, or to a side roll (while on the ground) as well?

thanks guys. This is an awesome forum.

I know that techrolling is /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/u.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif / /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif, but is "evading" a synonym? Or when people talk about evading are they just talking about Offensive/Defensive moves? And when you do /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/u.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif, or /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif while on the ground, what is that called?

Also...is mapping common button combinations to the shoulder buttons considered n00bish? Or is that common? I have
/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif ingrained into my brain as R2 and I don't see it changing anytime soon...

"Evading" means defensive move (in previous VFs defensive move was called "evade"... they changed it in VF5 when they created the offensive move).

Collectively, I'd use the term quickrise. Or individually, you can say sideroll, backroll, etc...

As for mapping button combinations... if you're stuck using a pad, mapping shoulder buttons is probably the easiest way to play, there isn't much way around it. Having said that, however... the game really is designed to be played on a stick, and execution is much easier on a stick. If you have any intention of getting more serious, and possibly switching over in the future, it is worthwhile to try and at least mentally get yourself used to the idea of only 3 buttons, and think of the shoulder buttons as shortcuts, not individual inputs themselves.

To avoid confusion, save the term quickrise for /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif (without an up or down direction). What Omega_Red is asking about is really just standing up normally but rolling in a direction beforehand. Calling it rolling might be fine. I haven't heard anyone say rolling without also giving the direction. Just remember not to confuse it with techrolling (/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif with an up or down direction).

Yeah, that might work. I usually use "tech-" for the actual P+K+G getup, and "quick-" for fastest possible rising speed after moves where teching isn't possible.
