Time to move on from Jacky

I have been playing Jacky since VF3 and for just playing against my friends Jacky could easily take any of them. But after going to Evo East for the first time and watching some real high level VF matches I think its time to move on. I tend to think of myself as more of an defensive player and I love to get in close and punish people with throws. I think Jeffrey would be a little slow for my taste so i was leaning towards Wolf, Goh or Brad. What do you all think would these be good characters to move to, do you have nay other suggestions or should I just continue to improve my Jacky skills?

I think you could still use your strategy as a player and still use jacky. The best thing for you to probably do is get more people to play with. Particularly, try to find people who are better than you so you can learn from them.

If you want a combination that's got some good throw/grapple/in close stuff, while still having a fast strike game, try Vanessa. Her Offensive Stance should satisfy the fast strike need (though she's pretty linear in that stance), while Defensive has all the defense/grapple/circular stuff that you'd like to experiment with.

Or stick with Jacky, he's solid. He's popular for a reason, too.

I agree I just met Flash this weekend at Evo and I plan to get together with him and some other guys to practice up on my VF skills. Plus i am going to start traveling to some of these out of state tournaments so i can get more VF experience under my belt. I have been a hardcore VF player for years but since my friends have given up on it its just been my vs the AI. After seeing the competition at Evo east i gong to really push up on my game and come hard at Evo world.

Tips when fighting Flash. ALWAYS struggle hard. If you don't, you'll be caught in a 100+ combo before you know it:p

I took flash down to round 5 a couple of times but I just couldn't get that last hit out to take the match. He is probably one of the best wolf players I have seen.

Don't switch. Jacky will always be a hard character to play at a high level because of his popularity. What you're going through is an indication of comfort your peers have with Jacky (and more-so your style of playing him)

It's time to step up and took a look at where you're becoming complacent in your game. Luckily with the increase in popularity of a lot of characters there should be better this time around for people lacking character experience. Kage for instance is being played immensely so far over here in the west.

    Stick with the j-man /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

    ^What he said.

Just look back and see what you did wrong. Where you repeating a pattern that your opponents were taking advantage of. Did you fail to punish your opponents mistake or force choices when at the advantage. Did you fail to defend against certain tactics and tricks. Don't blame the character, look back at your own short comings and use it to power up your overall game.

Jacky is solid, you just need to work on your VF skills in general.

One thing I notice that everyone is good at is the juggles. I can get my opponent in the air rather easily but sometimes my timing with the combos once they are in the air is a little off.

    combos vary per weight class...

    1. Until you can tell what to do in the air - do: /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif. This is a beginner combo that will hit anyone on a normal float and because of the spin adds extra difficulty for someone who can't tech roll well. This way you're not wasting the float thinking about what to do.

    2. Go into training mode and practice recognizing stance. Practice normal hit and major counter combos. Try them in your matches and you'll soon get used to pulling them off in battle as if second nature.

Recognizing stances takes time, so if you find yourself having trouble, try to find combos that work in both stances. They might end up being weaker than the stance specific combos, but it's an upgrade from PPK. And like Flash said, weight classes... that should be easy enough to remember.

It's ok to play two characters as if they were your primary ones. Or maybe play one primary, and another sub. Eventually you'll realize whether you prefer another character over Jacky, but you can only do so by playing them regularly and with depth.

i cant stress this point enough. well said ice-9.

in vf4evo, akira used to be my main, while wolf and jeffrey were my sub characters. but when i saw that akira became player-friendly in vf5, i then decided to make wolf my main after realizing his true potential. you HAVE to know the nooks and crannies of your main character to be successful...

    peace,

    THE CHIEF~!!

Well I am planning on attend the Richmond VA championship next weekend so I am definitely going to put in some more practice time with Jacky and work on my juggle combos.
