    Some of you may be aware that the site formerly known as Fighters.Net have now changed name to VersusCity.net.

    What do you guys think of Fighters.Net's new name? /versus/images/icons/wink.gif

    ...it's equal in quality of the name to this site's forum...

    Anything that sounds remotely related to Sega or Virtua Fighter is good stuff. /versus/images/icons/smile.gif

    The admin for the place has VF4 in his profile. If so, was the name change a direct rip off??

    I mean, we're flattered, but....sheesh.

    If the name change is a direct ripoff of Sega, it should be an almost entirely VF or at least Sega-related site... i.e. like this site or vfevo.com ..

    If it's about fighting games in general it does seem kind of like he's copping someone else's catchy phrase without cause. Maybe he bought it as speculative thing, like whoever owns Shenmue.net.

    I guess if sega ever had their lawyers on him, he could plead ignorance. Versus city cabinets in america are rarer than spam-flavored pez.

    PS: we love you reno.

    Ha, fair's fair, but these are two separate issues.

    One is a newly created fighting game site with the same name as an established forum. (If you are VF fan and a member of the online community, when you see "Versus City" in the context of the Internet, do you think "virtuafighter.com forum" or do you think "arcade cabinet?" Thank you.)

    The other is about creating a fan site for a game I enjoyed. Kinda like virtuafighter.com. Why do you always try to be so clever and make things personal hmm?

    Actually... whenever I see "versus city", I always think "arcade cabinet". I think of the forum here simply as "VFDC forum". Still, naming a website "VersusCity.net" should mean it's more or less VF-related... is there even anything on VF there? /versus/images/icons/smile.gif

    Apologies if it seemed personal, I swear it was not. I was suggesting one theory for the purchase (out of three):

    1. it's called versuscity.net because he heard the term Versus City somewhere (*coff*) and thinks it sounds cool and memorable (that would be imo a Bad Reason, essentially ripping off someone else's good idea as his own)

    2. The site is eventually intended for VF-related or at least Sega material (that would be imo a Good Reason, for the same reason virtuafighter.com is a fine name for a site devoted to VF, but not for a site devoted to tekken).

    3. He wanted to sell the domain name later if Sega were interested. I'd always assumed that's why shenmue.net was bought, and I don't mean to infer that anyone's a running dog capitalist pig for snatching up a valuable domain. If I had the time and inclination, I'd buy www.tekken5.com right now. (This would be neither a Good nor Bad reason, it's just business)

    Hope that was more clear.

    Yup.

    So, anyone out there want to buy shenmue.net?

    Explanation for why I bought up www.versuscity.net:

    [12:01] <Reno-> god
    [12:01] <CreeeD> some sort of camelhumper.
    [12:01] <Reno-> your theories all suck
    [12:01] <Reno-> I bought VC.net because I wanted a personal domain for myself
    [12:01] <CreeeD> [ Reno- ] laff
    [12:02] <Reno-> and I was playing on a VC cabinet at the time
    [12:02] <Reno-> so i thought
    [12:02] <Reno-> hey
    [12:02] <Reno-> Versus City sounds pretty slick
    [12:02] <Reno-> lemme go buy that
    [12:02] <CreeeD> sort of like naming your first child "caprice classic"
    [12:02] <Reno-> I didn't exactly put a lot of thought into it =P

    Reno is a good guy, and who cares where he got the name from. It's not ICE's name, he got it from Sega. When I hear Versus CIty I do think of the cabinets first and this board second. Beyond that, the name makes perfect sense for *any* competitive game. If anyone has a right to get upset I think it's SEGA -- but wait, SEGA would probably send thier lawyers after this place first.

    I happen to agree. Versus City is, imo, an arcade cabinet for fighting games (usually). When I think of VC - I think of the cabinet not the forum on VFDC. I think it's a great name for the new fighters.net, really. Highly appropriate.

    For the record, Versus City is *not* the name of any forum on this site. It used to be - ages ago - but now it's nothing more than a *section* of VFDC.

    The only entity who should be flattered (as if it's really necessary) is Sega. :p

    cheers,

    I got VF4 in my profile cause it's my favourite fighting game at the moment. Has nothing to do with the fact the site is named 'Versus City'. Hell, come two weeks I'll probably have it changed to Guilty Gear XX. /versus/images/icons/tongue.gif

    So yea, I doubt that this board had any bearing on naming our site, nor were there any ill intentions. As Reno put it, he was playing on the cabinet at the time and got the idea to buy the domain. In all likeliness, if some* people would pay attention once in a while the site would still be fighters.net...

    (* = not referring to anybody on here, but the owner of the domain fighters.net)

    No offense Llan -- the name of VFDC's forum IS "Versus City." I'm not sure why you think your take on this takes precedence over mine. Just a little presumptuous don't you think?

    Just look at the main menu bar. Thanks.

    For the record, I'm not really "upset" over fighters.net's new name. I'm removed from gaming and online communites for gaming enough to not really care. If anything, the reaction I get more is one of amusement.

    There are so many cool names one can use--why pick that something that already exists for an already established forum? For example, I was *this* close to changing Versus City's name into Net City, War City, War Room, etc. a couple years back when VFDC went through its restructuring.

    If Reno didn't know about this place being called Versus City...(even though its on the main navigation bar)...that's cool. It is a very cool name and great minds think alike (but I thought of it first, nyah nyah).

    But if he did know about Versus City then I think it's a big waste of an opportunity to think up a new, totally distinctive name and avoid confusion.

    Maybe it's just me but I see "Versus City" on the menu bar. Ok. I click it. Now I've moved from the home page (or wherever) and I see a whole bunch of links. I see a category called "Help Center" containing three separate forums: Character and Technique Training, Console, and Kumite.

    I see another section. It's entitled "Versus City" and contains five separate forums: Junky's Jungle, Jamboree, Media, General, and International.

    Funny, I don't a forum named Versus City anywhere - oh I know, maybe it's commented in the code. Jeff, please, explain again how the forum at VFDC is named Versus City? /versus/images/icons/smile.gif

    cheers,

    LOL, this is familiar--someone trying to argue with me over semantics. Some things never change.

    Anyway, back when forum code was simplistic, you could only have one "forum" per code. Then with the advent of UBB and the like, one was able to create "sub-forums" within a forum.

    Still, that doesn't change the fact that these sub-forums share one database, one common code, one common license even, which is what most administrators would consider "the forum."

    In our case, "the forum" IS "Versus City." It was Versus City when only one forum was possible, it is still Versus City now that one can create sub-forums. I have NO IDEA why anyone would want to argue with me on this (and post twice to respond no less).

    So ha, my definition is better than yours. I win. /versus/images/icons/laugh.gif

    bleah.

    I'm in a pissy mood! I just think that it doesn't matter where Ice got the idea for the forum name and it doesn't matter where Reno got the idea for the domain name; Neither enjoy copyright/trademark on it.

    All that matters is who registered the domain name first. That's Reno. When Shroud grabbed Virtuafighter.ca there was no public outcry or questions of "wonder where the original idea for that came from" just as there was no similar cry out for Jeff grabbing this domain "from" Sega.

    Nothing exists in a vacuum. Get used to it people.
