    ok,
before i get flamed to death...
i'm an old timer from vf1/vf2..skipped 3/4/evo etc..
    and am now playing vf5...

yes, there's a huge amount of changes in gameplay,
most strategies, the new characters etc..

but based on my observation over the last
few weeks of VF5 (on the xbox 360)...
    i noticed a few things..

    1) i can actually use a lot of the vf2 moves,
strategies etc, and they seem to work decently
against ai characters, and some human players
(not against better players, and newer non-vf2
    characters though)

    2) yeah there's a ton of new moves to deal with,
but i haven't worked them into my gameplay or
    strategies..

now about my title....what i meant of course,
is that does virtua fighter = fighting vipers,

i don't know if anyone played the arcade/home
versions of fighting vipers 1/2 (dreamcast/arcade),
but i played the heck out those also..

    i've noticed there's a lot of similarities
in styles, moves, characters, (ok, not the outfits,
but still, there's some pretty crazy looking ones
in vf5).... i do admit that the fighting viper
characters copied a ton from virtua fighters
(honey = sarah, picky = lion, bahn = akiran, etc, etc)..

but the pendulum has now swung back to
fighting vipers (stylewise)...why is this you say?

    - fricken long easy combos, yeah sure you could pull off
some sweet moves in vf1, and vf2 if you were hardcore,
(and played the game religously)...but now, even without
that much effort, i can land, and see other people effortlessly
pull of super long strings of moves (especially with some of the newer characters , ahem BRAD, GOH, etc)...[granted, experience
does help, and i do realize this has probably been going on
    since vf3]..

    - trampoline ground, or reduced gravity..
much like fighting vipers, the ground which appeared
to be solid, has now turned into a bouncy trampoline,
on which even the heaviest objects seem to go up and
down with the slightest slap, smash, or overhead hit..
in the past, once you hit the ground you stayed down,
not so here, as i have seen pai, sarah, eileen, etc
knock someone over, and then get 4 or more hits on
them while still on the ground (and they are not
simple stomps, or punchs, or kicks either, which is
    ok)..

fighting vipers was full of this style, and it worked
there, since the fighting was way over the top anyways,
here it seems like the lower gravity, allows for flashier
    looking gameplay...

    3) the look of the characters, while i'm not suggesting
a return to low-rez, blocky polygony characters (which
actually looked kind of cool in the special mode in vf4 evo)..
the characters in vf2 have a classic , classy looking mode
    - the vf3 changes were ok....but now half the time, i can't
even tell what character i'm fighting if it wasn't for the
name announced at the beginning , etc...

ok, yes, its fun to play dress with the characters for some
people, and it may give the illusion that there are more
characters than they really are, but look at the ridiculous
amounts of wasted polygons used to render those, i'm sure
they could have enhanced other gameplay areas, and took
    some of those options away..

    final note:
    -----------
don't get me wrong, vf5 is great for what it is,
but i don't get the feeling playing it that it
has made all the changes for the better..[and no,
i am not comparing it to the tekken series, or
dead ar alive for that matter]...

caveat: i do have vf3 for the dreamcast, vf4/evo
for the ps2 also, but i have barely played either
one of them..so i can't really comment on whether
the gameplay changes are really just the natural
evolution from vf2, i know vf3 through me completely
off with the evades, the non-level playing fields,
and all kinds of other stuff though...

ha ha, yeah, seriously, when you've only known
that sarah has long blond hair for the last 15 years,
and then you see, orange , red, black, green, blue hair etc..
and then its short/ponytailed/bangs, etc..i swear i was fighting
some other character from a different game (tekken/fighting vipers/dead or alive)..

but yeah its still cool to customize your character.

hello negative1! I'm a fellow vet of the saturn days! I had Fighting Vipers and played it alot. But I always went back to
    VF2,in fact I didn't stop playing VF2 until I got VF3 for my
Dreamcast. There needs to be a compilation of all the previous VF
games on one disk. Did anyone besides me play/enjoy Last Bronx?

    hey there,
yes, a fighting compilation would be awesome,
i played 'last bronx' also on saturn/pc, but
it was very hard, i never got the hang of it,
but it was fun to play....

I had last Bronx along with Fighters MegaMix. In Last Bronx I used that big guy with the wooden hammer. I thought move cancells in that game were sick. Yeah, Im 41 years old been around gaming seems like forever. Annnd Im not going anywhere either. Around here we played the VF series casually until VF4 when we saw the replays on the disk. When Kyasao raped Chibita on that one replay, I knew right then that I wanted to play like that. Myke and Ice9 were pretty good too.
