VF the Gentlemen's Game?

I was reading an article on Kotaku.com where a guy says that the behavior of online gamers is holding back the advancement of video games. In a nutshell he said most new gamers don't like games enough to put up with the comments made by people online. Something Gabe from penny-arcade referred to as the "Greater Internet Dickwad Theory." While reading the article I realized that playing VF5 online is indeed different from most games. Most people either don't talk or are at least respectful during or after matches.

I have played every fighting game that has landed online for consoles so trust me when I say it's quite refeshing. I'm pretty sure once Tekken 6 and Soul Calibur hit online the attitudes won't be the same. As far as DOA is concerened it's the fighting game the Halo generation likes to play so you know what type of crap you're gonna hear in the rooms.

I cut my teeth in arcades so I know for a fact the only reason people say the tings they do online is because they know there's no chance of a bonnafide ass-whooping coming their way regardless of what they say. So is it just me? Do you guys see VF5 online as more polite and tolerant in general than other fighting games? Just wondering.

VR'ers are pretty polite and tolerant in general. Every time I host events, all attendees are just top-notch individuals.

I've always known that VF has a unique crowd and I think other VF players know this too. It's part of what makes some people stay and others leave. The players who prefer drama tend to find this gaming community boring.

It's not fair to categorize or generalize any group (but most of us have done it at some point) specially when there are always exceptions to the rules.
There ARE assholes in VF, just not as many as there are in a game like Halo or most other shoot-em-ups but for the most part it's safe to say that the VF crowd are, overall, one of the more "self-aware" fighters out there.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I thought that most, if not all, of the DOA crowd were nothing but immature, trash-talking, self-delusional goobers.
But then I went to Plague's and I met a few DOA players, these guys were young but they weren't anywhere near as bad as I had imagined. They were pretty cool (at least to me).
It helped to change my perspective, I use to have an askew view of DOA players just from the ones that I had met so far and also from those God-awful youtube videos with all of that retarded shit-talking /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/sick.gif

It is true that there are many rude and impolite players on T5: DRO, but players like that can really be found in any online community...

    I don't have 360, so I haven't experienced VF 5 online yet
*Crossing my fingers for PS3 online VF 5: R*, but all the people that I know who like VF(none play it these days though...) are very different from most of those who I know that play Tekken...

The VF people(and even the ones on these boards) tend to be more mature and just more "chill" than other gaming comunities...

I think this is another reason why I like VF more...

In VF, jerks like Shag are the outliers. In DOA the nice guys are the outliers.

Indeed the community is one of the best things about the Virtua Fighter series.

To put in more accurately, in the DOA community, there is a core group of elitist players, who while not outright assholes, have huge egos which must be maintained. Then there are the hangers on, who play with and hang around the elitist players only to bask in their reflected glory. Then there are the talentless assholes who, because they have no talent, have nothing better to do than to make playing DOA misserable for everyone else. And finally, there are the nice players who try to participate and contribute to the community. These players have largely been corrupted and alienated by the DOA community to the point where there are on the fringe. Most of my freinds in the game were in nice player category. Unfourtunately, as soon as someone develops an ego, or becomes drawn in by greed, as many players were due to the cash making opportunities that became preventant in the DOA community over the past year, they usually lose interest in playing the game for fun, and degrade into one of the other categories.

Playing VF5 has been the most fun I've had playing a fighting game since DOAU. The maturity level is refreshing, and I never once felt bad about losing a game. I've tried to convince some of my fellow DOA players how much better things are here. Maybe someday they'll see the light.

VF not being that popular really helps us have a good community I think(sounds messed up I know but just think about it). We get people here who play the game for the love of the game, not for alterer motives. We also want to grow and become larger so being mean spirited to each other really wouldn't help us foster that goal.

Appreciate the responses. I have always said that the only thing being good at video games says about you is that you're good at video games. Some people seem to think it makes them a superstar or something. It's just good to know that my favorite fighting game has retained some semblance of maturity once it made the leap to online play. Takes me back to my high school and college days playing games with the crew.

It works like the real martial arts schools. You have some schools
and their students who talk a lot of trash usually don't have skill to back it up and also they really don't understand what martial arts are all about.

On the other hand you have schools who students understand dojo etiquette:

    1) Be prompt
    2) Always bow when entering or leaving the dojo
    3) Noobs are expected to look to seniors for guidance, and treat
    them with respect
    4) Behave appropriately in the dojo (place of the way)
    5) Teach when asked
    6) Never throw or drop you obi on the gound
    7) Never lose your temper when sparring
    8) Pay attention: it is part of training
    9) practice, practice, practice kihon waza and kata outside of class

Most Vfers have good dojo etiquette. The ones that don't usually don't last long and move on to another school. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

This was, in fact, what soured me to playing DOA, and I played a lot of it and put up with a lot of assholes before moving on. A little shittalk is okay, i think, and adds to the drama of the match, but there's a fine line between friendly-ish shittalk in the spirit of competition and being a nimrod.

I've posed this before but I really believe that the biggest obstacle to DOA reaching its full potential is its fans. A DOA player without an ego or an attitude may not actually exist. Extinct, like the dodo, or imaginary like the unicorn. Alright, I've overstated the case, but seriously, I don't even like the game that much anymore - and for that reason.

I'm not kidding: if Team Ninja never made another DOA, I wouldn't be that broken up about it.

And I haven't even tried Tekken online because I'm pretty sure I know what I'm going to get, and while I don't love Tekken, I'm not ready to hate it yet.

hmmm interesting topic. And very very true. I have seen that Vf'rs are very polite online. U want to see REAL assholes??? Visit Puerto Rico. The guys that never win against US players but have a BIG EGO just because they win with glitchy stuff. Of course they ONLY play gamnes in wich you can win by using cheap glitchy unbalanced tactics. They can't play others because their egos are too fragile. So if you actually beat them at their own crap they get really angry. Its fun to watch tough. However, they run from VF at first sight because they know how it is. No instant gratification. Yeah its easy to have a big ego when you play Tekken or DOA and abuse the unbalanced issues. Ulike VF were you have to earn your wins and reputation. I went to a 3rd Strike tournament in wich they were yelling insults at everybody who wasnt from the South of the country... Go figure. Gamers here dont play VF because its unattractive to them. Not only because of the overall difficulty. But because they can't relate to the overall attitude surrounding the community. So if any of you visit here and play Guilty Gear, 3rd Strike or Tekken, and you dont like the attitude. Remember, this IS the Island of Dr.Moron.
